The purple cloth around Sock's waist is a skirt.

Throughout the film Sock is referred to with he/him pronouns. Director Erica Wester wanted it clear that he is a boy who "intentionally blurs some gender norms", such as with the skirt and the higher pitched voice (provided by female voice actress Ann Mendenhall). The 2013 Welcome to Hell short film is Wester's senior thesis animation. Prior to the film, an unfinished webcomic also titled Welcome to Hell posted to her DeviantArt account from 2010 to 2011 tells a similar version of the events presented early in the film. Images and ideas surrounding the characters of Sock Sowachowski, Jonathan Combs, and Mephistopheles date back as far as 2007 on her DeviantArt account.
