Open Water (2003)
A film of poignant realism.
It's summer time. The multiplex theaters are filled with tons of shiny upbeat, fast paced popcorn movies. One movie released for a short period this past summer stood alone. That movie was called Open Water. This film was greeted with very disparate reviews. The ones who hated it usually said it was too slow and or depressing. The ones who loved it appreciated the stark realism. You can put me in the latter category.
There are certainly moments of terror in Open Water. The scenes with the sharks are definitely chilling. But these scenes are not the essence of the film. The heart of this film is the horror of being left alone with no escape. Total isolation. Total abandonment. That is what is TRULY scary if you ask me. The sharks are just the icing on the cake...
Open Water is a powerful movie with a very poignant coda. I highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates realism in movies.
Camp Blood 2 (2000)
Not Surprisingly Stupid!!!
Camp Blood 2 never should have been made. I have no clue where they found the actors at but it was very obvious that they didn't know what the heck they were doing. The directors tried to spice the movie up with a nude shower scene and peirced nipples......big friggin deal the movie still sucks!! The plot is very un-original and the special effects are crap!!! Stay far away from!!!!
Campfire Stories (2001)
BEWARE!!!!THIS MOVIE IS DUMB!!!!!
Everything about Campfire Stories is horrible, there's not one good thing about it. The acting and the actors are just plain stupid (except David Johansen), the special effects are crap and the stories are the dumbest ones known to man! And please, please, please don't confuse the legendary Misfits with the ever so crappy Newfits!!!!!!!!
Quella villa accanto al cimitero (1981)
Silly But Good!!
The first time I watched "House By The Cemetery" was with my boyfriend, at first I was skeptical but I really enjoyed it. I must admit that I jumped once or twice. Yeah yeah, so what if the plot is silly and Bob's voice is rather annoying, it's still Fulci. The movie does have a fair amount of suspense and a few thrills, who can forget the glowing eyes in the basement? Highly Recommended!!!
Don't Go in the House (1979)
One of the best!!!
I just want to get one thing out of the way, everybody talks about how this movie is so degrading to women because of the violence and such towards them, but yet nobody ever says anything about it when it comes to movies like "Silence of the Lambs". Why is that? Well anyway....I'm a woman and nothing in this movie made me feel degraded, I think the movie is very well done. The plot is good and so are the special effects. My favorite scene is when Donny's talking on the phone and he sees his mother's corpse wandering around the house. THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!
Maniac (1980)
Definitely Worth Watching
Maniac is one of the greatest slasher movies ever made. The story is basically about serial killer Frank Zito and his tormented mind. Joe Spinell did a excellent job writing and portraying Zito, the special effects, done by master Tom Savini, are top notch. One of the great things about this movie is you get to see things from the killer's point of view and you actually start to feel sympathy for Frank towards the end of the movie. If you like blood, gore, and logic then Maniac is a great choice. Highly Recommended!!!!!
Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (1967)
Highly Recommended!!!!
Spider Baby is the story of a small family who, from years of incest, become cannibals. As sick and twisted as it may sound it's actually quite humorous. Lon Chaney Jr. did a fair performance as Bruno but I must say that Jill Banner and Beverly Washburn did a much better job portraying their characters Virginia and Elizabeth. Highly Recommended!
Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
This movie is awesome
I like "Halloween 3:Season of the Witch" better than I do the other Halloween movies. Tom Atkins is great in this movie, the storyline is really cool and the "Silver Shamrock" song is catchy. The special effects are pretty decent too. Highly recommended.
Night of the Demons (1988)
Candy Apples with Razorblades
Night of the Demons is a good movie. It's fast-paced and gory. Linnea Quigley does a marvelous disappearing act with a tube of lipstick. The soundtrack was cool but it would have been better if they had some Samhain on it. The ending is awesome.
Highly recommended!
Madman (1981)
"Beware the Madman Marz"
At first I was skeptical about this film, but once I started watching it, I really got into it. There is a fair share of gore and the atmosphere is cool too. The only downside to the movie is Gaylen Ross, I really don't like her. There is one unforgettable love scene between Ross's character and TP,(it's funny). I highly recommend this movie.
Pet Sematary (1989)
Psychologically frightening
Several things about this movie frightened me, more so on a psychological level. The reason being is, if you actually had the opportunity to bring a loved one back from the grave, would you? Or would you let the dead rest in peice? They did a fairly decent job adapting Stephen King's novel into a movie. The acting was okay, there really wasn't alot of gore but when there was, it was pretty cool. I recommend that you read the book before you see the movie.
STAY AWAY FROM THE SEQUEL!!!!!!
The Evil Dead (1981)
Fairly decent movie
Evil Dead is a good movie the first time you watch it, but after the fifth or sixth time, it gets rather old and boring. The FX were pretty cool for something low budget, and the atmosphere adds to the effect of the movie. The only problem I had with Evil Dead is the acting, it just down right sucks and the corny one-liners are crap.
But if you're looking for something fun to watch with your friends, Evil Dead is a good choice.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Overrated
I don't see what everyone loves about this movie. It really isn't even that good, it doesn't rate up there with Silver Bullet or The Howling. I thought the werewolf effects were pretty crappy, the movie was boring. They should have played Bethlehem during the opening credit sequence, which is the only part of the film that I liked.
Aftermath (1994)
Artful, yet sickening.
The gore is well done, the production values are top notch. Nacho Cerda is obviously a gifted filmmaker. But this movie did sicken me at the same time, because of how real they made everything look, this is definitely a movie to hide from the kids.
Mountaintop Motel Massacre (1983)
It's a shame this movie will never be taken seriously.
Even though the film has idiotic characters and bad acting, that's no reason to just dismiss it completely. Many of the best horror films have had terrible acting, and terrible dubbing, but people still love those movies. Anne Chapell plays a demented mother, who after being released from the local asylum, murders her daughter. She gets away with it by making the murder look like an accident. On a rainy night, several travelers stop by at the Mountaintop Motel, run by Chapell, little do they know what awaits them. The music adds to the freaky atmosphere, so does the lighting and the whispering voices. Certain scenes remind me of Let's Scare Jessica to Death. It's just a shame that so many people have dubbed this as just another retarded, poorly done horror film. Just watch the movie, and judge for yourself.
The Prowler (1981)
A decent 80's horror film.
The Prowler is a good movie. There's lots of blood, gore and murder. The plot centers around a jilted GI returns home from WW2, to find his girlfriend has left him for another man. With his trusty pitchfork, he exacts bloody revenge on the both of them, while they're sharing a moment under the gazebo. The local graduation dance is shut down for the next several years after this heinous crime. The killer was never found....
BUT....
Years later the local kids decide to throw another graduation dance....with horrifying results! Blood and gore abound as the GI returns to resume his carnage. A woman gets a pitchfork thru the stomach, a woman's throat gets a vicious trachiotomy, and a man is stabbed thru the top of his head. This is only the beginning of the amount of bloody violence. Tom Savini handled the FX, and you can tell as the murders are extremely realistic!
Highly recommended
Zombi 2 (1979)
One of Fulci's best ever.
The dubbing may be horrible, but the movie isn't. Zombie is filled with gore and zombies that like to swim with sharks on warm tropical days. Now being serious, Zombie is well made. Poor Olga Karlatos gets a wood splinter thru the eye, this is probably the most infamous scene in a horror film. Eye gouging became Fulci's trademark.
Eaten Alive (1976)
Violent Southern Horror Film
Eaten Alive is another one of Tobe Hooper's classics. In this one, Tobe filmed the swamp scenes on a red-lit soundstage, which gives this film an otherworldly aura. Very creepy visuals. As usual, Hoopers film has all kinds of degenerate hillbilly characters- Robert Englund delivers an outstanding performance as local bad boy Buck. Buck likes nothing better than to frequent the local whorehouse and raise hell! He also gives the villian, old Judd, a hard time. Seems that Judd has got himself a little drug problem, too bad that Buck is his dealer!
If you loved Texas Chainsaw Massacre, then you'll love this one!
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
A good family film.
This is one of the best horror movies. Truly a classic, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, takes you to a new level of cannibalistic terror. I can't say anymore about this movie that hasn't already been said.
Highly recommended. Fun for all ages.
Alfred Packer: The Musical (1993)
This is one of the funniest movies ever
Trey Parker and Matt Stone did a great job in making this film. It's a dandy little musical about 5 gold diggers heading east in search of gold, but along the way they encounter a bit of trouble. The film is very funny, some of the scenes are so stupid that they're hilarious. I love the songs and the characters, especially Frenchy and his trapper buddies. The songs are catchy, and after watching the movie you'll be singing them. I highly recommend it.
Sleepaway Camp (1983)
If you're looking for something alarming, then you've picked a winner
At first you think it's going to be just another 80's slasher movie about a homicidal maniac going around and killing teenagers at summer camp, and at first it seems that way. With the cheesy music, and those first kiss scenes, it comes off as corny, but once you get to the ending you are in for a shock. The first time I saw this I felt like I was going to throw up, it's very surprising and gross. But what makes the ending even sicker than what it already is, is the closing song. If you're searching for a shocker, then Sleepaway Camp, is just what you've been looking for.
Labyrinth (1986)
A good movie for the young and old.
Ever since I was little I've loved this movie. If you like Fraggle Rock or The Muppets, then you'll love this. The movie is basically about a spoiled teenage girl named Sarah whose jealous of her baby brother Toby. One night Sara decides that she wants goblins to take Toby away.
Well goblins do take Toby away and then Sara decides she wants her baby brother back. It's not going to be easy because Sara has to wonder through a labyrinth to get to the center of the Goblin City where her little brother awaits. Along the way she meets several friends that help her find way to the center of the labyrinth.
It's a good movie. It kind of brings out a part inside of you that has always dreamed of living in world of magic and fantasy where all sorts of strange beings live. I must say that Jim Henson did an excellent job and so did all of the puppeteers. David Bowie did a good performance as the Goblin King (other than the fact that the family jewels were quite noticable beneath his spandex).
