Anyone But You (2023)
A really sweet and cringy romcom
First off I'd like to say that if you are looking for a sweet and cringy romcom then this just might be for you.
My 6/10 rating is reflecting an unbiased predeposition towards such a movie but say you and your boyfriend are watching this movie, then I can guarantee you that atleast one of you wont be satisfied by watching this.
It's predictable and the parts where it isn't predictable, it's just bad.
The acting is a lot of overacting. The humor is forced and the plot is fairly weak.
Sydney and Glen does their best to fulfill their roles and Sydney's sexual appearance is very much in focus in most parts of the movie. A lot of uneccesary angles and clothing that focuses on her features.
Glen of course is seen without his shirt more times than not and that doesn't help.
This review is mostly negative so you may ask why I give it 6 stars - well I for one have seen my fair share of romcoms and I think its within the parameters of a decent romcom. It may even be just what some (mostly women) look for in a movie so I think it's fair to say 6/10 with the quality of the movie and the quality of the actors being ... not bad.
Watch it if you are in the mood for a sugarsweet, somewhat cringy and somewhat predictable romcom, and if you aren't looking for that, then maybe save this one for another day.
Quiz Lady (2023)
The average movie that will entertain most
I'll start by saying I was sceptical going in to this movie. I'm probably not the target audience, but non the less the story seemed appealing enough to give it a shot.
Im no Awkwafina fan - and especially as a lead, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.
The movie, and in particular the story, is a comedy based feel good story. Its well written and you know from the start it'll be a good story.
The acting I'll say is leaning quite heavily towards overacting, but then again so is most comedy movies.
- it wasn't for me, but I understand many will enjoy this kind of movie.
I wouldn't recommend spending money watching this movie in the cinema unless you are with your best friend and you both love this kind of movie.
It has its moments and with the right people watching, this movie is probably hilarious.
Im leaning towards 6/10 more than 7/10, but I know the average viewer will lean more towards 7/10 (or higher I guess) so I've given it 7/10.
Watch the trailer - if you think its your cup of tea, then you'll probably enjoy this movie.
For the male audience I suggest watching Due Date or something along those lines instead.
57 Seconds (2023)
A hard watch
As someone who has cared for movies for the majority of my life, I can safely say this is one of the most cringe movies Ive ever watched.
Every step of the way there's a constant need to overexplain and simplify the plot, the emotions and the conversations.
Its a movie that is simple yet they are simplifying it again and again.
Every scene feels like it shouldve been more intense, more in debt and less simple.
There's no big surprise in this movie, there's no protagonist with a good storyline, there's no antihero. Its just a constant blur of nothingness.
I cant recommend you to watch this movie. It is a waste of your time.
I dont think Ive ever given as bad a review as this, but it is mainly because the movie has the quality of actors and quality on the screen to JUST barely keep you watching - which makes it even more annoying.
You keep waiting for the big plot twist, the big reveal - the moment you go "OOOH, now it makes sense" - but it never happens.
Spare yourself the time and find another movie.
Puppy Love (2023)
Sugar sweet with a mix of overacting and cringe
Worth noting that this review is biased and Im writing this with all the men in mind that need a reason to not watch this.
Its a movie that is very predictable. The conversations arent genuine, but instead very netflix-sweet. Theres always this happy 'everything is going to be ok' vibe in the air and you barely get any other range of emotions.
Its a sugar sweet movie that is over-the-top and I cannot recommend it to anyone who isnt in love with romance-sugar-sweet movies.
As to the quality of movie ill give it 6/10 as its clearly well made. Theres no doubt its a B movie, but it has all the ingredients to be a well made movie - sadly it just fails in so many apartments.
I love movies that show what the characters are feeling and thinking instead of the characters literally saying it out loud - and this movie is a sinner in that aspect. Everything is being said out loud or narrated.
For the women with a need for a romantic sugar sweet movie - this movie is probably for you - although this feels like it targets the younger audience.
Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993)
All the elements for an amazing movie
Searching for Bobby Fischer is a movie that has the ingredients for an absolutely amazing, unforgettable classic of a movie, but falls short in almost every category.
TL;DR - The movie is worth a watch. Helps if you are interested in chess, but this movie lacks focus and explanation of all the characters. This movie could easily have been 3 hours and be amazing if well explained and in depth.
The story is built up ok, but it tries too hard to sell itself with this entire Bobby Fischer agenda but it really doesn't have a real affect on the plot. You could take out any mention of Bobby Fischer and the movie would be the same.
There's also the relationship between the main character Josh and his father Fred. It keeps hinting that the relationship is good, but at the same time bad, but at no point do we get something really good and wholesome and at no point do we get anything really bad - its just all very mellow. This may be realistic, but for a movie it's a bit lackluster.
Then we have the "teacher" Bruce, played by Ben Kingsley. We get the feeling he doesn't want to teach in the beginning of the movie, but we get no reasoning why. There's no great plot twist that suddenly shows some cool backstory - and again its all just very shallow and lackluster.
We also have a Karen of a school teacher that we meet very shortly and we have some cool exchanges with Josh's father and and one of the other fathers played by William H. Macy - again these interactions and clash of ideas and personalities are great, but too short, shallow and lackluster. Little to no explanation and almost no character development.
I could keep going through almost every character in the movie and bottom line is that I think this movie tries to approach too many angles. If it had just focused on fx. Ben Kingsley's past and maybe Josh's fathers interactions and character development with the other chess kids fathers then it would have been simpler and better, but instead we try to get all these other characters that are somewhat interesting but never truly are explained.
Its a shame, but with that being said I still think its a movie worth watching - but I really truly believe this movie could've been a 10/10.
A Perfect Pairing (2022)
All about the vibe
Watching movies like this. Your typical romcoms.
You get what you expect. A hunk of a man. A good looking woman. Some chemistry. Struggle along the way. Hidden agendas. All in all what all the rom coms have.
MAY INCLUDE SUBTLE SPOILERS
What you dont get is that feeling of great chemistry between the actors. You dont get the feel that the "bad boss" is actually that bad.
You dont get to feel like the straight shooter sister who is supposedly "wise" is all that wise.
You dont get the feel that Lola's "best friend" is actually that good of a friend in the first place. You dont get the feel that them parting ways actually means that much to either of them. You dont sit and expect them to make up and become friends in the end.
Its just one long mellow movie without the vibe to go with it.
I miss more depth. I miss that feeling you get in your stomach when you watch a romcom where you kind of know what is going to happen but just as much that you have certain things you absolutely want to happen.
It was a good romcom, but I wouldn't watch it again.
6/10.
American Underdog (2021)
The true story that so happens to make an amazing movie
First thing you see is the poster. You see an american football player. You think to yourself "another movie about NFL" - some think this as a good thing and others think this as a bad thing.
Regardless of what you think this movie will touch your heart, this movie will inspire you and most importantly this movie will entertain you.
This isn't one of those times where you have to look at oscar statues or most famous lead actor. This is a movie that is built around an amazing story. Played by actors that are true to their craft.
Bottom line is - this movie is an amazing movie I can only recommend. This is a movie I am very likely to rewatch in my yearly Super Bowl frenzy, but just as importantly - a movie, whomever you watch it with, also will enjoy - NFL fan or not!
Ray Donovan: The Movie (2022)
Not a stand-alone movie
It is indeed a movie with a great cast and actors but for the majority that haven't seen the series this movie kinda falls short of excitement.
In its genre there's quite a few other movies that intrigue and capture their viewers more than this movie.
I can't speak to the quality of the movie for those that actually have watched the series but since I personally found the acting and plot good my guess is most who has watched the series will find it very enjoyable.
