“I’m not particularly interested in looking at stories that are very black-and-white,” says Skye Borgman. The award-winning director has earned a reputation for exploring the nuances of harrowing true crimes that are anything but straightforward. “I like to be able to look at stories with various different layers and not necessarily give answers to things, but rather present a nuanced and a flawed perspective,” she says.

Skye Borgman’s deep dive into an unsolved serial killer’s crimes unearths a whole family tree of pain, pathos, and progress.
“A cold case is no substitute for a warm life.”
True crime documentaries and serial killer investigations have become the latest cash cow for streaming services. Dozens of these slickly-packaged products flood streamers as they elicit shock and awe through sensationalized storytelling. That’s not to say that all of these serial killer docu-series are disposable, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to engage in these investigative narratives. The Truth About Jim benefits from its accomplished director, Skye Borgman, who’s responsible for the gripping true crime documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight, which unpacks the complicated tale of the Broberg family, as well as Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries revival. The Truth About Jim tells a story that’s comfortably in Borgman’s wheelhouse that attempts...

In the Netflix documentary film Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case, the horrifying disappearance of a 21-year-old British girl, Lucie Blackman, unfolds. Lucie relocated to Japan and started working as a hostess at a restaurant in Tokyo, but after merely three months, she mysteriously disappeared. Through an extensive investigation into the disappearance of Lucie Blackman, the shocking revelation of a stone-cold murderer and sexual predator lurking in the streets of Japan surfaced.
In this documentary, the account of the events surrounding Lucie Blackman’s disappearance is discussed and revisited, featuring a grieving father, Tim Blackman, who did everything in his power to bring his daughter back but found himself entangled in a feud with the Tokyo police. This nearly 23-year-old murder case was once major news, but only a few people outside these countries —the UK and Japan—are aware of it. However, this is where Netflix takes the initiative to...

“The truth is, I knew nothing about the real story,” reveals “A Friend of the Family” director and producer Eliza Hittman. “So I came to it really with fresh eyes. I received the script from the writer, showrunner Nick Antosca, and it was just so exceptionally written, and the characters were so vivid on the page, and the world was so beautifully rendered that I just kind of devoured the script immediately.” We talked to Hittman as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. In Peacock’s A Friend of the Family, Jake Lacy plays Bob “B” Berchtold, a man who befriends a Midwestern Mormon family in the 1970s, only to kidnap their young daughter Jan not just once, but twice. It would be an unbelievable story if it weren’t true: Jan Broberg’s story was previously chronicled in the 2017 documentary Abducted in Plain Sight.
For Lacy, playing a kidnapper and pedophile was an emotional challenge for the actor, particularly given the ages of his victim: Jan was 12 and 14 when she was kidnapped. Hendrix Yancey, now 11, and Mckenna Grace, 16, play Jan at the different ages, while the real Jan Broberg and her mother, Mary Ann, were often on set as they served as producers on the limited series.

Jan Broberg Felt, the real-life woman at the heart of Peacock’s narrative series “A Friend of the Family,” wants people to realize her story could happen to anyone. Throughout the series’ nine episodes, audiences have watched Jan Broberg (played as a child by Hendrix Yancey and a teen by McKenna Grace) grow up as the groomed, manipulated victim of pedophile Robert Berchtold (Jake Lacy). And yet, for as wild as the story is, the real Broberg Felt reiterates everything was true.
For her, it was the key reason she decided to tell her story in a narrative format, after participating in a 2017 documentary called “Abducted in Plain Sight.” It was “telling the story in a way where you could be drawn into the characters, where you could see the psychology of a groomer, of a predator, and how they operate and lead not just the child, but lead the whole orbit around the child,...

Peacock retold the story of Jan Broberg and her abuser Robert Berchtold in the series "A Friend of the Family." Now, the real Broberg is speaking out in a new documentary from the streamer titled "A Friend of the Family: True Evil." The new documentary features Broberg confronting her story and interviews with her mother, Mary Ann Broberg. More than 50 years ago, Jan was kidnapped and abused by a family friend, Berchtold, who had affairs with both her parents in order to cover up his actions.
"Many harmed by child sexual assault and long-term abuse are still striving to heal and thrive years later," Broberg said in a statement. "Through support and community, the healing journey of 'Thrivivors' can create a ripple effect towards change for children, and I am grateful to Peacock for the opportunity to continue telling my story. It is my hope that with greater awareness and...

Jan Broberg is facing generational trauma head-on.
After Peacock’s “A Friend of the Family” dramatized the Broberg family abuse saga, starring Jake Lacy as Jan’s trusted neighbor turned abductor Bob “Brother B” Berchtold, Jan is taking audiences on her healing journey following the horrific aftermath of being abducted twice at ages 12 and 14. The true crime documentary, “A Friend of the Family: True Evil,” premieres November 15 on Peacock.
“There must be a special place in hell for people that hurt children,” Jan says in the trailer while walking past her “torture chamber” Rv camper where Berchtold kept her. Fifty years later, Jan revisits the scenes of the many crimes, including the bedroom where her abuse began and where police rescued her in Mexico. “True Evil” also features never-before-revealed information from another Berchtold victim, who Jan meets on her journey, as well as an emotional and honest conversation with Jan...

It was a documentary that brought Jan Broberg‘s shocking true story of her two-time childhood kidnapping to the world. The events of Netflix‘s Abducted in Plain Sight were dramatized in Peacock‘s A Friend of the Family, currently in-season. And now, Broberg is returning to this harrowing time of her life in the new documentary A Friend of the Family: True Evil coming to Peacock. The streamer has also revealed the official trailer and images from the upcoming series, set to premiere Tuesday, November 15. (The finale of A Friend of the Family drops November 10.) In it, Broberg will continue her lifelong journey of healing from the abuse she and her family endured at the hands of Robert “B” Berchtold, who died by suicide in 2005. If you’re watching Peacock’s new limited series “A Friend of the Family,” you’re undoubtedly doing so in disbelief. Following the lives of the Brobergs, an Idaho family whose eldest daughter, Jan, is twice kidnapped by a family friend, the series is heartbreaking and wild. So wild, in fact, that the real-life Jan Broberg introduces the premiere episode, seemingly in part to dispel claims the story is heavily fictionalized. It’s easy to see why if you’re familiar with the 2017 documentary “Abducted in Plain Sight,” which detailed the same story.
“Abducted in Plain Sight” tells the story in a far more matter-of-fact manner than the Peacock series, which ends each episode with a disclaimer that some events are included for dramatic effect (though it’s unclear how the story could become more dramatic). So what has been added? Let’s look at what “A Friend of the...

If you are a fan of Netflix's true-crime content, you most likely remember the kidnapping case of Jan Broberg examined in the 2017 documentary "Abducted in Plain Sight." The nature of Jan's kidnapping, as well as the emotional turmoil it caused the Broberg family, is a harrowing and deeply unsettling story that will make you question who you trust, no matter how close or friendly they may seem.
Following the documentary, Jan's case is once again being told, though this time through a dramatic lens in the Peacock series "A Friend of the Family," starring Colin Hanks, Anna Paquin, and Jake Lacy. Jan, along with her mother, Mary Ann Broberg, served as producers of the series, which premiered on Peacock on Oct. 6. Ahead, read all about what Jan is up to today.

Certain roles seem like they’d make an actor pause before signing on. And Jake Lacy notes he was asked whether playing pedophile Robert Berchtold, the man found to have kidnapped Jan Broberg Felt twice during her adolescent years, was a good idea. While speaking to IndieWire via Zoom, Lacy recounts how co-star Anna Paquin asked him if he or his representatives worried about him taking on the role. It’s a valid question, especially considering Lacy, prior to this year, has mostly been known for playing very sweet Good Guys.
But to hear Lacy recount the story, that was exactly what he was looking for from the part. “He [Berchtold] thinks he’s Steve McQueen,” Lacy said to IndieWire. “There’s so much to dive into. I get to be the force that changes the story.” He certainly does that. Playing Berchtold required Lacy to not only be despicable, but...

As someone who “makes documentaries as a side hustle,” Colin Hanks is used to telling true stories. That said, he wasn’t aware of Jan Broberg’s abduction and assault before he received the scripts for Peacock’s “A Friend of the Family.” And when he did, he still wasn’t sold.
“I was just instantly judging a book by its cover, saying, ‘I don’t want to play a super nice Mormon that goes through a bunch of stuff.’ There’s so much about it that just made me, at first, say ‘No, thank you,'” Hanks tells Variety. But after reading the first three scripts, he watched Netflix’s 2017 documentary, “Abducted in Plain Sight.”

Peacock has released a new trailer for the upcoming limited series "A Friend of the Family." It's based on the true story of the manipulation of the Broberg family in the 1970s and the grooming and multiple kidnappings of Jan Broberg by child predator Robert Berchtold.
If the names sound familiar, there's a reason for that. Not only did the real-life case get a book treatment from Mary Anne Broberg and Jan Broberg entitled "Stolen Innocence: The Jan Broberg Story," but it was made into the 2019 true crime documentary "Abducted in Plain Sight" that aired on Netflix.
The series follows the Brobergs through the relationship each of the parents and Jan had with Berchtold, the grooming, the wild stories he told her, and the kidnappings. I'm warning you now; it's hard to watch if you know what's coming.

The first teaser for A Friend of the Family is finally here. On Aug. 18, Peacock released a sneak peek at their highly anticipated true crime drama based on the 1970s kidnappings of Jan Broberg, which were also the subject of the wildly popular 2017 documentary Abducted in Plain Sight. The limited series stars The White Lotus' Jake Lacy as the sinister Robert Berchtold, who abducted Jan from her family not once, but twice, after befriending her parents Mary Ann (played by Anna Paquin) and Bob (portrayed by Colin Hanks). "What good luck that you folks moved in two blocks up," Bob says in the teaser before Robert's wife Gail (played by Lio Tipton) warns, "He gets these...

In the first look photos below, Lacy portrays the "charismatic, obsessed" neighbor of the Broberg family who kidnapped their teen daughter Jan not once, but twice. The show's description details exactly how he was able to pull off his crimes, noting, "The Brobergs—devoted to their faith, family, and...

In their just-wrapped 2021-2022 seasons, “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” tackled several more stories inspired by real life news. The “Svu” logline even tells us “Capt. Benson and her NYPD squad fight for justice in cases ripped straight from the headlines.” This season, those rips included riffs on Bill Cosby’s sexual assault case, the shocking true story behind the “Abducted in Plain Sight” documentary, and the murder trial of a well-connected political donor.
Although most carry the standard disclaimer “the following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event,” here are the real stories that, in part, inspired some of these seasons’ most riveting episodes.

Mckenna Grace is sticking with TV. The 15-year-old will star in Peacock’s A Friend of the Family, a true-crime limited series, alongside Anna Paquin, Jake Lacy (The White Lotus), Colin Hanks (The Offer), and Lio Tipton (Why Women Kill). A Friend of the Family is based on the chilling true story of the Broberg family, whose daughter, Jan, was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend,” Robert Berchtold. The family was previously the subject of the Netflix documentary film Abducted in Plain Sight. Jan and her mother, Mary Ann Broberg, are producers on the limited series. “The Brobergs — devoted to their faith, family, and community — were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them,” teases Peacock. “This is the story of how their lives were permanently altered — and how they survived.

The limited series from “The Act” producer Nick Antosca is the stranger-than-fiction story of Jan Broberg, whose kidnapping was told in 2017 Netflix doc “Abducted in Plain Sight.” As a child, her parents Bob and Mary Ann mistakenly put their trust in friend and neighbor, Robert Berchtold, who abducted Jan multiple times and manipulated her parents in jaw-dropping ways.
Grace, whose credits include “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and “The Haunting of Hill House,” will play the teen version of Jan. She joins previously announced cast members Anna Paquin as Mary Ann Broberg, Colin Hanks as Bob Boberg, Jake Lacy as Robert Berchtold, and Lio Tiptin as Robert’s wife, Gail Berchtold.
Jan Broberg and Mary Ann Broberg serve as producers on the series.

About a year before her sister, Brooke Preston, was brutally killed by their roommate Randy Herman, Jr. in 2017, Jordan Preston remembers driving with her from Sarasota, Florida, to West Palm Beach, where she had a job interview. On the car ride over, they accidentally hit a turtle in the middle of the road. Brooke was devastated. “It broke her heart. "It's almost impossible to wake up a sleepwalker." Hulu has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Dead Asleep, which (according to Hulu) puts "a ground-breaking new spin on the true-crime genre." From the award-winning director of Abducted in Plain Sight, Dead Asleep will take you through the true story of when a case of sleepwalking turned murder. The film follows and shares exclusive footage of the case of Randy Herman Jr., a man convicted of murdering his roommate, which he says he committed while sleepwalking in 2017. Crazy! This is for real?! It reminds me of the doc A Glitch in the Matrix, but that story is a bit scarier. This one seems fascinating. "Pulse Films has secured exclusive access to Herman and his family, the defense and prosecution attorneys, journalists who covered the case, forensic psychiatrists and world experts in violent parasomnia (sleep-walking) to give viewers an...

Freeform's latest thriller, Cruel Summer, is reminiscent of predecessors such as Pretty Little Liars with flashbacks, twists and turns, unsuspecting victims, and criminals - but is it purely fictional? The series takes place in a small, fictional Texas town over the course of three summers and centers on the disappearance of beautiful, popular teenager Kate and how unpopular girl Jeanette seemingly takes her place while she's missing. While Cruel Summer isn't based on a true story, there have been nods to some very famous true-crime cases. If you've been paying close attention, you might've picked up on a few.
In episode two, during a '95 scene, Kate is talking to her dad in their kitchen and she is eating pineapple chunks in milk. This is a reference to the JonBenét Ramsey case from the late '90s; true-crime aficionados will have picked up on that immediately, as it is...

Once upon a time, Netflix was simply a streaming service, which means it bought movies and TV shows from other companies and passed them to its subscribers. Then, when the streamer started making enough money, it began to finance its own productions to make content that was – now and always – exclusively available on its own platform.
That business model stuck around for quite a while and made the streamer lots of extra cash. But then coronavirus hit and as the global health crisis put a stop to moviemaking around the world, Netflix slowly reverted back to its original form as a simple video on demand service. For now, at least. This week, then, not unlike the weeks before it, brings a few delayed originals, and a ton of newly-acquired syndicated content.

Nick Antosca, who co-created Hulu’s “The Act,” is delving into another crazy real-life story.
The “Channel Zero” producer is teaming up with Ucp to develop a limited series about Jan Broberg and her multiple kidnappings. Ucp, a division of NBCUniversal Content Studios, nabbed the rights to Broberg’s stranger-than-fiction story series in what sources describe as a competitive bidding situation.
Broberg’s story was the subject of a Netflix documentary called “Abducted in Plain Sight.” Both Broberg and her mother Mary Ann are on board with this new project as producers.
The untitled Broberg series will follow the bizarre true story of how Jan was kidnapped multiple times over a period of years by a charismatic, obsessed family “friend.” The Brobergs — devoted to their faith, family, and community — were utterly unprepared for the sophisticated tactics their neighbor used to exploit their vulnerabilities, drive them apart, and turn their daughter against them.

Let's be honest: True crime shows and documentaries are all kinds of addictive. It's why people gawk when they see flashing lights or accidents in real life, they want to know what's happening. TV true crime offerings let viewers do just that from the comfort of their own homes, passing judgment on those involved from the safety of their couches and beds. Whether it's a scripted version of notorious crimes like Hulu's The Act, which retold the story of Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard, or a documentary featuring those directly involved in the crime, like Jan Broberg and Abducted in Plain Sight, true crime content is some of the best kinds of content. Especially now while most of the country adheres to...

In the directorial debut by Andrew Mecham and Matthew Whedon, Behind You relies on the classic haunted house trope to tell the story of two sisters, Olivia (Addy Miller) and Claire (Elizabeth Birkner), following the death of their mother, go to live with their estranged aunt, played by Jan Broberg who will be familiar to some from documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight (2017). Already armed with the knowledge that this house is no good, we don’t expect the two siblings to have much in the way of fun in their new abode.
Immediately the children are notified not to go into the basement and are, in addition warned that any strange noises in the house need no investigation on their part and are likely to be easily explained. This is where it lost me and I’m not sure it ever found me again. Within minutes of what we already...

A bewildering fan theory claims Tiger King star Joe Exotic’s confidant, Jeff Lowe, had at one point been married to their arch enemy, the political activist and zoo owner Carole Baskin.
Netflix’s latest documentary about the underbelly world of big cat domestication might be the most shocking bit of content to have come out this year. The story of zookeeper and tiger enthusiast turned convicted criminal, Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage, has many viewers scratching their heads, wondering how the events relayed in the doc could have possibly happened right under their noses this whole time.
Exotic was sentenced to 22 years in prison, not only on accounts of animal cruelty, but also his having conspired with Lowe to have Baskin, who’d been trying to put him out of business for years, killed. From the way the documentary is constructed though, it seems likely that Lowe orchestrated the murder plot...

The American Cinema Editors nominations for the Eddie Awards announced on Wednesday (December 11) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “The Irishman,” along with three of the other four films we’re predicting to reap bids in that race: “Ford v Ferrari,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” While the WWI epic “1917,” which is made to look like one continuous shot, was snubbed by the guild we expect it to be the fifth Academy Awards contender.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman” and “Parasite” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Joker” and “Marriage Story.” Facing off against “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” on the comedy side are “Dolemite is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Knives Out.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in Toronto this week, the Hot Docs Forum will once again showcase some of the most anticipated films slated to hit the documentary world. Over the course of the two-day event, 20 pre-selected projects will be presented to a round table of industry insiders from around the globe, including leading commissioning editors, film fund representatives, public financiers, private investors, festival programmers, sales agents and distributors.
“Pitching in a forum such as Hot Docs is as much a promotional and market validation and marketing exercise as it is a financing one—to be able to establish an auteur, a visionary, a filmmaker, and have them in a really quick, seven-minute way present their work to the entire international documentary community in one place,” said Hot Docs industry program director Elizabeth Radshaw. “It’s as much about cultivating that individual project as it is about cultivating the production companies and the artists themselves.

The true crime documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight, which recently appeared on Netflix, initially seems to be a nightmarish but otherwise unremarkable suburban kidnapping story. So close that the Broberg girls come to view Berchtold, known as “B,” like a second father, especially middle daughter Jan. Somewhat predictably,...
