I really liked the first Death Whisperer. It was a classic supernatural horror movie with a Thai context, instead of same old catholic imagery I've seen a million times. But this one didn't know what it was. Most of the time it felt like there were 2 movies going on at once. One about a family battling with a dark invasive spirit, and --as many others have mentioned- a slapstick Army of Darkness clone. If you love horror and just want to see something new, I guess it's not a total waste of time. Yak is pretty good-looking. But don't expect it to be anything like the first Death Whisperer movie.
I actually really liked this movie which was a surprise because I thought the first one was massively overrated. That's what I've noticed with this: incels loved the first one and hate this one. I was creeped out by the celebrated antihero murderous incel vibe of the first and liked this one much more for it portraying his illness and sadness much more clearly. But who is this movie for, if everyone who thinks they're going to love it, hates it, and everyone who thinks they're gonna hate it, likes it? I know comic book movies aren't cartoonish anymore, The Dark Knight showed us they can be very gritty, but still those movies were very epic. This one is dark, sad, and mundane. I liked it, but who was it made for?
At one point while watching this movie, knowing nothing about it, I turned to my husband and said, "This was definitely directed by a woman." I ended up being right, of course. I knew this because this, like so many other movies of the genre, used assault against a woman as a catalyst for someone going on a murder spree. But usually these movies, when directed by men, send a mixed message: the abusers are the bad guys but the abuse itself is still made to be kind of titillating. I get it. These directors, they can't help themselves. But also I'm tired of sitting through it. This one was different. Her trauma was not sexy. It happened offscreen. It allowed to me actually enjoy the camp of the movie how it should be.
