Clearly not a blockbuster and not meant to be-a tale of ordinary people living through an invasion. Very hit and miss, with a few good bits and a lot of blah. A touch of 'Attack the Block' about the ordinary-ness of the characters, but nowhere near as good, they are a bit two dimensional and get more irritating as the movie progresses. More could have been made of their scientific background, not even mentioned in the second half of the plot. The aliens have a decent amount of Victorian England about them and it's atmospheric enough. The end is a massive fizzer, it just seems to come to a quick stop without anything really exciting happening. Could have been so much more.
Normally not a fan of Australian tv, but this is well made and quirky enough to enjoy. Ben Miller and Sally Phillips are great as they usually are and Michael Theo is an absolute gem! Storyline is a bit predictable, but has enough funny moments to sail through, with some genuine lols (eg. The Nazi bookshop password). Great supporting cast and characters, particularly if you are familiar with the publishing industry! The themes of long forgotten affairs, awkward family dynamics, and nostalgia for youth make a nice undercurrent. And, of course, the beautiful Canberra scenery is enough to make anyone smile. More please!
An interesting cautionary tale of war by late-mid boomers for, and with, millennials. Told through the eyes of people at home, it touches lightly on a few themes surrounding the role of media, propaganda and military deception and ineptitude. While my family were either too old or too young to participate in this war, it reminded me that I grew up catching glimpses of this war, much like Chickies neighbourhood, and never properly understood what was going on- and in that respect it seemed very on point. Zac Efron is great in this, and makes the story seem modern in an effortless way. Much better than I thought it would be.
