This is the story of Milagros Baez, a lonely young Puerto Rican woman from Spanish Harlem who secretly longs for a different life. She spends her days and nights as a stock girl at a local grocery market, and comes home at night to a controlling and abusive father who has never recovered from her mothers death. An avid reader, Millie fantasizes about going to college and becoming a writer. But in her world, this is not a realistic goal. With no one on her side, she is resigned to living in the projects of El Barrio and working at a grocery store for the rest of her life.
But when she meets Mateo, a former Young Lord, her entire life is changed.

Pretty decent film

I saw this film on HBO On Demand(film is done almost entirely in English), and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It has a documentary feel to it at times, as the film moves well between the history of the Young Lords of New York City and the modern life of young Puertorricans in today's New York.

The film started slowly and a bit clumsily, but got better as it moved on. As was stated in another review, the film receives merit simply for the topic, but it does seem to have some problems, mainly with timing, editing, and some not so good acting at times. For example, plot lines were thrown out there and never finished up. Still, I think this film is important, as it brings to light The Young Lords and their movement of the late 60s.

Great Blend of Fiction and Fact

This deserves a 10 just for the rarity of the subject. There are so few movies that deal with The Young Lords, the Puerto Rican Black Panthers, and their efforts and contributions during the revolution of the 1960s and 70s.

The movie is a great blend of fiction and documentary and the transitions are smooth. The interviews with the aging members of the Lords felt real and I recognized Felipe Luciano, who I know was a Lord. Further, the actors in the narrative were representative of Latinos physically, a good mix of both color and size.

But more than anything, there were moments of poetry in the script. Moments, I almost cried. As a Latina, I am proud.
