Greatest Events of WWII in Colour (2019)
Bravo Sierra
Interesting that the story of the Battle of the Bulge involves 2 US Historians, 2 British Historians, 2 German Historians, and a British author. By the way, will somebody please throat punch James Holland???? He is absolutely the worst commentator of these documentaries. I can think of several who would be better: John McManus, Alex Kershaw to name a couple. And at one point, Max Hastings refers to Gen. Patton as "Georgie Patton". For Christ sakes, George Patton did more to win the war than Montgomery ever did, have a little respect. Yes, he was tough, yes he was bluster, but he got the job done when Montgomery was bogged down with his failed plan "Market Garden". If Patton would have had the gas for his operation instead of Montgomery, there would not have been a Battle of the Bulge, because the German lines would have been on the western edge of Berlin.
3-2-1 Penguins: Moon Menace on Planet Tell-A-Lie (2003)
Excellent Video
As with the Veggie Tales Videos, 3-2-1 Penguins! Is based on Christian Themes. What sets this video series apart is the humorous references and jokes in this series. Jason and Michelle are left at Grandmother's house while Mom and Dad take a small vacation. Bored beyond belief, Jason and Michelle discover the attic and some interesting souvenirs. Among them are 4 penguin figurines that Grandfather gave Grandmother on their honeymoon trip to the Falkland Islands. Jason also discovers a toy spaceship and the Penguins become it's crew. Imagination takes over and many adventures follow. Funny references to Star Trek, Science Fiction and popular culture while being educational for the kids.
Band of Brothers (2001)
Simply the finest tribute to brave soldiers
I read the Stephen Ambrose book roughly 2 years before the mini-series came out. I kept my HBO Subscription just to see this series. The series faithfully stays to the way Dr. Ambrose presented the recollections of E Company men. In this series you see everything. Training, combat, comradeship. It is hard to keep dry eyes watching events unfold: The relentless shelling in the Bois Jacques during the Battle of the Bulge, the chill of hearing anti-aircraft fire hitting the airplanes during the drop into Normandy, hearing the real veterans at the beginning of each episode. You cannot come away from this not feeling attached to these men. I cannot praise this film enough.
The Razor's Edge (1984)
Hacks!!!
Don't listen to anyone who bashes this film. It is wonderful. I welcome this dramatic role for clown Bill Murray. I saw it the first time when it first came out on video, not knowing what to expect except that it was a drama. I thought the film was fantastic. Murray goes off on a search for himself and the truth, while his friends change and endure their indulgences. A lot to be admired about this film. Not everyone's cup of tea probably, but certainly not the snore fest that others would paint it to be.
61* (2001)
Best Baseball movie in a long time
I have to say that the first time I saw Barry Pepper in Saving Private Ryan, I thought he would be a great Roger Maris. The same haunting eyes. That said, Billy Crystal deserves many thanks for bringing perhaps the most under-reported hero story of all time to the screen. Maris deserved more than the fans gave him, Mantle was portrayed in as good a light as his biggest fan could have and been historically accurate. There are those that argue that Maris couldn't have reached 61 if he had been in any other place in the batting order than before Mantle, and they may be right. But the story here isn't just the record, but how the press picks their golden boy for a season, and will trample anyone who stands in the way of it. By the media's standard, Mantle should have broken the record, and Maris was trampled and misquoted by the media as often as possible. I don't know if Maris deserves to be in the Hall of Fame, but I do know that the press needs to see this movie not as an account of the home run race, but rather as an indictment of how they behave, acting as king-makers instead of reporters of what happens. Billy Crystal, thank you for telling this story.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
What is all the hype about?
I kept hoping that this movie would get better. I was sorely disappointed when it reached the end and never got to be the movie that everyone thought it was. Cheesy dialog, faky fear, Heather deserved to die, especially after going into the house. What, these kids had a DAT, 3 or 4 cameras and not one of them had a GPS? Come on. I heard reports of people being afraid to walk to their cars after this movie. I was so very disappointed.
Cooperstown (1993)
Fine baseball film
This film was made by TBS and has been shown rarely after its initial blitz on that network. I found it to be a very good movie about baseball, regret, and bigotry that was present in the early days of baseball. A touching tribute to the boys of summer.
