This is a very good movie that does not get any airplay anymore. I saw the movie when I was a teenager and looked for it to be played again but have never been able to catch it. The cast and the storyline are great. I thought Susan Flannery and Kathryn Harrold were especially good. I still feel that Kathryn Harrold should have had a bigger career than she has. This movie I always would have made a good primetime or daytime series. I don't know if there was ever any talk of it or not. Many of the stars of the movie were former daytime soap opera stars and that probably has influenced on its not being shown anymore and disappearing. It would be a perfect movie for Lifetime TV as the women are essentially the central characters of the movie.
If it does show up - watch it.

There has been a great deal of debate over the years as to whether Mary Pickford deserved her Oscar for this movie. I am not sure as I have not seen all the nominated performances for that year. I can say compared to other performances I have seen, it is not the best but it is good. Personally I feel the best performance in the movie was by the actor playing Mary's father. He was terrific.
Overall I did enjoy the movie and recommend it to all. It is a good movie about the late 20's and an important part of cinematic history. I found the subject matter of the movie kind of surprising for 1929. The writing is not the greatest but it does provide a good enough story to keep your attention.

I just purchased this musical after reading about it and hearing about it for many years. I thoroughly enjoyed and am so happy I made the purchase. I have always been a fan of musicals and esp. love the musicals of the 30's. This first "All Talking! All Singing! All Dancing!" musical does not disappoint. It ranks right up there with the best of them. So many of the songs are memorable and stay with you long after the credits have gone. To me that is a mark of a wonderful musical. When you leave the experience and the songs are still in your mind and stay with you, you know you have experienced something great. Besides the music the performances are great esp. Bessie Love as Hank, the older sister. She should have had a bigger career.
