The line between miracles and madness is a thin one in the first trailer for Netflix's new geopolitical thriller. Led by Pixels actress Michelle Monaghan, Messiah follows CIA agent Eva Geller as she encounters a mysterious figure (Mehdi Dehbi) who quickly gains global attention for his "miracles." While his cult-like followers see his godly actions as the work of a higher figure, Geller sees them as acts of public disruption and discovers that this Messiah may really be a sinister con artist with plans to dismantle the global balance of power.
But Geller is up against more than the Messiah's zen-like presence, razor-sharp cheekbones, and flowing locks; the mysterious stranger quickly converts people to his cause with several incredible acts, including allegedly saving a young woman (Stefania Lavie Owen) from a violent tornado. As Geller searches for the truth behind the stranger's intentions, the tangled web of lies and...

The most uneven of David Cronenberg’s early commercial horror features, the 1977 “Rabid,” was nonetheless probably the biggest success among them, in large part due to the novelty value of seeing “Behind the Green Door” porn superstar and erstwhile Ivory Snow detergent-box model Marilyn Chambers in a lurid mainstream vehicle. It’s also the one ripest for remake, if only because his just-prior “Shivers” aka “They Came from Within” and ensuing “The Brood” should be left alone — largely reviled upon release, they’re now rightly considered genre classics. Lacking their outrageous ideas and cumulative narrative momentum despite some striking elements, “Rabid” nonetheless has a strong-enough basic concept to warrant revisiting.
In theory, “twisted twins” Jen and Sylvia Soska are fair candidates for that job: Like Cronenberg, they’re Canadian, attracted to body-horror, and have cut their own path from micro-budget projects toward the mainstream. They also claim they dislike remakes as a rule,...

Canada’s horror auteur twins, the Soska Sisters, remade their idol David Cronenberg’s earliest and grisliest film.
Canadian filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska have been delivering artistic haymakers since they started their careers. It was back then that they self-financed, wrote, directed and starred in the the delicately titled Dead Hooker in a Trunk. Since then, they’ve also created their best and most acclaimed movie to date, American Mary (2012), while also directing a segment for The ABCs of Death 2 (2014), and two movies for WWE Films, the slasher sequel See No Evil 2 (2014) and the action thriller Vendetta (2015).
Their movies are marked by a decidedly feminist point-of-view as well as a gleeful, often outrageous use of gore and visceral horror, so it’s no surprise that they have now taken on the risk of remaking Rabid, one of the early films by their idol and fellow Canadian,...

With Lucy in the Sky out next week, we rate the actor’s greatest roles from V for Vendetta to Annihilation
Terrence Malick films are never entirely without value, but this comes pretty close: a tiresomely self-indulgent and male-gazey homage to La life, tricked out with Malick’s late-phase tics that only restate the obtuseness of it all. From the poster and publicity material, you would think that Portman plays a key part here, but no: she’s one of the gallery of women with whom a writer, Christian Bale, attempts to find meaning in his life. Portman does quite a bit of moody frisking, from art gallery to hotel room to beach, but there’s not much to it.

British actor Danny Dyer has claimed that he wasn’t really “acknowledged” for his acting until starring in BBC primetime soap EastEnders.
The star of gritty British dramas such as The Football Factory and Vendetta highlighted the “snobbery” around UK soaps, which remain some of the highest rated scripted series on British television.
Dyer joined the BBC One series, which is based around a community in East London, in 2013. He has since picked up National Television Awards and TV Choice Awards for his role as pub landlord Mick Carter. Speaking on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show, he said, “It’s mad because towards soap there is a bit of snobbery and I think I was part of that mob when I was making films, you think you’re cool and cult. I never really got acknowledged for being an actor until I went into a soap.”

Rabid, the classic film from horror auteur director David Cronenberg, has been remade by filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska.
Rabid may be a campy, schlocky classic from the dawning era of the horror Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s, but the film, a breakthrough offering from director David Cronenberg – who would move on to genre masterpieces like 1981’s Scanners, 1983 cult classic Videodrome, 1983 Stephen King adaptation The Dead Zone and 1986’s The Fly – maintains a fanbase, notably siblings Jen and Sylvia Soska, who have remade the movie.
Laura Vandervoort stars in the horror remake as Rose, a young woman whose mutilated looks become miraculously restored… albeit with carnivorous consequences.

Legendary adult-oriented DC imprint, Vertigo Comics, will close down by January 2020.
The iconic comics imprint that brought readers The Sandman, Preacher, Hellblazer, Fables, Y: The Last Man, and others will close its doors in 2020. According to THR, DC Comics plans to shutter Vertigo Comics, as well as young adult imprints DC Zoom and DC Ink, starting in January.
Replacing them will be three, age-specific imprints: DC Kids for ages 8-12, DC for 13 and up, and the adult-oriented DC Black Label for readers 17 and older. Series currently running under DC Zoom, Ink, and Vertigo will be integrated into these new imprints. This means that series like Sandman Universe, which expands the world of the Vertigo's most famous character, may live on under Black Label. Since making it onto the silver screen in “Leon: The Professional,” Natalie Portman has continued to impress and succeed under the spotlight, and then some with directing and producer creds. Before “Vox Lux” hits theaters soon, let’s reflect on the actress’s iconic career trajectory.
Leon (1994)
The Israel-born model turned actress first broke onto the film scene at 13 as the Mathilda in “Leon: The Professional.” Delivering a strong performance as a vengeful apprentice for Jean Reno’s skilled Leon, Portman snagged her first major acting credit – and an impressive one at that.
Beautiful Girls (1996)
Portman showcased her ability to work alongside Hollywood bigwigs like Matt Dillon, Rosie O’Donnell and Uma Thurman. As the smart-talking, teenage Marty, Portman charmed people both on and off screen. This was one of the last roles Portman took on before venturing exploring the Broadway stage as the titular character in “The Diary of Anne Frank.

Brenton Thwaites is the new Dick Grayson. And we’re not talking about Chris McKay’s gestating Nightwing movie.
Instead, Thwaites, a graduate of Disney’s Pirates franchise, has signed on to headline Titans, Warner’s live-action TV series that promises a gritty new take on the timeless DC classic.
Flanked by the hot-headed Starfire and Beast Boy, we’ve already caught a glimpse of Brenton Thwaites in full costume, though it seems Thursday’s big reveal mined inspiration from none other than The Dark Knight Rises. The side-by-side comparison included below shows Titans‘ first-look photo next to the theatrical poster for Christopher Nolan’s trilogy-capper.

V for Vendetta isn’t just an overlooked gem – it’s one of the best comic book films ever made. It’s also a film that continues to resonate within subsequent socio-political climates, especially right now when political tensions have been as furiously divisive as they’ve ever been.
Thematically, Alan Moore’s graphic novel is all about personal liberation and anarchy; disobeying authority and following your own path, the need for chaos to find unity and peace. The film (adapted from a screenplay by the Wachowskis) doesn’t quite capture this, though it does possess its own air of anti-authoritative rebellion.
While the movie’s themes don’t fully correspond with Moore’s philosophy – to him V was a symbol, not a leader, whereas in the film he has a more personal agenda – it still does provide some food for thought, while never coming at the expense of good old fashioned action adventure.

In his new feature film Breaking In, director James McTeigue offers a predictable, yet hugely watchable home-invasion thriller, which is likely to owe most of its box-office success to the brilliance of its female lead. Staring Gabrielle Union as a determined and mightily pissed-off mother of two, the film tells the story of a family caught up in a robbery gone wrong, resulting in a showdown between a gang of murderous criminals and a mother who will stop at nothing to protect her family.
Shaun Russell (Gabrielle Union) is still reeling from the violent death of her rich estranged father, a man she had disowned many years prior to his untimely death due to his less than orthodox dealings with the law. Arriving at the family home accompanied by her teenage daughter Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) and young son Glover (Seth Carr), Shaun soon discovers that her father had made his...

After Wonder Woman, the most famous super-powered woman in America is the mythical mother who can lift a car to save her child. I’ve always wondered where’s the movie about her, that remarkable everymom who’s as strong as Clark Kent and as regimented as Bruce Wayne.
There’s no barehanded raising of vehicles in “Breaking In,” but this home-invasion thriller from director James McTeigue’s (“V is for Vendetta”) more than fills that gap. Starring Gabrielle Union, “Breaking In” is a Mother’s Day movie for the family that already saw “A Quiet Place” together. It feels just as calculated, in fact, as those Garry Marshall-directed holiday-themed ensemble films that no one liked, but everyone saw. But the film’s undisguised mom-power cheerleading is so scarce in mainstream entertainment that it’s difficult to mind.
What does miff about “Breaking In,” though, is how the film’s commercial aspirations seem to get in the way of character and thematic development. Save for a couple of early scenes, Union’s Shaun Russell is largely shorn of history and personality; even the shirt she wears for the entire movie is a plain white tee.

Shaun attempts to protect her kids from robbers in the house she grew up in after the sudden death of her estranged, seemingly abusive father (Damien Leake). But the screenplay by Ryan Engle (“Rampage,” “The Commuter”) squanders its potential for emotional depth, making “Breaking In” a serviceable, but indistinct product.
Displaying little grief after her father’s hit-and-run murder, Shaun brings her children — adolescent daughter Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus, “13 Reasons Why”) and pre-teen son Glover (Seth Carr, “Bosch”) — to the sprawling estate where she grew up, and on which they’d never set foot until now, to clear out the house for sale. Unbeknownst to the trio, four million dollars sits in a safe inside the house, money that a quartet of thieves (Billy Burke, Richard Cabral, Levi Meaden, and Mark Furze) have come to snatch.

The manse is neither drool-worthy nor particularly convincing: immaculate counters and a lack of personal touches, save for a few family photos, make it pretty obvious that the set designer was on a strict budget. That’s fine, except that the too-clean interiors add to the sense of the characters being deliberately buffed out, or never given many details in the first place. Either way, there’s a defensiveness in the film’s less-is-more ethos, as if to make Shaun and her family as unobjectionable as possible — a decision that deprives the storyline of more layered stakes.
While one of the burglars wrestles with Shaun outside, the others kidnap Jasmine and Glover and sequester them in a room. Shaun’s attempts to get back inside of this intensively surveilled building to rescue her children keep shifting the calculus of the criminals’ end game: How many Russell children would it be best to keep alive? The twists and turns are plentiful and effective, but mostly humdrum movie material. Only an early scene, in which Shaun stabs one of the intruders with a broken piece of the wine glass she was sipping from just moments earlier, stands out as an ingenious bit of genre play.

In the midst of all the unease, Union shares a surprisingly moving scene with Alexus, in which the mother, planning a bold gambit, encourages her daughter to go along with the new plan in a speech that doubles as a possible goodbye. Union doesn’t get to exert too much of herself in this role, except physically. But she’s such a genial presence that it’s fun watching her embrace Shaun’s calm relentlessness, as well as her maternal warmth.
Moms can do it all, “Breaking In” proclaims. So why does it give Union only so much to do?

2016 is hereby declared the year of the female filmmaker.
A few exceptions aside, for several years, a spot in the director’s chair seemed like a seat reserved only for those in the boys’ club. However, a revolution has been quietly brimming beneath the surface, with more and more women stepping behind the camera as of late and genre films leading the way in this massive reconstruction. Game changers like Jennifer Kent, Marjane Satrapi and Veronika Franz have been stepping up and proving themselves as not only worthy contenders when it comes to noteworthy women who make movies, but equally as skilled as any male photographer.
While there are many exciting projects on the horizon to be helmed by talented ladies, this list is dedicated to a few of the most striking pictures that are set to release soon. Read on to learn about these thrilling new prospects, and find...

Whether it's the Fifth of November or not, one can consider how V for Vendetta's dystopian future is closer than ever.
Remember, remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder, treason, and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.
These are the words that have accompanied hundreds of Guy Fawkes Day celebrations ever since that eponymous Catholic failed to blow up Parliament in 1605. But for many millions the world over, the poem is now synonymous with V for Vendetta, a shockingly subversive studio movie that was released in 2006. More than a decade later that film’s success at celebrating radical political ideas can still be felt by the fact that a movie which glorifies terrorist action (blowing up Parliament and Big Ben) is considered a classic in many circles, and is routinely viewed at the beginning of every November by movie fans the world over.

Emotionally relating to, and understanding, the psychotic motivations of manic characters who are purely driven by their feelings of grief and despair can be a harrowing process for many people. But when a film’s story can grippingly and naturally draw out those agonizing emotions, largely in part of the eerie environment of its intensely disturbing main shooting location, the actors can enthrallingly and instinctively showcase those hysterical inspirations. One such entrancing movie that powerfully utilizes its frightening location to its advantage is the action drama ‘Vendetta,’ the latest joint directing effort from twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska. In honor of the film’s home release on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital [ Read More ]

While following a criminal’s journey through the judicial system as they stand trial for their alleged crimes is the legal way for their victims to avenge the wrongs that have been committed against them, taking authority into their own hands is at times the only way the people who have suffered feel as though they can vindicate the offense. Such is the case with Dean Cain’s character, Chicago Detective Mason Danvers, in the action drama, ‘Vendetta.’ The film, which Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD on Tuesday, August 18, follows the investigator as he seeks his own personal vengeance on the man who killed his [ Read More ]

When I first heard about Jen and Sylvia Soska (re: Soska Twins/The Soskas), I admit I had never seen their work. I had zero idea about who they were, or how they had come to Indie Horror prominence, yet once I started hearing their names, it became almost a daily occurrence.
Something about this concerned me, though, because the first thing I heard about them was, “Have you seen 'American Mary'? They're awesome for female Directors! Their stuff can lean a bit extreme feminist at times, but, they're not bad, at all!” – and that didn't quite sit well, with me. Jen and Sylvia Soska (American Mary) have been busy of late. They have See No Evil 2 coming out later this year, they have wrapped shooting on another film, Vendetta, and now comes word that they have just signed on for their next project.
The twins will be taking on Painkiller Jane, a comic book character created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Joe Quesada in the 1990s.
In the comics, Jane Vasko, is a cop who, along with with her best friend and partner, goes undercover into an interconnected drug ring. When her identity is exposed, Jane is tortured, which leaves her with preternatural regenerating abilities and a high tolerance for pain.
If the name sounds familiar it may be because Jane has been adapted twice before for television. The SyFy channel aired a made-for-tv movie in 2005 with Emmanuelle Vaugier as the heroine. That was followed in 2007 with a series starring...

The Big Show is currently on a break from WWE programming to film a new WWE Films project called Vendetta according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The filming began last week with Jen and Sylvia Soska directing it. They also directed See No Evil 2 starring Kane that will be out later this year.
The story for Vendetta revolves around a detective (played by Big Show) who deliberately commits a crime in order to wind up in prison and enact revenge on the man who murdered his wife. Show previously starred in the WWE film Knucklehead and also had minor roles in Jingle All The Way, The Waterboy and MacGruber. While no return date has been given, WWE’s film projects usually take about six weeks to film. Sometimes it’s more than that, but that’s typical of how long the films take.
