The line between animation and live action is brilliantly blurred in “Blue Eye Samurai,” the 2D/3D hybrid animated action series set during Edo-period Japan. It’s “Mulan” meets “Game of Thrones,” in which Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine) — a mixed-race, lone-wolf warrior — lives in disguise seeking revenge on the four white men who made her a “creature of shame”.
“Blue Eye Samurai” represents a bold, cinematic leap in TV adult animation that’s driven by the period-authentic scope and spectacle. All eight episodes are treated as a different genre, and the graphic violence and sex are enhanced by the stylistic poetry of the animated form (the characters are inspired by Bunraku puppets and the visual style by ukiyo-e woodblock prints). Crucially, though, its exploration of race and gender through the dark lens of anti-hero Mizu is refreshing and relatable.

Helen Garner.
Aurora Films’ Ákos Armont and Antony Waddington plan to turn Helen Garner’s novel The Spare Room, a drama about a woman who cares for her cancer-stricken friend, into a feature film.
Eamon Flack, the artistic director of Sydney’s Belvoir, will make his screen directing debut on the project.
Published in 2008, the novel follows the relationship between two women, Nicola, who has advanced bowel cancer, and her friend Helen.
When Sydney-based Nicola goes to Melbourne for the treatment she hopes will cure her, Helen becomes her nurse, protector, guardian angel and judge.
Garner’s literary agent sent the tome to Waddington in 2009 when he was raising the finance for Fred Schepisi’s The Eye of the Storm and he has wanted to turn it into a film ever since.
Last year the producers met the author and optioned the screen rights. “We are both enormously encouraged that...

In the words of artist Amy Sherald, "Producing this image keeps Breonna alive forever." The image the painter is referring to is that of Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old Emt who was fatally shot by police inside her Kentucky home in March, and the one commissioned by Vanity Fair for the monumental cover of its September issue, which is titled "The Great Fire." Revealed on Monday, Aug. 24, the issue's cover features Sherald's painting of Taylor, in which she is standing alone with one hand on her hip and donning a blue dress against a blue backdrop. As Sherald explains to Vanity Fair, the shade is inspired by aquamarine, the birthstone for March. Around her neck...

Eleven years ago, Blur/Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn teamed up with a few friends to make an album called The Good, the Bad & The Queen. It’s a lovely set of downbeat ballads about life in London, but after that lone 2007 LP, the impromptu supergroup’s members — Albarn, Clash bassist Paul Simonon, Verve guitarist Simon Tong and legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen — went their separate ways.
Now they’ve rejoined for a new album called Merrie Land, due out November 16th. Longtime David Bowie collaborator Tony Visconti produced the LP...

Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie is set to return to one of her earliest roles and bring back the character of Gwen Dawson on Downton Abbey.
Following on from Sunday's (October 4) happy episode, which saw Charles Carson and Elsie Hughes finally walk down the aisle, next week will see Gwen Dawson return to Downton a transformed woman.
Last seen in the show's first season, Gwen served as a housemaid who ultimately left the Abbey to take a job as a secretary. Little is known of her life since, although it was mentioned in season four that Gwen had recently been married.
Leslie is not the only familiar face making another appearance on Downton as Allen Leech's Tom Branson shocked the Crawley family with his own surprise return at the end of Sunday's instalment.

The evenings are getting shorter, you've already seen the first festive cards for sale at your local supermarket and The X Factor is back on Saturday nights. To borrow a phrase - winter is coming.
But don't despair, because there is much more to autumn TV in 2014 than Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell bickering over a bunch of karaoke singers. Don't believe us? Check out our list of 17 must-watch shows, which mean that you might as well cancel your plans until Christmas.
1. Glue - E4
A bloke from Rizzle Kicks, a writer from This Is England and lots of horses. It doesn't sound like an obvious hit, but Glue is most definitely worth getting excited about.
Skins crossed with Midsomer Murders and an added sinister, bleak edge, is probably the best description for this eight-parter, which will have you hooked from its full-on (and full frontal) opening sequence.

Warning: This post contains spoilers from Sunday’s Game of Thrones…
She lived by the arrow and died by the arrow: Ygritte (Rose Leslie) met her demise on Sunday’s Game of Thrones after once again being unable to bring herself to kill her former lover, Jon Snow (Kit Harington). During the Battle of Castle Black, the touched-by-fire Wildling had Jon dead in her sights, but couldn’t let that arrow fly — so she was quickly brought down by Jon’s young protegee whose family she killed in an earlier episode. Ygritte died in Jon’s arms as the battle raged around them.
