  • Tries hard to rise above the poem

Any story comprises a premise, characters and conflict. Characters plotting their own play promises triumph, and a militant character readily lends oneself to this. Ardh Satya's premise is summarized by the poem of the same name scripted by Dilip Chitre. The line goes - "ek palde mein napunsaktha, doosre palde mein paurush, aur teek tarazu ke kaante par, ardh satya ?". A rough translation - "The delicate balance of right & wrong ( commonly seen on the busts of blind justice in the courts ) has powerlessness on one plate and prowess on another. Is the needle on the center a half-truth ? "

The poem is recited midway in the film by Smita Patil to Om Puri at a resturant. It makes a deep impact on the protagonist & lays the foundation for much of the later events that follow. At the end of the film, Om Puri ends up in exactly the same situation described so aptly in the poem.

The film tries mighty hard to do a one-up on the poem. However, Chitre's words are too powerful, and at best, the film matches up to the poem in every aspect.

  • For 10-13 year olds ( New York Times )

New York Times recently compiled a list of R-rated flicks that might actually be OK for kids. The Mexican was categorized as suitable for 10-13 year olds. I'm 28. No wonder I didn't get it. An insanely stupid flick.

  • Bloody Masterpiece!

No doubt, Crouching Tiger is a milestone in film making. A watershed event. Sheer poetry in motion. At certain points in the movie, words simply failed me. The plot works on several levels. At a very superficial glance, it may be a simple folklore Kung Fu in the backdrop of love. Go deeper & you're in for a treat. The reactions it evoked in the audience & myself left me stunned. Some were open-mouthed, shell-struck. Some like me, wept openly! It was just too much for some - there were dazed, reflective viewers all around, figuring out what hit them!! Then there were the fringe group who simply didn't get it - they thought it was a female Jackie Chan action flick :( Crouching Tiger has already been nominated for the Oscars, & will hopefully pick up its fair share. In my opinion, this flick deserves every single award it can lay claim to. Its simply an awesome visual treat!
