As a huge Gable fan Betrayed is by no means the King's greatest movie. However, as with all of his films, it is certainly not bad and I was interested in the characters and the development of the plot right up until the end. Acting-wise, the three stars, Gable, Lana Turner and Victor Mature do a fine job with Turner looking almost unrecognisable from earlier roles.

If you're a Turner or Gable fan I'm sure you would enjoy this movie but the film has enough drama, tension and intrigue to keep you interested anyway!

What a shocker! Even as a committed Gable fan, I was not prepared for the simple greatness of this movie. Why it is not considered to be a Gable classic, I do not know.

Ploughing the ground for later epics, such as McQueen's Papillon, this tale manages to touch a deeper and more fertile vein. Combines all the elements of a Hollywood classic from the Golden Age such as danger, drama, romance and desperation and yet without any aspect being a makeweight. Even more remarkable is the effortless ease with which the film places our deepest questions beside a gritty and genuinely exciting story. This film offers so much for Gable and Crawford fans but is definitely a must see for anyone!

Excellent performances and direction combine with an exemplary script. Like all good fables, this story runs far deeper than its apparently simple premise. The same can be said of the fine acting from all players. The film explores the notion of nobility from highly contrasted perspectives and it offers plenty to discuss beyond the closing credits. Well worth catching!
