“They gave up on me a long time ago,” filmmaker Richard Linklater joked this afternoon during a press conference in Berlin for his latest flick, Blue Moon.
The veteran Golden Bear winner was referring to the Hollywood film industry, and what he believes they have given up on is his ability to make traditional, commercially-minded movies.
“I don’t think I’ve compromise at all over the years. We have no pressure. We do whatever we want,” Linklater added in reference to Blue Moon. “This was a small-budget movie. There’s no test screenings or anything like that.”
Blue Moon is Linklater’s 25th film and his ninth collaboration with his longtime muse, Ethan Hawke. The pair were characteristically cool this afternoon at the press conference. They were joined by Margaret Qualley (The Substance) and Andrew Scott (Ripley), who also star in the movie.

It wasn’t her intention, but Taylor Swift saved this weekend as well as ones still to come.
“The Era Tour” concert film opens Friday with over $100 million in estimated presales, but it already forced “The Exorcist: Believer” (Universal), originally set for October 13, to move up a week and get out of the way.
As a result, the sequel to William Friedkin’s smash hit dominated this weekend with $27.2 million. That’s more than double the #2 title, “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount), with $11.8 million.
All told, this weekend grossed around $75 million. Without “Exorcist,” and assuming other titles would pick up some of the slack, that number would have been closer to $55 million — and close to the worst of 2023. Instead, it improved $16 million (27 percent) over last year, which also included Indigenous Peoples’/Columbus Day on Monday. Year to date remains up about 26 percent.

When writer-director Rebecca Miller was playing back her latest film “She Came to Me,” she felt it was missing a compelling song. The National’s singer-turned-composer Bryce Dessner was sitting next to her when the thought entered: Bruce Springsteen would be perfect.
Dessner was drawing inspiration from Marisa Tomei’s character Katrina, who he describes as “a muse and this gutsy character. She’s a miraculous, amazing and powerful woman. She just felt like she could be a character from a Springsteen song,” he says.
Miller, who used the Springsteen hit “Dancing in the Dark” in her 2015 film “Maggie’s Plan,” loved the idea of Springsteen writing the end credits song. “It was an absurd idea, but it just came to me,” Dessner tells Variety. “What would normally feel insurmountable to most people is not the thing that occurs to Rebecca first, but she said, ‘Oh, that’s interesting.'”

Marisa Tomei plays a lovelorn — and love-addicted! — tugboat captain in writer-director Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me.” That may sound twee in theory, but Miller and Tomei anchor the character, an unpretentious and brazen-foot-forward woman named Katrina, in an emotional reality for this screwball indie comedy.
No one character gets top billing in “She Came to Me,” whether Katrina, or the writer’s-blocked opera composer Steven (Peter Dinklage) she seduces before becoming his muse, or Steven’s wife Patricia (Anne Hathaway), an uber-organized psychiatrist who thinks she’s breezy but most certainly isn’t.
The film shot on location in Brooklyn, whose harbor Katrina operates out of. In the film, Steven, faced with losing a major commission, takes a long, lonely walk that lands him in the arms and bed of Katrina, who ultimately becomes the subject of his next hugely successful opera.

Vertical is shifting the theatrical release of Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy “She Came to Me” by a week. The film, which stars Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway and Marisa Tomei, will open on Oct. 6 instead of Sept. 29, when it was originally slated to premiere. Vertical opted to change its release strategy after Apple decided to move the opening of Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” to later in the month. “She Came to Me” was granted an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which means that the cast will be able to do promotional activity around its release despite the fact that actors are on strike against major studios and streamers.
“In light of ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ release date shift, we jumped at the opportunity for the Oct. 6 date for ‘She Came to Me,'” Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey commented. “It is a competitively less crowded weekend which...

Peter Dinklage takes creative inspiration from a sexual experience with Marisa Tomei amid marital struggles between himself and Anne Hathaway in the first trailer for She Came to Me.
Rebecca Miller (Maggie’s Plan) wrote and directed the romantic-comedy film that hits theaters Sept. 29 from Vertical Entertainment. The feature centers on an opera composer (Dinklage) who is married to a therapist (Hathaway) and has a fling with a tugboat captain (Tomei), which leads to a professional breakthrough for him. Brian d’Arcy James and Joanna Kulig also star.
“I’m suffering from a temporary blockage at the moment,” Dinklage says in the footage. Later in the trailer, Tomei tells him, “I was really angry at you, and now it turns out I’m your muse.”
She Came to Me counts Danny Cohen, Amanda Ghost and Vince Holden as executive producers. Hathaway, Miller, Len Blavatnik, Damon Cardasis, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon are producers.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

Vertical announced today that they have acquired the US rights to the Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway romantic comedy “She Came to Me,” which opened the Berlin Film Festival in February of this year.
“She Came to Me” is written and directed by Rebecca Miller (“Maggie’s Plan”) and, per the official synopsis, “follows Steven Lauddem (Dinklage), a composer who is plagued by a creative block which leaves him unable to finish the score for his big comeback opera. When his former therapist-turned wife Patricia (Hathaway) suggests he rekindle his creativity by getting lost in the city, Steven sets out in search of inspiration. His epiphany comes after he meets a spirited woman named Katrina (Marisa Tomei) and discovers his life has much more potential than he bargained for, or ever could have imagined.”
Vertical has not determined a release date yet, but said the film will be receiving a theatrical release.

No genre of the last few decades can get on my nerves like the indie quirkfest. You know: those movies that keep poking you in the ribs to giggle at their cutely addled characters with their adorable eccentricities — I’m talking woe-is-us hipster comedies like “Pieces of April,” “Lars and the Real Girl” and the pop-crossover “Citizen Kane” of the genre, “Little Miss Sunshine.” The trouble with these movies is that even as they pretend to be lifesize, they’re too conscious about packaging their prefab weirdness; they’re edgy sitcoms minus the laugh tracks. But Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” which opened the Berlin Film Festival today, demonstrates how the indie quirkfest can be resonant and real, with characters who have soul instead of a chewy center.
The movie’s main figures aren’t just suffering from off-kilter dilemmas — they have problems we might characterize as everyday mental illness.

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. Vertical releases the film in theaters on Friday, October 6.
Rebecca Miller makes romances. And comedies. And dramas. With character studies still beholden to crazy plots, she’s covered everything from drug addiction to infidelity, incest to ambition. A Rebecca Miller film means releasing expectations, eschewing glossy images and tidy plots, and embracing the mess inherent in life itself. Her films are wild, dreamy, sad, funny — and not at all realistic.
That’s certainly the case with “She Came to Me,” which follows a loosely connected group of people all made absolutely crazy by love. Miller delights in toying with what sounds like a cutesy concept, stretching it to wacky (and occasionally wonderful) ends. It may be most closely aligned with her previous film, the 2015 “Maggie’s Plan” (it also poked at the idea of modern romance), but it...

She Came to Me has designs on being a grand opera, but it’s definitely more of what the British call a panto. Opening at a swanky cocktail reception as a male tenor offhandedly begins singing the famous “Habanera” from Carmen, we’re introduced to the sketchily imaged beau monde existence of one Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), blocked opera composer extraordinaire. He’s toasting his first commission following a breakdown, through which he met and then wed his psychiatrist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), but artistic inspiration again eludes him. They enjoy a cosseted, Brooklyn townhouse-inhabiting existence, familiar from Woody Allen and earlier Noah Baumbach pictures––a hint at the weirdly dated manner of this film where lead characters are immune from the expected satire, humbling, or cross-examination, and instead indulged for unfunny farce.

The light touch that made Rebecca Miller’s last film, Maggie’s Plan, so enjoyable is nowhere to be found in She Came to Me, a clunky multistrand romance with such a terminal case of whimsy that almost none of its characters or their relationships ring true. Get this: Peter Dinklage plays a creatively stalled avant-garde opera composer; Anne Hathaway is a controlling therapist who randomly ditches her chic wardrobe for a nun’s habit; Marisa Tomei is a tugboat captain prone to romantic obsessions; and Brian d’Arcy James is a court stenographer heavily into Civil War reenactments.
If you’re wondering how much quirk one movie can take, you’re not alone, raising the question of how it ever got cast, let alone made. Yet somehow, it did, even landing a tinkly score by Bryce Dessner of The National and an original Bruce Springsteen song for the end credits, appropriately titled “Addicted to Romance.

The consistently disjointed ensemble dramedy “She Came to Me” never settles on a sensible tone to match its anxious, but well-meaning characters, most of whom are neither so ridiculous nor so tragic to be either laugh aloud funny or convincingly dramatic.
Writer/director Rebecca Miller (“Maggie’s Plan”) celebrates her protagonists’ variable qualities with mixed results in this comedy of cringe-y errors, which follows two teenagers who get caught up in their high-strung parents’ romantic crises. The movie’s older cast members, led by Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway, and Marisa Tomei, add some value to Miller’s lifeless scenario, which trails after Dinklage’s creatively blocked opera composer, his muse, and his elusive psychiatrist wife, played with typical poise by Hathaway.
Miller struggles to capture some qualities that Dinklage, as panic attack-prone composer Steven, uses to describe the anti-heroic lead of his new opera. Steven takes inspiration from Katrina (Tomei), a sardonic,...

Actress and producer Anne Hathaway took a moment to puncture the film-world bubble surrounding the 73rd Berlinale on Thursday, using a portion of the press conference for her latest movie She Came to Me to address the bigger global picture.
“I want to express my gratitude to the film festival for including a hero of our times and for giving us all the opportunity to amplify the message of Ukraine, which is the almost universal desire for peace,” the actress said.
Hathaway was responding to the unlikely pairing of her New York-set romantic comedy and a public video address from Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Festival organizers revealed Wednesday that the Ukraine leader would speak at the Berlinale’s opening ceremony, using the platform to call for solidarity with Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia. Shortly after the war-time leader’s speech, the Berlinale will begin with the world premiere of She Came to Me.

Peter Dinklage has spoken candidly about turning 50 and weighing up his future as an actor over the next three decades.
The “Game of Thrones” star leads Rebecca Miller’s new film “She Came to Me,” which opens the Berlin Film Festival on Thursday. In the movie, Dinklage plays Steven, a moody classical composer struggling with an oppressive writer’s block that prevents him from delivering his next opera.
At a press conference ahead of the premiere, the film’s cast was asked how they deal with creative blocks of their own.
“I’m 53. I wonder if I want to be an actor for the next 30 years,” said Dinklage. “It’s a fork in the road. It’s a common story when you hit 50: there’s a fork in the road and you either wait for inspiration or you seek it out, and I intend to keep seeking it out.

Berlin, Feb 16 (Ians) If you ask Rebecca Miller, it’s getting harder and harder to make movies about people in a room talking, reports ‘Variety’.
That particular brand of intimate, personal storytelling, the kind the director of ‘Maggie’s Plan’ and ‘The Private Lives of Pippa Lee’ is known for, is a challenging prospect for financiers weighing up a Darwinian landscape for cinemagoing.
It’s why Miller’s latest, ‘She Came to Me’, which opens the Berlin Film Festival on Thursday, feels like a triumph for the American director (who’s also the playwright Arthur Miller’s daughter), who marks her return to narrative features after an eight-year hiatus, notes ‘Variety’.

She Came to Me, a romantic comedy from director and screenwriter Rebecca Miller (Maggie’s Plan) that stars Peter Dinklage and Anne Hathaway, will open the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival on Feb. 16.
Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig and Brian d’Arcy James co-star in the U.S. feature from Protagonist Pictures, which will have its world premiere out of competition in Berlin.
With the pick, Berlin is returning to form, selecting a potential audience-pleaser with strong star power to kick off the festival. Set in New York, She Came to Me features Dinklage as a composer with writer’s block, struggling to complete his big comeback opera. On the suggestion of his wife, and former therapist, played by Hathaway, he sets out in search of inspiration, getting more than he bargained for.

After I watched the rough cut of Aviva Kempner's The Spy Behind Home Plate, the director invited me to meet her at Soundtracks F/T, where re-recording mixer Tom Fleischman, Oscar-winner for Martin Scorsese's Hugo (with John Midgley) and nominee for The Aviator, Gangs of New York, Jonathan Demme's The Silence Of The Lambs, and Warren Beatty's Reds, was working on her documentary on the elusive Moe Berg. Ira Spiegel, Aviva's sound editor, was also on hand inside Stage B, where Tom was working on the film.

"The voice is the important thing - that you don't go silent." HBO has debuted a trailer for the documentary titled Arthur Miller: Writer, about the life and work of iconic playwright Arthur Miller. Filmmaker Rebecca Miller (The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Maggie's Plan), who just so happens to be Arthur Miller's daughter, has created this documentary built around impromptu interviews shot over many years in the family home. She has crafted a very candid and personal portrait of her father, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (of A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, A View from the Bridge) who was also a popular public figure - he testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, and was married to Marilyn Monroe at one point. This doc feels like it's much deeper than just a profile of Miller, considering there's so much intimate footage of him, telling the...

"I want you to be the very best version of yourself that you can be."
I've got a wonderful trailer here for a quirky and whimsical coming-of-age comedy called Lady Bird. The film was directed by Greta Gerwig, who is an actress mostly known for her roles in films such as Mistress America and Maggie's Plan. The movie is a semi-autobiographical film and it stars Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn, The Grand Budapest Hotel) in the role of the character based on Gerwig.
In Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s...

Nothing short of extraordinary, Thomas Riedelsheimer’s “Leaning into the Wind – Andy Goldsworthy” rekindles the captivating observation of English artist Andy Goldsworthy at this year’s San Fransisco International Film Festival. Reidelsheimer premiered one of his first English-language documentaries in 2002 at Sfiff, with his first documentary focused on artist Andy Goldsworthy’s work, “River and Tides – Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time.”

Receiving unexpected acclaim, “Rivers and Tides” got picked up for distribution, eventually making its way to Roger Ebert, where he gave the film four stars. Reidelsheimer returns to the fest this year with the second installment of Andy Goldsworthy’s work, “Leaning into the Wind – Andy Goldsworthy.”
This year, Sfiff has programmed a new, highly selective, section of the festival titled Launch. Only five films live within the Launch section...

Currently in the editing bay for Lady Bird, her directorial debut which she also wrote, Greta Gerwig is on the press circuit for several 2016 films by writer/directors and respected auteurs, which somehow seems fitting. There's Maggie's Plan, from Rebecca Miller, and Pablo Larrain's elegant Jackie, but the apex for Gerwig this year would be her turn as young, artistic cancer survivor Abbie in Mike Mill's 20th Century Women. A film layered densely with beautiful…...

2017 has two new Greta Gerwig films on the horizon. We salute some of her finest work to date...
2016 was a cold dark year by and large (except for those few sweaty months we spent stuck on trains or queueing for festival toilets along with the rest of the hip youth). Years like 2016 need to be liberally sprinkled with delight and positivity as far as possible to make them bearable, and thankfully for us much of that can be found in filmy form to make the transition from 2016 to 2017 as pain-free as possible. So thank goodness for the work of one actress who manages to offer a tangible glimpse into the kind of honest, sweet, true and hopeful lives that we all might actually have a shot at leading.
I'm talking, of course, about Greta Gerwig.
For the uninitiated, the delightfully named Greta Celeste Gerwig could be described...

The casting slots for Netflix's Lost in Space series continue to fill up, as another actress has joined the reimagining's ranks to play a member of the Robinson family.
Deadline reports that Mina Sundwall is set to co-star in the new Lost in Space as Penny, the middle child of the Robinson family. Penny was portrayed by Angela Cartwright in the original Lost in Space series that aired from 1965–1968 on CBS.
Sundwall joins a cast that includes Toby Stephens and Molly Parker as the Robinson parents, Parker Posey as the villainous Dr. Smith, and Ignacio Serricchio as Don West.
Sundwall has steadily put together an impressive list of film credits, appearing in Freeheld, Maggie's Plan, and Tara Subkoff's #Horror, in which she played the key role of Francesca (see below).
Season one of the new Lost in Space series will consist of ten episodes and is slated to premiere in 2018 on Netflix.

The new “Little Women” film adaptation is finally underway at Sony Pictures. The Tracking Board reports that Greta Gerwig is set to rewrite the script for the remake of the classic Louisa May Alcott novel. The previous screenwriter attached was Sarah Polley.
Originally published in 1868, “Little Women” tells the story of the four March sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, and their passage from childhood to womanhood.

This weekend Dory swam easily past Captain America to become the biggest grossing Us hero of the year. (Captain America still leads internationally by a lot, which is funny if you think about it). That's quite impressive for a forgetful blue tang who could have gone 'straight to video' -- Wait, are we still saying that? If not, what's the new phrase. I'm scared of what this means for the future with all those cheapie animated sequels but it is what happened. The current top ten of 2016 includes only two originals (Zootopia & Central Intelligence) but otherwise it's all brand extensions / revisions. It didn't use to be this way but it's been a slow erosion. Consider by comparison: 2006's top ten had 5 originals; 1996 had 6; 1986 had 7. Since we get less original hits every year how soon until we have none?
It should be noted that an original won the weekend but since...

★★★★☆ The Weltanschauung of New York's upper-middle intelligentsia is almost custom built for a good run- a-round comedy of manners. Rebecca Miller's latest film, Maggie's Plan, is one more addition to a considerable canon of light, loving satire that laughs at the pretensions and follies of the over-educated as they luxuriate in so-called 'high-class problems'. It's a delightful movie that makes conscious nods to Shakespeare's comic contrivances and is similar in spirit to Noah Baumbach's While We're Young.
