But he was forced to drop out due to filming Sam Mendes‘ Beatles anthology.

While Twilight was the biggest success, countless other series were met with lukewarm receptions yet still delivered multiple sequels. It has been several years since The Maze Runner, Percy Jackson, and Divergent stopped adding to their intellectual property while countless others failed to get past an initial entry. Based on the 2005 novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies is Netflix’s belated attempt to attract the YA audience with what is intended to be the first in a potential quadrilogy.

Do you, by chance, remember when director McG made good movies? Yeah, I know, me neither. And his latest, Uglies, won’t disprove that point. It is hard to believe that the man who cut his teeth directing Sugar Ray music videos has successfully made movies for nearly a quarter of a century.

Yes, cinema is a visual medium, but McG has always focused more on aesthetics. From the Charlie’s Angels franchise to family fare like Rim of the World and Family Switch, he emphasizes vain visuals instead of character depth and a good story.

McG may have finally found a film that tackles those sensibilities with Netflix’s latest Joey King vehicle. Uglies is a grossly digitally enhanced, special effects-driven, inefficacious streaming film whose themes are so wide of the mark that it practically becomes conceited.

Netflix's Uglies tackles important concepts in a dystopian future and utilizes an excellent cast of actors to do so. The movie, based on the popular YA book series by Scott Westerfeld, was a long time coming, with announcements of a film adaptation first announced way back in 2006. Unfortunately, something always seemed to fall throughuntil actor Joey King went to bat to make this project happen. Now, Uglies is finally a reality on Netflix, with star King joined by talented castmates like Chase Stokes, Keith Powers, Brianne Tju, and more.

Uglies follows Tally Youngblood, a teen who lives in a world nearly destroyed by humanity's dependence on fossil fuels. When Earth's cities were rebuilt, it was determined that every citizen would undergo a procedure on their 16th birthday that would make them flawlessly beautiful. Lovely and happy, these people never caused problems, demonstrated greed, or started wars and, therefore, lived in paradise.

Following last week's abbreviation thanks to the Labor Day holiday weekend, it's the first full week of September, and Netflix isn't messing around. Exclusive: The latest original from African streamer Showmax, sci-fi drama The Fix, will open Mip Africa.

This marks the third year in a row a Showmax original has opened the event, which is an offshoot of MIPCOM. Last year, Canal+ co-production Spinners took the slot. Mip Africa is part of Fame Week Africa, a Reed Exhibitions initiative focused on African creativity.
