Hardcore (1979)
Local Insight
Dutch Calvinist father searches for daughter who's off on a lark in the California world of hardcore films. Insights: This film begins in the northwest side of Grand Rapids, Michigan, in the neighborhood where Paul Shrader and I grew up. It opens with scenes of the hill where we snow-slid; and the kids leave from the Broadway CRC church we both attended. All Grand Rapids folks would find the intro interesting. As if on a foreign planet, George C. Scott must learn to function in the California porn world looking for his daughter - but he is resourceful and has an insider's help. The films end was filmed around Broadway in San Francisco where I happened to work in 1978 as a banker - an interesting coincidence.
Roadracers (1959)
Classic sports car racing - great visuals.
I just caught the last 15 minutes of this obscure "drive in" era film on AMC on March 17th. I am interested in auto racing films and never even heard of this one. It seemed to have a basic plot and acting, but the racing scene at the end was truly wonderful. It included the classic era cars like Scarabs and '58 Vettes in a well filmed race. Black and White but AMC had a clear print. I must see it again and buy it if ever released.
