This film will put a constant smile on your face! If not more! "Neighborhood House" was planned as the first Charley Chase feature lenght film. But for some reason, Hal Roach was not satisfied with it - he made Chase cut it down to twenty minutes so it could pass as a short. It works remarkably well! There are some unmotivated fade-outs and a somewhat abrupt ending, but apart from this it is one of Chases best attempts! Charley and his family are attending a "Bank night" at the local cinema. They give away 500 Dollars that night - and Charley number is drawn. But because it was drawn by his little daughter, the audience runs mad. He finally has to return the prize - this time its his daughters number which is drawn... There are so many hilarious, admirably well executed gags in this short you want to watch it over and over again! One of the best comedy shorts ever!
"Public Ghost No.1" is one of the few week shorts made by Charley Chase which give a false impression of the great, forgotten comedians art. Its too complicated at the beginning and too predictable in the second half. In a good Chase short you never knew what comes next - not in this one.
When I see a Charley Chase film I always wonder why on earth this great comedian is forgotten today. His natural sense of timing was perfect; and he never needed to make a big fuss around a funny situation - it just came naturally. Maybe that's the reason that most people can't understand his films nowadays- they are too subtle for a today audience which is used to a noisy, clumsy comedy stile.
"Movie Night" is one of the best silent shorts I know. I don't know many other films Mr Chase appeared in - but ALL of those those few I know are among the best comedies ever made.
It is time to rediscover this gentle and subtle comedian!
