Fresh off the selection of “La Mesías” as the only European series at this year’s Sundance Festival, “Veneno” creators Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo – Los Javis – are set to produce Netflix original series “Superestar,” created by Spain’s Nacho Vigalondo, writer-director of 2016’s Anna Hathaway headed “Colossal,” Neon’s first pick-up for the U.S.
The six-episode series is directed by Vigalondo and Claudia Costafreda, co-creator of “Cardo,” an uninhibited portrait of Spain’s young generation eager for a quick fix of sex or drugs for want of a larger sense of direction in life, which was chosen by Variety, as “Veneno,” as one of the best international TV shows of the year.
Set up at Los Javis’ Suma Content, their indie Madrid-based label, “Superestar” is written by Vigalondo, María Bastarós, Paco Bezerra and Costafreda.
Oscar-nominated for his short, “7:35 in the Morning,” Vigalondo is best known for sci-fi comedies and thrillers such as,...

He’s gone up against a collector of human body parts, a creepy next-door neighbor, and the Dark Knight himself, but in his upcoming film Back Fork, Josh Stewart is taking on a real-life epidemic: prescription opioids.
Stewart recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Back Fork, which will focus on the devastating effects of opioids on communities and families. It’s a project that Stewart wrote, and it’s one that he’ll produce, direct, and star in as well.
With the Kickstarter campaign now underway, Daily Dead had the chance to catch up with Stewart for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the importance of his latest project, what he learned from directing The Hunted that he’ll apply to Back Fork, the upcoming Insidious: Chapter 4, and his desire to do another Collector movie.

It’s safe to say I’m a fan of the films of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. Between them, the duo have written and/or directed some fun fear flicks: Feast and it’s sequels (which I truly adore), Saw 4 – 7 and the fantastic pairing of The Collector and The Collection. It’s been four years since the latter film, their last feature, and now they’re back with The Neighbour – which also marks the Third time the filmmakers have worked with actor Josh Stewart.
Set in Cutter, Mississippi, The Neighbour follows two small-time drug-traffickers, John (Stewart) and Rosie (Essoe), who operate a weigh station next door to their creepy, hunting-obsessed neighbour, Troy. Planning to leave their drug-dealing life behind,...

In my seven years of doing this, I can count on one hand the number of times I've inadvertently deleted or otherwise lost audio from an interview -- literally one of the worst things that can happen to a journalist. Unfortunately, I was forced to tick off one of those fingers just last week, when I settled in to transcribe my chat with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton -- the longtime creative partners who collaborated on a total of four entries in the Saw franchise and two films in their Collector series -- and discovered that our nearly 30-minute chat had been wiped out entirely. Luckily, Dunstan was kind and understanding enough to respond to a set of emailed questions in the aftermath, and while I lament that our much more extensive previous conversation will never see the light of day -- among other things, you better believe I dug...

Bill Engvall in The Neighbour
Marcus Dunstan's The Neighbour, which screened at Frightfest and opens in the UK this weekend, is a dark horror tale which will make you question how much you know about the people next door. What will shock some viewers more than the horrors in the basement is the fact that it stars popular Us comedian Bill Engvall, better known for films like Delta Farce and Catching Faith. Let's just say that his performance here is a little bit different.
Bill was keen to talk about the film but, somewhere in the chain of people making the arrangements, there was confusion about time zone conversion. We ended up speaking just after 7am. Knowing that many actors are night owls, I apologised, but he laughed. "Honey, when you get to my age, this is sleeping in." He told me that he's really excited about this film because the role is.

Creative partners Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton -- who co-wrote a total of four Saw sequels -- are back once again with The Neighbor, a new thriller that marks Dunstan's third directorial effort after 2009's The Collector and its 2012 sequel The Collection. Set in Mississippi, the film stars Josh Stewart (Criminal Minds) and Alex Essoe (so memorable as the fame-hungry actress in Starry Eyes) as a couple who uncover the horrifying truth about their next door neighbor (stand-up comedian-turned-actor Bill Engvall of Blue Collar Comedy fame). You can watch an ultra-tense scene from the film in the HitFix-exclusive clip above. The Neighbor is out this week on DVD, Digital HD and VOD.

For over a decade now, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton have collaborated on bringing crimson-stained nightmares to the big screen, and while horror fans may associate the creative duo with gore galore due to their inventive Saw sequels (parts IV–VI) and creepy Collector films, their latest project, The Neighbor, opts for atmospheric tension over buckets of blood.
With The Neighbor coming out on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and VOD from Anchor Bay Entertainment on September 6th, I had the opportunity to talk with Dunstan about directing his third film, casting Bill Engvall as a charming villain, re-teaming with actor Josh Stewart, and the possibility of a third Collector movie.

Tagline: "Fear thy Neighbor." Director Marcus Dunstan (The Collector) and actor Josh Stewart re-team for The Neighbor. An official synopsis is fairly revealing (spoilers ahead). In Cutter, Mississippi, John is searching for his girlfriend Rosie. He finds her at his neighbor's home, along with several other people. Now, John must lead everyone one of this torturous dungeon. It is strange to see a film reveal so much, so early.
