Queer as Folk (2022)
I want to like it - but
I came to this series with a positive bias; I loved the earlier Brit and US versions. I just can't figure out what this series is trying to be. So far, it's a collections of stereotypes (promiscuity, flamboyance, emotional over-the-topness). As a gay man myself, I don't identify with any of these characters. What is the point of this show? To portray our LGBTQ+ community in the worst possible light?
The Underground Railroad (2021)
Almost perfect
An amazing fictional tale that takes the viewer on a journey. Highly symbolic scenes. I wanted to give this series a 10, but the horrendous audio prevents that. I understand that in some spots the dialogue is muted / muffled on purpose, but there are large parts of this series where important conversation is lost by rustling leaves, wind or overpowering background music. I need to hear what the characters are saying. A remix would do wonders.
Good Joe Bell (2020)
Amazing and moving
A heart wrenching true story. The message is powerful and delivered in such a way that the viewer is carried along with the story. A masterpiece for anyone open to the message. The movie may trigger some of us who have experienced similar treatment. A difficult but necessary must-see.
Steven Kan's Sharks of the Corn (2021)
So bad
A high school movie project that gets a failing grade. Commodore 64 level graphics, horrendous acting and dialogue. Tinny sound, implausible plot. If you're looking for the worst of the worst to enjoy - this is your film. Even for this genre, where bad is an asset, this takes bad too far.
Alien Moon (2019)
Mercy me
Even the tinfoil hat crowd would find this one far-fetched. Outrageous claims, blurry stock photos, speculation presented as fact and science fiction novels referenced as evidence.
Asteroid (2021)
Not a Sci-Fi Movie
If you want to see an asteroid - fast forward to the last 5 seconds of the movie. All the rest is asteroid free. The movie has some good laughs but waffles between Hallmark-esque family drama, comedy and conspiracy. Not sure what this film was trying to be, but it certainly isn't an asteroid disaster movie.
Shark Huntress (2021)
Mercy!
There are bad films and then there is Shark Huntress. The dialogue was so halting it was almost as if they were reading crib notes to do their lines. The "Guru" character was so patronizing he sounded as if he was addressing a grade-school classroom. Horrid film, horrid dialogue. A total waste of time.
CERN (2013)
It could have been so much more
What a let down. I was all ready for an in depth, scientific documentary. All I got was a video montage with long silent periods. Great photography, but what were we looking at? I wanted to learn something.
