Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage, and Reckoning (2023)
A must-watch documentary about the racist past of Boston
The series narrates the story of the murder of a White pregnant woman in the late 80s in Boston. But this is not a usual murder docuseries; this is about racism that resulted in massive pain and suffering for the Black community. A Testimony to Why Black Lives Matter is so important. This is the story of a disgusting police failure, a huge media failure, an incompetent mayor, and more importantly a story of racism inside all of us.
Dunn mourns the loss of the city that he knew and grew up in. The death of that city should be celebrated. I'm guessing he went straight to a MAGA rally right after the interview! Do not make America great again.
Ajeossi (2010)
No a contributor to wonderful Korean Cinema
Pretty pathetic script with some imitations from John Wick. The character development is nauseating and melodrama is all over it. I gave 4 stars for interesting cinematography and sound mix. This movie is not an example of many wonderful recent Korean cinema films.
The Teller and the Truth (2015)
Glorifying Antisocial Act
Nicely composed score and beautifully filmed quasi documentary that basically glorifies an antisocial protagonist -Oliver who loved his dog the way Tony Soprano loved children and geese- and a histrionic partner who might have been a victim herself. The narrative does not express any remorse for people who suffered from this couple actions simply because they were conservative and short minded folks from a small town in Texas. This narrative is single minded, too romanticized, and somehow ignorant. I could not believe that we had to watch 40 minutes of this soap opera to realize the. director's fantasies of creating a hallow version of Bonny and Clyde.
As the other reviewer mentioned, the film narrative is a mess and montage is a disaster. I liked the music and cinematography, so 4 stars for that.
Tibet: Cry of the Snow Lion (2002)
A must see documentary
I've rated this doc. 10 ;howver, I believe that it should be rated 7 or 8 regarding a critical point of view. The reason behind of my rating is obvious: a few people (probably with Chines origin or back ground) have been quite unfair to the movie. You may not agree with the political concept of the film or find some statistics unreal or exaggerated, but you can not deny that it's a good documentary in terms of edit, cinematography and music. Moreover, there are thousands of reports by different people and independent human rights organizations which confirms that a permanent genocide is going on at the roof top of the world. It's the exact story of Middle East conflicts between Palestinians and Israelis.Israel tries to settle more Jews in occupied land of Palestine, treat Palestinians like second class citizens and neglect their rights of having access to the job market, education and professional business activities. The difference is Palestinians fight back Israel (some times with terrorism targeting civilians that results in more violence) while Tibetans prefer a non violence resistance. Back to our movie, I like the accurate and interesting story line of the film, many references to the real witnesses and victims and fusion of the politic with Tibetan's culture and Buddhism which are the main aspect of Tibet and its people.
I guess movie should interview some Chinese who are living in Tibet and ask their opinions as well. But I am not sure how legally it would be possible under the strict and harsh supervision of Chinese government. Overall, I strongly recommend the movie for its beautiful and artistic narration of the history of Tibet under the tyranny of Republic of China.
I hope in the near future more and more Chinese respect their wonderful neighbors and fight for own democracy and freedom.
Boodan yaa naboodan (1998)
To be or not be, it's the question...
When the movie was shown for the first time,a little crowd turned out. A friend of mine was among them who had been shocked with the powerful yet true image of Iranians' profound cultural issues. Now after almost ten years,I can fully understand my friend (he is a huge movie lover).
"To Be or Not to Be" depicts the painful poverty, malicious misunderstanding and inevitable miscommunication (people in the movie talk with two different accents and two languages) which are buried in every single layers of Persian culture. These issues like religious prejudice usually ignored by film makers to avoid the censorship of regime (they are also not very favorable for foreign film festivals).
The movie is the story of two girls and their families, one Moslem and one Gregorian who are suffering from a serious heart problem and in need of instant heart plantation. Meanwhile,a young groom (belong to a low-class family) is announced brain dead after being hit by some rogues at the night of his wedding. Now two patients are in constant struggle to convince man's family to give their agreement for using the heart of their son. Young groom's family consider them nothing but vultures and dislike the Gregorian girl because of her religion.
After all movie take us to the real world of Iranian believes. But the conclusion proves far beyond the viewer's expectation. They are real people with real heart and sense of humanity regardless of their anger or poverty ,they'll do whatever they're supposed to do as the attentive human beings.
I mostly like the reality of the movie. It happens as it really happens in real cases (I was working as a doctors in some of those hospitals). The perfect performance of the cast is another advantage for the film. They are some problems with light and editing that could be forgotten for the sake of the beauty of the scenes.
I do recommend this movie for people who are still interested in moral values and if they wouldn't mind some very true criticism of Iranian culture.
