It's hard to believe a movie can be this bad, but you live and learn. What's more amazing is the fact that the people who put this thing together likely had college educations. Meanwhile, the fruit of their labor bares the appearance of something a group of five eighth graders may have come up with. On the bright side, (if there is one) the soundtrack has some nice moments, which is another reason to question how the rest of the film can be so hideously bad.
Max Fisher is one of the most original characters I have seen in recent film. In the tradition of Dignan in "Bottle Rocket," Max is an ambitious person, whose reach is far greater than his grasp. Both of these movies are among my favorites and I look forward to many more from Wes Anderson and his co-writer Owen Wilson.
I really don't like the marketing of this movie. The tagline and the doesn't really tell you what's going on. 'Flirting With Disaster' was a comedy, and this is a drama. A tragedy more accurately. The movie has its laughs, but it's the anything but humorous incestuous events, that are the the core of this story. I think David O. Russell is a very gifted filmmaker and here he presents a very unreal subject in a very believable and compelling way. But if you are looking for a comedy, see "Flirting With Disaster.'
