They Shoot Movies, Don't They? ...The Making of 'Mirage' (2000)
Best Mockumentary of All Time
"Wow" was the only word I could think of after watching this movie.
I had seen a DirectTV preview for a show called DV Theater, and was interested, as I like to do my own movies with friends, and hope to direct one day. The description intrigued me, so I sat down and watched it. I had no idea, going into it, what it was going to be like.
So, onto the movie:
Tom Paulson has just finished shooting his film, and now must put it through post-production. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone, so I'll just say... he gets put through a lot of you-know-what trying to get it done. I was so mesmerized by Tom and really wanted to see if he would succeed. The ending was amazing and powerful, and leaves the viewer dumbfounded at how the Hollywood system can affect someone. Of course, at the time, I thought it was a real documentary. It wasn't until I went onto the film's site that I found out that wasn't so. I was amazed that the director was able to pull off such a convincing story, and Tom's performance was incredible.
As soon as you can, get to the film's web site, and get a copy of this movie. You will not be disappointed, especially if you hope to be in the film business one day.
Saving Silverman (2001)
Funniest Movie of The Century
Hey, the century just started, I'll say it's the funniest movie of the century because, so far, it is.
I haven't laughed so hard since 1995's The Nutty Professor.
Jack Black is paired up with the only other person I've seen with the same incredible comic timing that he has, in Steve Zahn. Zahn steals the show in this movie, with everything he does being absolutely hilarious. The coon scene near the beginning was great, and I liked how his character ended up in the end.
Also, R. Lee Ermey was a nice surprise. He's done comic roles before, but this was beyond anything he's ever done, his only better performance being in Full Metal Jacket.
By the way, Neil Diamond is the man!
This movie is great. Go see it... NOW!
The Perfect Storm (2000)
Perfect
Well...
Ok, it's ALMOST perfect.
But a few problems won't dull this movie's shine.
The Perfect Storm starts off happily enough, but unfortunately it becomes a bit boring. But after the first half hour is out of the way, the film really picks up nicely. Besides the storm, the other sub-plots were interesting:
1. Bobby and Christina's relationship.
2. Murph and Sully's feud.
The last hour of the movie was breathtakingly amazing. The movie is able to hold your attention right from when the storm starts to the end.
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, and William Fichtner give excellent performances like always. The lesser-known John Hawkes also gave a great performance as Bugsy.
9 out of 10
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Brilliant Psychological Thriller
I just saw this movie and I loved it.
At first, I didn't know what to expect. The first hour just sort of drags along slowly, but heck, I guess they had to do the character development thing. The first hour was a happy, pleasant time in the character's life. But things always eventually change...
After the first hour, the suspense is amazing. They paced it very well, and the acting was tremendous. Matt Damon was great, and Jude Law should get Best Supporting Actor.
After seeing this movie, I really want to read the book, because this was a brilliantly written movie.
Girl in Gold Boots (1968)
So this is Hollywood, huh?
The Girl in Gold Boots, besides having terrible actors and a lame script, also never seemed to know what it was about. It starts off telling the tale of a girl hungry for fame. But then it takes a strange turn and it tells the tale of the sleazy side of Hollywood. Then it takes ANOTHER turn, and becomes an anti-drug movie. Then it... oh, hell you get the point. Other highlights are the wormy guy who warps in out of nowhere, and a pointless dune buggy ride.
The only reason this movie gets a 2 out of 10 is because the guy who played Critter did pretty good. But hey, with a name like Critter, he has to be good!
The Matrix (1999)
Perfect 10
All right, let's get one thing straight. Anytime a movie comes out that gets most of its attention from its special effects, people will start complaining, "Oh, they did great with the effects, but the story will probably be lame(Twister, for example.) But The Matrix had one of the most original and compelling stories of all time. The Special FX were wonderful and will set a new standard on how to create good FX. The normally terrible actor, Keanu Reeves, pulls off a good performance for once, and Laurence Fishburne is good as always. This movie was perfect and deserves a perfect 10.
The Norm Show (1999)
Funny, funny, funny...
The Norm Show is gonna be a big hit. Trust me. This has everything a sit-com should have. Great acting, funny humor, originality, and... well that's about all it needs. Norm MacDonald's monotonical jokes hit you dead on, and Laurie Metcalf is great as the leading actress on the show. But still, Norm MacDonald is the highlight of the show. He doesn't even have to make a joke to get you laughing. Though it is kind of unrealistic, with Norm being an ex-hockey-player-turned-social worker, but that's just part of the originality. Everyone will love this show after watching just one episode, so I think it'll be around for a while.
Full Throttle (1995)
One of Lucasarts' Best
Perfect Game! Fun to play and a killer soundtrack by the Gone Jackals. I went right out and bought it. The voices were done well except for Maurice. It was funny, and had a lot of action too. The ending is still fun to play over and over.
Wing Commander (1999)
Not as bad as everyone says
OK, OK, OK. So it isn't perfect. But Wing Commander was still pretty good. The acting was good, and the back story was fine. Though Matthew Lillard's acting left a little to desire for, he did very well in dramatic scenes, like when Rosie is pushed off the flight deck. The only problem I found was in the look of the Kilrathi. Their skin looked like plastic! I have to say, I think Chris Roberts could have done better. He made them look very realistic in the games, so why not in the movie? Oh well. It's really the only problem I had. I give it a 9. I know people will disagree with me, but I don't just go around handing out these high ranks. Wing Commander was good and people should go see it.
