There are lots of changes from last week's top five lists of most viewed shows and movies on Netflix. The latest details are now on Tudum and reveal eight new entries across the two lists. Time then to take a closer look at whats new and the two that remained.

With lots of movies being added over recent weeks and a few departing from the platform, some changes were almost inevitable. Though I didn't expect to see just one remain unchanged from last week. As is often the case, some favorite old characters make a reappearance, too.

Likewise, in terms of shows there were some big hitters arriving on our screens recently. That's definitely had an impact this week with just one remaining from the previous week. The list highlights the ongoing popularity of a docuseries to get behind a story we know and fits well alongside the demand for great drama and thrillers.

Audiences are seemingly still enthralled by Gabby Petito’s disappearance, flocking to Netflix’s latest docuseries about the tragedy nearly four years later.

American Murder: Gabby Petito put up a massive 31.3M views from February 17 to February 23, reaching No. 1 on the English-language TV list globally. It was among the Top 10 in 90 countries, per Netflix.

Universal’s “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” delivered a record-breaking debut at the U.K. and Ireland box office, grossing £12.3 million ($15.5 million) in its opening four-day weekend, according to Comscore. The highly anticipated fourth installment in the “Bridget Jones” franchise not only secured the biggest opening of the year but also made history as the highest-grossing romantic comedy debut ever in the region, surpassing the previous record set by “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.”

Universal reports that the U.K. and Ireland opening for “Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy” was across 2,250 screens. The film claimed the title of the highest-ever opening for a Working Title production and landed as the 11th biggest Universal opening of all time in the market, ranking just behind “Jurassic World Dominion” and ahead of the opening weekends of “Oppenheimer,” “Minions” and “Despicable Me 3.”

Moana 2 is still afloat at the box office despite facing multiple releases, and it recently surpassed Despicable Me 3 at the all-time highest-grossing list to further solidify its position in the top 50. It has also beaten Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as one of the top 30 all time highest-grossing films ever in the United States. Scroll below for the deets.

The MCU movie was released in 2022 and is the second installment in the Black Panther franchise. It was directed by Ryan Coogler featuring Letitia Wright as Shuri / Black Panther, alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, Mabel Cadena, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Martin Freeman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Angela Bassett. Disney’s Moana 2 is still touching new milestones despite being available on digital platforms. It has now surpassed Finding Dory and Despicable Me 3’s worldwide haul to solidify its position in the Top 50 all-time grosser list. The film collected strong numbers on its 10th weekend across the international markets to achieve such an amazing feat. Scroll below for the deets.

Finding Dory is also a Disney movie produced by the Pixar Animation Studios and part of the Finding Nemo franchise. It is both a sequel and spin-off following the events of Finding Nemo. It collected $486.29 million in the US and $1.029 billion worldwide. The animated feature is now the 50th highest-grossing film of all time, beaten by the Moana sequel.

Disney’s Moana 2 is still unstoppable despite clocking in over one billion worldwide. It is still minting a significant amount of money at the box office and has now surpassed Zootopia. It is set to beat Finding Dory’s global haul to enter the list of the top 10 highest-grossing animated movies of all time. Zootopia is an animated buddy cop comedy movie released in 2016. It was directed by Byron Howard and won the Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards. Still a lot of holdover business in the early part of the year at the international box office as we ride out late-2024 releases. That shouldn’t take away from the fact that Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King – which, recall, initially started softer than expected – now leads a global weekend for the 6th time in a row.

Meanwhile, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is still tearing up records. After becoming the biggest of the franchise globally last weekend, it’s now tops for the trilogy overseas.

Starting with Mufasa, the worldwide total to date is $626.7M, while the running international cume is $405.6M.

Overseas, Mufasa added $15.4M this session (-29%) and is still the No. 1 non-local film in France, Germany, Spain, Brazil and the Latin American region overall as well as many smaller markets.

“Back in Action” scored the biggest Netflix weekend debut an English language movie has seen since 2022.

The Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz-led action movie brought in 46.8 million views on Netflix during its opening weekend, marking the most views in a premiere weekend for an English-language movie since 2022’s “The Adam Project.”

“Back in Action,” which reached No. 1 in 85 countries, was the most-watched English language movie for the week of Jan. 13, outpacing viewership for “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” which took the No. 2 spot with 8.9 million views, and “The Secret Life of Pets,” which was third on the list with 5.2 million views. “Knight and Day” took fourth place with 5.2 million views, holiday thriller “Carry-On” took fifth place with 3.6 million views and “Despicable Me 3” took sixth place with 3.4 million views.

The year 2024 was undoubtedly a fantastic year for animated movies. Inside Out 2 surpassed Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time at the worldwide box office. It made just shy of $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office, positioning it as the highest-grossing movie of the year. It was not the only animated movie to achieve success. In fact, four of 2024's top 10 highest-grossing movies were animated films, including Despicable Me 4, Moana 2, and Kung Fu Panda 4.

About the Franchise –

The franchise was created by Sergio Pablos, Cinco Paul, and Ken Daurio. The films are produced by Illumination and distributed by its parent company, Universal Pictures. The first film came out in 2010, and it was directed by Chris Renaud and Pierre Coffin. Meanwhile, the fourth film has only been directed by Chris Renaud. There are four films in the Despicable Me film series and two prequel series, Minions and Minions: The Rise of Gru. However, we will only rank the Despicable Me films.

Paramount animation Transformers One dethroned Joker: Folie À Deux at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, as the Warner Bros blockbuster suffered a significant 75% drop.

Transformers One opened to £1.6m in 583 sites at a £2,744 average – down on the stellar £8.7m of 2007’s Transformers and £8.3m of 2009’s Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, but still a decent opening for an animated feature.

Despicable Me 4 now has a streaming release date after dominating in theaters this summer. Directed by Chris Renaud, the fourth installment in the popular Despicable Me franchise follows Gru (Steve Carell) as he faces off against new rival Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) while also dealing with the arrival of the baby Gru Jr. Reviews for Despicable Me 4 were mixed from critics, but the film, which also features voice acting from Kristen Wiig, Sofa Vergara, and Joey King, was a box office success, grossing over $953 million worldwide.

ComicBook.com now reveals that Despicable Me 4 will start streaming on Peacock on October 31, meaning audiences still have about a month to wait. This streaming release date comes nearly two months after the film first became available on VOD. The film will be joining both Despicable Me (2010) and Despicable Me 2 (2013) on Peacock, with Despicable Me 3 (2017) streaming instead on Fubo.

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock had a big July and a massive August thanks almost exclusively to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Netflix had an equally massive January-to-June, in part because of all NBCUniversal’s animated movies available on the streamer.

In case you’ve been living under a mountain of other Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, on Thursday, September 19, Netflix shared more than 16,000 lines of its viewership data from the first half of 2024. It lists every show or movie watched on Netflix around the globe, how many views each had, and for how many hours they were watched. Light reading material for us.

Twice a year, there are endless takeaways from Netflix’s data dump. One of the big ones from this set was just how dominant NBCUniversal’s animated films are — only not on NBCUniversal’s own streaming platform, Peacock.

Netflix unveiled the first big data dump of 2024 on Thursday, and the engagement report for everything watched in the first half of the year proved that subscribers really love three things: Millie Bobby Brown, sharks and animated movies.

Some of the data points were unsurprising – we knew Brown’s “Damsel” was a huge hit, and indeed it was the most-watched film for the first half of the year. But others were interesting, like just how heavily Netflix’s streaming partnership with Universal factors into what’s being watched and the relative success of Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” films.

Universal animation Despicable Me 4 rose back to the top of the UK-Ireland box office chart on its eighth weekend in cinemas, boosted by National Cinema Day on Saturday, August 31.

Despicable Me 4 fell a slim 12% across the weekend, with its Saturday takings up 23% compared to the previous Saturday.

Since the release of Despicable Me, Gru's (Steve Carell) cute yet mischievous 'Minions' (voiced by Pierre Coffin) have become a household staple worldwide. Due to the popularity of the characters, it wasn't long until the Minions got their own movie titled Minions in 2015, introducing three fan-favorites; Kevin, Stuart and Bob. Each has different personality traits, making them adored by viewers, from Kevin's serious, protective nature, to Stuart's laid back, cool demeanor, and Bob's cute, innocent naivety. The excessive popularity surrounding the characters paints the question of their whereabouts in the latest installment of the franchise, Despicable Me 4.

Although audience members are upset by the apparent absence of the characters, there are many reasons that explain their lack of screen time in Despicable Me 4. Because of its current dominance in the world of kiddie entertainment, it may take a moment's reflection to recall that Chris Renaud's and Pierre Coffin's 2010 animated film "Despicable Me" once felt the slightest bit subversive. The main character of "Despicable Me" was the Eastern European supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) who aimed to commit visible acts of spiteful villainy. His latest plan was to steal the moon out of the sky, merely for the infamy it would garner him. 

"Despicable Me" takes place in a world that's overrun by villains, thieves, and superpowered monster people, but is seemingly absent of heroes. It won't be until later sequels that a crime-fighting Mi-6-type organization would come into play. Later still, Gru would renounce his villainy and become a dippy suburban dad to a trio of precocious girls. In "Despicable Me 4," Gru also has a wife and an infant son.

The animated film “Despicable Me 4” is staying popular with moviegoers across the globe. Now in its seventh week in theaters, it has brought in $847 million worldwide. $340 million of that came from United States and Canada audiences, with the other $506 million from international markets.

This performance puts “Despicable Me 4” among only three movies released in 2024 to make over $500 million overseas. The others are “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Experts predict the movie will soon pass $850 million globally and may even reach $900 million.

The movie had initial struggles against the Pixar film “Inside Out 2” when both came out. However, it regained momentum thanks to the long-time appeal of its fun characters and humor. Audiences of all ages have enjoyed watching the misadventures of villain-turned-hero Gru and his family of minions.

Sony’s It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively, wooed audiences at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office with a huge £4.5m, taking top spot and ending the two-week run in first of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The romantic drama based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name took an excellent £7,087 location average from 630 sites.

The U.K. and Ireland box office hit £103.3 million ($132.5 million) in July, marking the strongest monthly performance since December 2023, according to numbers from Comscore.

Despite this uptick, the year-to-date total remains 14% behind 2023’s figures, largely due to the absence of a “Barbenheimer”-level phenomenon this summer.

Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” led the pack with £28.2 million after three weeks. The animated sequel has already surpassed the lifetime gross of the original “Despicable Me” (£20.2 million) and is tracking 4% ahead of “Despicable Me 3” at the same point. It currently stands as the third-biggest release of 2024, behind only “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part II.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” landed at No. 2 with £25.3 million in just eight days. The Marvel entry from Disney scored the year’s highest three-day opening at £12.6 million and set a new record for 15-rated releases. Among superhero titles, only six films have opened higher in the territory.

Sunday Update: Marvel/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine has shredded expectations, opening to $438.3M worldwide. The international box office portion is $233.3M with domestic at $205M.

As Anthony has reported, this is the biggest R-rated opening of all time domestically; it’s also tops globally, surpassing Deadpool ($264M in like-for-like markets excluding China at current rates), as well as internationally, overtaking Joker ($147M) on a like-for-like basis at current rates. Further, this is the biggest worldwide and international opening of the year, and tops since Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022.

The MCU has now surpassed $30B worldwide ($30.3B).

Overseas, where all markets opened, BFFs Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman front the No. 1 non-local movie everywhere. The start (excluding China where the previous films did not release) is 56% ahead of Deadpool and 50% above Deadpool 2. D&w is also 37% ahead of Joker.

You’ve probably seen Inside Out 2 because, well, it seems like everyone has. As of today, the Pixar film has become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time globally, raking in over $1.462 billion at the box office.

The animated film accomplished this feat six weeks after its initial release, officially surpassing Frozen 2, which had held the title since 2019.

Inside Out 2 now sits as the 13th highest-grossing film in the history of the global box office. Among its other accomplishments, it has become the fastest animated title to reach $1 billion globally (19 days) and the only movie to hit 10 figures thus far in 2024. It also holds the record for the biggest global opening of all time for an animated feature ($292 million), as well as the second-biggest domestic opening of all time for an animated feature ($154 million).

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has iced out fellow Disney release Frozen II to become the top-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time at the worldwide box office after finishing Tuesday with $1.462 billion, not adjusted for inflation. The film’s domestic total stands at $601 million, while it has grossed $861.8 million internationally.

Disney Animation’s Frozen II topped out at $1.451 billion in 2019. It now rests at No. 2 on the all-time animated list followed by Illumination and Universal’s video game adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion), the first Frozen ($1.274 billion), Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion), Illumination’s Minions ($1.157 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.072 billion), Despicable Me 3 ($1.032 billion) and Finding Dory ($1 billion).

Among all films, Inside Out 2 laughed its way past Warner Bros.’ 2023 summer juggernaut Barbie ($1.446 billion) on Monday to land at No. 13 on the list of all time grossing films, animated or otherwise.

Despicable Me 4 withstood the Twisters whirlwind at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, as the Universal animation held top spot for a second successive weekend.

Despicable Me 4 added £4.9m – a 49% drop on its opening session, which brought it to £17.4m from two weekends in play. The film took a strong £2.3m on Saturday alone.

It has been 14 years since Despicable Me first hit the theatres in 2010. On 5th July, 2024 the fourth installment in the franchise or ‘fourthquel’, began its theatrical run. Not much about the characters has changed. Of course, Gru is no more the bad guy. But he’s still the same. So are his girls, and the minions, as well as the movie’s stellar performance at the Box Office. The franchise has already broken some crazy Box Office records. “Successor,” a Chinese-produced comedy drama about escape from poverty, opened on top of the mainland China box office over the latest weekend. “Despicable Me 4,” performed well, but landed only in third position.

Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway shows “Successor” earned RMB358 million ($50.4 million) between Friday and Sunday. The film charts the ups and downs of a poor dad and a hardworking mom, living in a broken yard and seemingly having fallen behind others on the road to prosperity.

According to an official synopsis, “Ma Chenggang and Ma Chunlan, ride their donkey to work and see their son, Ma Jiye, as their only hope of turning their fate around. Jiye is very promising, excelling academically every year. He is tough and determined. But as Jiye grows up, he perceives that the people around him are becoming more and more strange.”

“Despicable Me 4” loomed large at the international box office, earning a mighty $88 million to top charts. The animated sequel’s global haul now stands at $437.8 million. Over the weekend, the “Despicable Me” series of movies became the first animated franchise in history to cross the $5 billion mark.

“Despicable Me 4” brings back Steve Carell as Gru, a reformed supervillain, and pits him against Will Ferrell as Maxime Le Mal, a former schoolmate turned bad guy and rival. The movie is playing in nearly 80 foreign markets, including China, where it debuted across 35,000 screens and 11,000 locations to earn $11.8 million. Universal and Illumination produced the movie.
