The Stratum (2023)
Fun cyberpunk movie
The low 3 stars score the movie currently has is undeserving. First, Cyberpunk movies are a rarity and as fans we'll take what we can get.
Hacking sequences were done well enough. They were not as realistic as Mr. Robot, and Matrix' power plant hack, but not nearly as horrible as Hollywood's usual flying 3D cubes nonsense.
If this had Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt starring in it then the score would be 7 which is incidentally what Passengers has right now even though it's a horrible movie. So that's what I'm rating this.
While unrealistic that the science macguffin would be developed in the location it was, at least the premise was grounded in reality. No alien wormholes or ambiguous "ghosts in the machine" here.
Car Issues with Tyler Hoover (2019)
Not relatable
He buys expensive cars and only THEN he inspects them, if they are worth keeping. The rest of us in the real world don't have the luxury of functioning this way.
His whole shtick has always been risk of losing money on terrible purchases. Oh look he's so goofy and naive, look at what a mistake he is about to make...
But the truth is nothing is ever being risked. There were never any risks. His rich father owns private planes. Losing 10 thousand dollars on a car purchase is utterly inconsequential.
The rest of us don't have the benefit of a safety net to catch us chasing our automotive dreams. We work for 20 years saving every penny and if we are lucky we get to buy a sports car at 40.
The "car wizard" persona has less charisma than a plank of wood.
