Exclusive: Shaquita Smith (Wicked City) has signed on to produce and star in the action-adventure flick Voyage of the Forgotten.

The indie feature tells the story of a young historian (Smith) who embarks on a perilous journey to uncover the long-lost adventure gallery ship, laden with gold, only to find herself entangled in a deadly game of deception and betrayal.

The film is set to shoot in the UK in the late spring of 2025. The film was written by Malcom Ali (The Changers).

Voyage of the Forgotten is a TreeHouse Productions film.

Legendary has closed a deal for Jim Mickle to write and direct a live-action adaptation of “Gundam,” co-developed between Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks, the company announced on Thursday. Mickle will also produce with his partner Linda Moran through their company Nightshade.

One of the most revered animé, “Gundam” is thought of as the Star Wars or Marvel Universe of Japan, and is the pioneer of the mecha genre of IP. The plot is currently under wraps, but the film is looking to start production in early 2025.

Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, “Gundam” is an internationally renowned franchise spanning 83 animated series and movies. Its toy and retail business are huge, with the Gundam franchise generating over $600 million annually. This will be its first live-action film.

“The Witcher” Season 4 has cast Sharlto Copley, James Purefoy, and Danny Woodburn, Variety has learned exclusively.

Copley will play the infamous bounty hunter Leo Bonhart from “The Witcher” novels. Purefoy will play Skellen, a high-ranking spy and court advisor to Emhyr who is also a prominent figure in the novels. Woodburn will play Zoltan, a fan favorite dwarf character from the novels and “Witcher” video games.

The trio join previously announced cast members Liam Hemsworth, who takes over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill, as well as Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Joey Batey, and Laurence Fishburne.

Copley is best known for his breakout role in the sci-fi film “District 9.” He has since starred in features such as “The A-Team,” “Elysium,” “Chappie,” and “Hardcore Henry.” He also stars in Dev Patel’s upcoming film “Monkey Man” and appeared in multiple episodes of the Netflix series “Russian Doll.

Shaquita Smith, known for her breakout role in AllBlk’s supernatural drama series Wicked City, has signed with The Green Room for management.

Smith starred as Jordan Davis alongside Vanessa Bell Calloway, Taylor Polidore, Mercedez McDowell, Chantal Maurice and Chanel Mack, in Wicked City, directed by Dale S. Lewis and executive produced by Tressa “Azarel” Smallwood and Donte Lee.

Smith also guest-starred in television series including New Amsterdam, NCIS: New Orleans, Hap & Leonard, Homicide Hunter and Survivor’s Remorse, among others.

She most recently was seen starring in BET+ rom-com, My Valentine Crush, directed by Christopher A. Nolen, alongside Travis Cure and Jeff Logan.

Exclusive: Actor Jimmi Simpson has taken on new representation, signing with Brian DePersia’s Cognition for management.

An Emmy and BAFTA nominee, Simpson is perhaps best known for starring roles on series like Westworld (HBO) and The Man Who Fell to Earth (Showtime), as well as roles in the acclaimed Apple TV+ drama series Pachinko, based on Min Jin Lee’s novel, and the fan-favorite Black Mirror episode “USS Callister.”

Simpson has also previously taken on sizable roles on such notable series as House of Cards, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G. and Hap and Leonard. Notable film credits for the actor, who voices the android Drednok on Paramount+’s Star Trek: Prodigy, include David Fincher’s Zodiac, Shawn Levy’s Fox comedy Date Night, the romantic dramedy Hello I Must Be Going and the Foo Fighters-led horror comedy Studio 666.

All three seasons of the acclaimed Israeli drama Shtisel, Nickelodeon sitcom Big Time Rush and Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain are among the titles leaving Netflix in March 2023.

Shtisel, which follows a Haredi family living in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem as they deal with love, loss and daily life, was a hit on Israel’s Yes network, drawing in viewers and awards locally. The series also seemed to attract an audience in the U.S. once it started streaming on Netflix. All three seasons are set to exit Netflix on March 24.

The next day, fans of the Nickelodeon sitcom Big Time Rush, which launched the band of the same name, will have to bid farewell to watching the bandmembers’ fictional antics from 2009 to 2013 on Netflix, just as the group recently reunited.

Netflix has quite a few new movies and television shows joining its ranks this March. Some of these are exclusives or originals, such as the second season of "Shadow and Bone," while others like the "Riddick" trilogy are being acquired through licensing agreements. Needless to say, if you are subscribed to Netflix, the chances that you'll find something intriguing to watch that month are high.

Of course, when new programs are added, some have to leave. Netflix is certainly no stranger to having big-name titles come and go from their service, although the vast majority of its originals have retained their place. However, March will likely be the month where that exclusivity is tested. There aren't too many titles leaving Netflix that month, but the ones that are could set the stage for how the platform filters its so-called "content" moving forward. Fremantle has promoted Christian Vesper to the newly created position of CEO of global drama. He will report to Andrea Scrosati, Group COO and CEO Continental Europe.

John Wirth has signed on as showrunner and executive producer of “Dark Winds” Season 2 at AMC.

Wirth takes over the role from Vince Calandra, who was the showrunner of the first season of the series. The show was renewed for a second season in June shortly after it debuted.

This marks Wirth’s return to AMC Networks, as he was previously the showrunner on the AMC series “Hell on Wheels” for four seasons and an executive producer on the Sundance TV series “Hap and Leonard.” His other credits include “Wu Assassins,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “Nash Bridges,” and “Picket Fences.”

Michael K. Williams, the star of HBO’s “The Wire” and “Boardwalk Empire,” was found dead Monday at his Brooklyn apartment, an official at the New York Police Department told TheWrap. The five-time Emmy nominee was 54 at the time of his death.

The NYPD is investigating his death as a possible drug overdose, the Associated Press reported, although the medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death.

According to individuals who spoke with the New York Post, a substance that appeared to be heroin was found on the kitchen table of Williams’ apartment. However, the NYPD could not confirm this information to TheWrap.

A police official told the New York Post that “no foul play” is indicated and there was “no forced entry” into Williams’ apartment.

Hulu has elevated Jordan Helman to the role of head of scripted content.

Helman has been head of drama, Hulu Originals since 2015. In his new role, he will report to Craig Erwich, president of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment. As head of scripted content, he will oversee development across drama, comedy, animation, limited series and international co-productions. A replacement for his prior role as head of drama has yet to be named. Billy Rosenberg will continue to serve as vice president of comedy development, reporting to Helman.

“Jordan has been a key member of the Hulu Originals team and vital to our aggressive push into premium original content since he joined. Netflix has revealed the first teaser-trailer for “Sweet Tooth,” an upcoming fantasy series based on the DC Comics series of the same name. Hap and Leonard was a mystery television series that followed a trio trying to find buried treasure in the Deep South. Hap and Leonard was a completely unique show that centered on two best friends, a hippie ex-cop, Hap Collins (James Purefoy), and a gay Vietnam veteran, Leonard Pine (Michael K. Williams), as they followed Hap's ex-wife Trudy (Christina Hendricks) when she told them about the treasure, but things get quickly out of hand.

Saban Films has acquired the rights to two titles from Munich-based “Resident Evil” producer Constantin Film.

The deals include North American and U.K. rights to the adventure thriller “Tides,” directed by Tim Fehlbaum, and North American rights to director Mike P. Nelson’s anticipated horror reboot, “Wrong Turn.”

Mister Smith Entertainment is handling worldwide sales on both Constantin titles this week at the virtual American Film Market, where the titles will be screening for buyers.

“Tides” marks the second film from Swiss-born director Fehlbaum, who burst to attention with his debut feature “Hell,” another sci-fi thriller.

Set in a not-too-distant future, “Tides” follows an elite female astronaut from Space Colony Kepler who is shipwrecked on a decimated Earth after a global catastrophe has wiped out nearly all of humanity. She must make a decision that will seal the fate of the Earth’s populace.

Regina King is set to executive produce a drama series currently in development at The CW, Variety has confirmed.

Titled “Slay,” the series focuses on Carson Jones. She is described as a bold, witty teenager with afro puffs, leather boots, seventies cool, and – thanks to her mother’s ancient African bloodline – supernatural gifts and the responsibility to use them to protect Virginia’s Historic Triangle (one of the most haunted areas in the country) from the forces of darkness.

Julian Johnson will write and co-executive produce, with Pam Veasey supervising and executive producing. Regina and her sister Reina King will executive produce via their production company, Royal Ties. CBS Television Studios will produce.

Regina is fresh off her Emmy win for her starring role in the HBO limited series “Watchmen.” It marked the fourth Emmy of her career, having previously won twice for “American Crime” and again for “Seven Seconds.

Christian Vesper has been promoted to president of global drama at Fremantle, the production and distribution powerhouse behind hit dramas such as Luca Guadagnino’s “We Are Who We Are,” “American Gods,” and the BBC’s “The Salisbury Poisonings.”

Vesper takes on this new role following the departure of Sarah Doole, the former London-based director of global drama, who now leads Studiocanal’s Red production company. Following Doole’s exit, Fremantle’s group chief operating officer Andrea Scrosati extended his role and took on full responsibility for global drama.

Based in London, Vesper will take on day-to-day management of the global drama team. He will report into Scrosati, who has oversight for all Fremantle’s scripted activities, both drama and film, and works in close contact with the company’s regional drama chiefs.

We here at Den of Geek were big fans of the Hap and Leonard TV series, sadly canceled by Sundance in 2018 after three glorious seasons. But the world and its characters live on in the book series that started it all. Joe R. Lansdale’s story of two martial arts-wielding detectives who strike up an unlikely best friendship as they work as private investigators n 1980s East Texas is filled with some good crime plotting and some interesting things to say about America, with two fascinating characters at its center. It’s hard out there for a human-animal hybrid. Or at least that’s what we’ll likely discover with Netflix’s latest family-friendly offering. Netflix has commissioned Sweet Tooth, a series about a part deer, part boy based on characters from Vertigo/DC.

Sweet Tooth will feature eight one-hour episodes and Netflix describes the setting as a “post-apocalyptic paradise.” The full logline for the series reads: “Sweet Tooth is the broad appeal, family-friendly, storybook adventure of Gus — part deer, part boy — who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.”

After getting a pilot production order at Hulu in late 2018, the adaptation of DC Vertigo comic “Sweet Tooth” is no longer moving forward at the Disney-owned streaming platform. But Netflix has picked up the one-hour drama from Team Downey, the production company founded by Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey, in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Starring Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar and Will Forte, “Sweet Tooth” is a coming-of-age tale of Gus, a part boy, part deer who leaves home amid a cataclysmic world event, then joins “a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.” James Brolin has been cast as the voice of the narrator.

Netflix describes the series as a “broad appeal, family-friendly, storybook adventure.” The series is based on characters created for DC by Jeff Lemire.

To some, cord-cutting means avoiding cable subscriptions and taking in entertainment strictly through VOD streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. To others, it means eschewing paying for any entertainment services all together. Netflix? Disney? Amazon? Comcast? They’re all the man, man. Well, that latter group just received a powerful tool in its war against paying for things.

AMC has cut a deal with ViacomCBS to bring early seasons of many of their shows to the free streaming service Pluto TV, according to Variety. Under the deal, The Walking Dead’s first five seasons will be available to stream on the Pluto TV platform.

The Walking Dead has pretty much always been available to stream online. Those with cable subscriptions are able to stream the latest season of The Walking Dead on AMC.com. Those with Netflix subscriptions have been able to stream seasons 1 through 9. Those without either have been out of luck…...

Pluto TV, the ad-supported streaming service owned by ViacomCBS, has added four new channels derived from AMC Networks programming, including The Walking Dead en Español.

Effective Friday, the 22-million-plus active viewers of Pluto will get access to the Spanish-language Twd offering, which features early seasons of the original series as well as spinoff Fear the Walking Dead. Also on tap are Stories By AMC (including past seasons of Twd), Slightly Off By IFC and All Reality We TV. Select programming from the four will also be made available on demand via Pluto.

Pluto’s approach to streaming has been to present viewers with an experience resembling the traditional television one, with live feeds, a programming grid and a large menu of channels. With an editorial team, it creates curated versions of programming available elsewhere, enabling it to largely steer clear of friction with pay-tv operators paying companies like ViacomCBS to carry linear networks.

The walkers are about to descend on Pluto TV — but they’re going to be even moldier than usual.

AMC Networks inked a licensing deal with ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV free-to-watch streaming platform, under which Pluto TV is launching a suite of four dedicated channels on Friday, May 1, stocked with library content including past seasons of “The Walking Dead.”

That will include a range of the cabler’s programming, including AMC’s hit show “The Walking Dead” (seasons 1-5) and later “Fear the Walking Dead” (seasons 1-3); the full series runs of “Halt and Catch Fire,” and “Into the Badlands”; IFC’s “Portlandia,” “Documentary Now!” and “Brockmire”; and We tv’s “Kendra on Top” and “Mary Mary.” Select programming will also be available on demand on Pluto TV.

For AMC Networks, the pact — making Pluto TV the exclusive free, ad-supporting streaming partner for its programming — is another way for it to monetize library content.

Sylvester Stallone is mourning the loss of his First Blood costar Brian Dennehy.

The actor, 73, shared a photo of himself and Dennehy in the 1982 film on his Instagram account on Thursday, writing, “The great actor Brian Dennehy has passed away.”

“He simply was A brilliant performer … He also was a Vietnam vet that helped me very much building the character of Rambo The world has lost a great artist. #First Blood,” Stallone wrote.
