X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
mediocre
This movie might be a descent project in Ratner's filmography but a fall down for the X-Men series... I hope this would be the last one. Because it seems that they want to continue with it but in the this movie we can clearly see that they won't be able to do anything good without Singer. The first half of the movie was good and compatible with the rest of the series... but in the second part, after a while, it started becoming cheaper. There are some scenes that deserves trash can. It's a lot of mambo jumbo with visual effects and make-ups. Also most of the characters are becoming more like cartoons. It's not very bad but a disappointment for X-Men fans.
(and I'm so mad with Bryan Singer, since he left this project)
Madagascar (2005)
Quite fun...
I've just seen it today.
After really good animations last year. It is not so much brilliant. Personally I didn't like the character animations. However, although some jokes are not quite fun it has a good plot.
Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith are really good choices. Nevertheless my real favorite ones are the psycho Penguins.
On the other hand another advantage of the movie is that it is dealing with more issues than escaping from the zoo. In fact the trailer might be called a misleading factor.
Dream sequences were also creative.
Of course the big "I like to move it" stuff... You can't help but sing it after you see the movie...
Cantando dietro i paraventi (2003)
Impressive
Surely it is not a masterpiece but a very very impressive work.
First of all watching a far-eastern myth from the perspective of an Italian director is really exciting. Costume and production designs are very good. On the other hand cinematography is also brilliant. The most interesting part is that cinematography is not something we used to see in far-eastern movies. That increases the originality. Italian speaking characters are not artificial since all the dialogs and themes contain universal issues. Bud Spencer's performance is really good. But the biggest thing is, of course, Olmi's narration style. There were some parallel editing samples in the movie that should have been shown in film classes.
Red Dragon (2002)
bad adaptation
Especially after watching Michael Mann's Manhunter.. you can understand how bad this film is. They even couldn't decide which character they will focus.
Actors' performances are OK but you know this story should not be Hannibal centered. It's more about the others. Dragon character was also not a well drown.
For me this movie is just another excuse for making money over the legendary Hannibal character. I wish Hopkins wouldn't accept to be in this movie.
However there is not anything to blame the director Brett Ratner. As far as I saw he tried to do his best. The script is the bad part.
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
Why is it a masterpiece?
I've read the comments stating that this film is so racist.. I agree! In fact it's really disgusting and bullsh.t! But on the other hand this film is really a masterpiece because David Griffith created the rules for the narrative film with this feature. He is so racist but also a very genius one. Watch it as if it's telling an imaginary story on an imaginary land, you'll see how powerful the movie is. It is one of the starting points of todays cinema. Editing, shots, performances are terrific for that era..
