It's a simple idea, get some actors together and improvise a film. Get them to use their real names, give them basic outlines of what to do and involve a camera crew in the story line and you've got yourself covered.
Does it work? Hell yes. This is something else. The acting is simply stunning all round, but Ray Winstone does stand out - when doesn't he?
A very simple story, Jude has been secretly videotaping his friends and at his funeral they get to see themselves on TV. Their reactions complete Jude's final film.
The interaction of the characters is very well played. It's believable, sad, funny, intense and fascinating.
I can't recommend this film any higher, except that there's a lot of swearing - it's supposed to have the highest amount of swearwords submitted to the BBFC - mainly courtesy of Mr Winstone in one very memorable scene (some of the couplings I've never heard before, yet they seem so natural streaming from Ray Winstone's mouth)

Mike Leigh certainly has avoided his usual film making style with this costume drama. Visually stunning and incredibly well acted, this biopic of Gilbert and Sullivan is very well made. It's problem is that it pushes 3 hours in length and is too self indulgent.
Self indulgent? - well Mike Leigh is obviously a big fan of Gilbert and Sullivan and gives us many tunes - most in their entirety. My problem, and many of the people I saw the film with, is that I'm not so much a fan, and all this music got in the way. You get the idea of how a musical number's staged very easily due to the quality of the film making, but to see the entire number (and many more) gets too much. To see almost all of the Mikado when you go to see a film is just too much.
The story can seem bitty as we get to see many characters living their lives, the actors, the producers, their families and Gilbert and Sullivan themselves. But the acting in these scenes certainly carries the film forwards.
If you appreciate well made and incredibly well acted films then do go and see this, just beware if you don't like Gilbert and Sullivan music or find cinema seats uncomfortable for 2 hours and 45 minutes

It's great when you get a good conspiracy theory movie, it's even better when Hollywood doesn't get in the way of a great conspiracy theory movie. Paranoia is the overall theme here, but is it justified or all in Jeff Bridges mind.
The performances are as expected, nothing less than faultless - who would have thought that a smile from Joan Cusack could be so chilling.
My friends and I found the film very involving, with the atmosphere in the last act so tense that I'm surprised we didn't chew our fingernails off. It comes highly recommended, especially for those who want more from life than just Larry King and the X files.
