Bronco Bullfrog (1970)
You can see Skinheads portrayed without prejudice
It´s a social realistic film. We follow some kids in the late teens, some in school and some at work. There is not really a story or the story isn't that important. Boy meets girl meets no acceptance from home so they run away. They team up with Bronco Bullfrog who has escaped from borstal. The best thing about the film is that we can follow normal working class kids in East End in London during the era of the Skinheads. So we get a non political view from skinheads, even if you may call them Suedeheads or whatever subcategory you like. There is no actors in the film, everybody is handpicked from the streets. The "bad" acting helps the real feeling. But you could always asked more from the director regarding the tightness of the film. I rated it 7 of 10.
Lågor i dunklet (1942)
Not as thrilling as "Hets", but thrilling anyway
Hasse Ekman was only 27 when he made this thrilling drama, and it is a good work for a man that age. You will recognize Stig Järrels Character if you have watched "Hets" but he´s not all the same as in his later roll. The film takes part on a boarding school and its interesting just to see how things were in the 40:s. The drama starts when Stig Järrels Characters mother dies and he starts in a new school were nobody knew what secrets he bares, and I can't tell you what it is, can I. But I can tell you that the actors are very good (maybe Ekman shouldn't direct himself) and the film i really thrilling and intense. It is not as good as "Hets", not many films are but you will have to compare them. I gave "Hets" 10 points and this 8.
Den osynliga muren (1944)
A strong film of a heroine trying to save jews from nazis
This is absolutely not Schindler's list (meaning this is good). In a occupied nameless country a girl becomes indirectly involved in a terror attack. She try to help jews to escape from the land witch is soon to be very hot. She is also involved with a nazi that she had met before the war, but this story about her inner conflict is not that interesting but takes a lot of time. The girl performed by Inga Tidblad is excellent and so is also her working partner Stig Järrel. The story is based on a book "attentat i Paris" by Marika Steirnstedt.
Det sociala arvet (1993)
See the whole triology
This movie is the third in a triology by Stefan Jarl, often called the Mods-triology. That title could be misunderstood because the films doesn't follow mods just swedish teenage drugrebels in the 60's. This last film summons Jarls work and shows that he has been developing himself as an documentary filmer. Jarl is often in picture and he tells us that the filming of this three films has been complicated even in moral ways. It starts with an answer machine message from late "Stoffes" widow, telling Jarl she hate him and that there will not be a third movie. Later in the film we can see when Jarl is about to meet "Stoffes" child. I will not tell you if he does. Det Sociala Arvet follows "Stoffes" best friend "Kenta" (the two of them are the main characters in the first film) and how he tries to knock of the booze and moving to a little village in nowhere called Hallabro. We can also hear the people from the earlier films make comments on what they said then, the first film is from the 60's the second from the 70's. If you see the whole triology you will be aware that you have seen the best documentary ever made about social underclass.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Do not analyze it, love it
This is a very amusing movie with all the Tim Burton accessories. Do not take this film down bit by bit because it would not do it any good. A young scientific policeman who think that torture is out of style and that you must have a trail before sending someone off to jail, it IS going to be a new century (it is 1799). So the NYPD sends the troublemaker to sleepy hollow where he have to think in a new way because ghosts do exist. Burton has captured the bedtime story feeling you got in edward scissorhand, but he turn it in to more gore and more action. I think it is definitely worth a look.
American Beauty (1999)
It does not deserve all the roses
The sad thing with "American Beauty" is that it is not as good as they say (according to my opinion of course). I was not impressed by the acting, definitely not impressed by the script, and I could tell what was going to happen in the next scene. So don´t sit and wait for a surprise. It is about a man of the family who wants to revolt a la Michael Douglas in "Falling Down", but he does not use violence he use hash and hippie music, blackmailing his boss and making a pass on a 15 year old girl, TRAGIC. Well thats the point of the movie, some might say now. Well if it is I think It is a really bad movie. Due to what I have said I think it is worth seeing, if you don´t have anything to do and you don´t waist any money on it. I voted 4 on IMDb because the film have good photo and good solutions to scenes, and I have seen worse. The point I wan´t to make is that it so totally overestimated
Kenny Starfighter (1997)
I think its very Swedish
Maybe i am wrong but I think this is typical for the Swedes. Since i am from Sweden I think it's hilarious, you shall have in mind that it is for children (even adult children). The mini is about this opposite to Blixt Gordon a total loser, a galactic anti-hero. He gets an impossible mission on earth where he gets help from some kids who belives he is super..or?
Lust (1994)
Sara!? Sara!? can you fail more than this
What a total disaster, it does not help that some of the actors are really good in other movies. That only proves what difference it makes if a director is good or bad, this one is definitely bad. The plot is simple, the notorious girl-hunter falls for an extra ordinary(read psycho) girl. He becomes the victim instead of the hunter, and the rest is so predictable. You can't ignore all the misses how much you try 'cause they are so obvious, like the ringing unplugged telephone. This film is based on a book, but I can't imagine that the script is very faithful to it. Still if you like films like plan 9 from outer space, i'm sure you will enjoy this one.
Vacas (1992)
one of the best introductions for"narrow"non-American movies
The first scene in this film is outstanding, it makes you hold your breath and keep doing that until the end of the movie, but you can never put your finger on why it is like that. The actors are really great and Medems directions are superb. If you have got any friends you like to introduce "narrow" non-American movies for, I think this is the best movie to start with. Unfortunately it is not as effective on video as on the big screen, but it is still worth a look.
Romper Stomper (1992)
Always the same, skinheads=nazis, don't see it
A big WARNING because i might spoil the end of the movie, so if you haven't seen this movie, and will, do not read this. First of all: for all you skins, and others who like movies about skins, here is yet another one where skins are nazis, racist and more or less dumb. Tragic and stereotype, all listening to white power music. If you want to see aggro, see something else. And for the second (the warning-thing): I don't think you can take a film seriously when it is about racism and it winds up with one good person, with swastika tattooed on his arm, fighting a bad person, also with swastika tattooed on his arm, over a girl on a beach. I can not recommend this film too anyone except for casting agents, 'cause some actors are great.
