Saripodhaa Sanivaaram (2024)
Engaging story presentation with the rich symbolism of mental wellness in my perspective
As Saripodaa Sanivaram has started streaming on OTT since yesterday, here's my take on the movie. It is not a review but more of a discussion involving the psyche of the characters. The director, Vivek Athreya, has tried to establish an engaging story presentation with the rich symbolism of mental wellness in my perspective and connecting to the mental health themes, including PTSD, family dynamics and generational trauma. Here's a breakdown:
I really want to appreciate the way movie started with a Psychologist intervention giving a lead what's in the box. Discussing the characters with respect to mental wellness .
Firstly, the hero's "fixative mindset" symbolizes someone stuck in a particular way of thinking, possibly due to unresolved trauma or a rigid belief system. This reflects the struggle many people face in breaking free from mental patterns that hinder personal growth. The hero's journey could focus on overcoming these fixed patterns to find healing as his Father and Sister were Suffering Consequences of his Fights which adds a layer of family dynamics and how trauma ripples through the household.
Their suffering represents how one person's actions can reverberate through a family, causing pain to all.
The father may feel guilt and responsibility for his son's actions, especially if his subtle behavior contributed to the son's aggression.
The sister, caught between her brother's aggression and her personal life, experiences trauma from multiple sources. This manifested as fear, anxiety, or even PTSD. Her internal conflict-loving her brother while resenting the turmoil he brings-adds to her emotional pain. She have faced social isolation and judged by her in-laws for something she didn't cause, intensifying her feelings of loneliness and injustice.
Elder Brother Syndrome: Koormanand character associated with superiority, responsibility, or pressure to uphold family honor, imposes ideals that mentally distress others. This might be a reflection of societal pressures or the burden of expectations.
Younger Brother Syndrome : Daya played by SJ Suryah, linked to feelings of inadequacy, rebellion, or desire to escape the elder sibling's shadow. This man embodies chaos from unmet expectations and the constant comparisons that fuel conflict and resentment which inturn harass others.
The heroine's toxic, abusive father highlights the lasting impact of childhood trauma on mental health. Her journey centered on overcoming her father's damaging influence and reclaiming her sense of self-worth. This character represents how toxic relationships, especially with parental figures, affect emotional development.
Last but not least , the suffering of Sokulapalem people due to their ancestral deeds symbolizes generational trauma. This portrays how fear, guilt, and resentment are passed down through generations, affecting their present. It explored how unresolved pain from the past continues to impact future generations, creating a cyclical nature of suffering.
PTSD as a Common Thread: All these characters are bound by the experience of PTSD, highlighting the universal impact of trauma. The hero's rigid mindset, the villains' sibling conflicts, the heroine's toxic upbringing, and the ancestral burden of Sokulapalem all speak to different manifestations of PTSD. This sets the stage for exploring how trauma affects various aspects of life and relationships.
Director's Introspection:
Initially, I doubted the work of Vivek Athreya whilst considering him to be one of the new age story makers; as we delve deeper, we get to understand his viewpoint of making a commercial cinema with many fight sequences but a lot more to explore for the inner selves and do the necessary retrospection.
From the director's viewpoint, this narrative offers a profound exploration of trauma's interconnectedness within a family and community. Each character embodies a different aspect of mental health and emotional struggles, reflecting how trauma spreads and mutates within relationships. The visual and thematic elements could shift between past and present, symbolizing how the characters are haunted by their histories while striving for a way forward.
The director might emphasize the characters' attempts to break free from trauma cycles, showcasing resilience and emotional complexity. Even if not all characters succeed in healing, their journey highlights the importance of addressing trauma and its long-lasting effects. The story serves as a mirror for the audience, reflecting the universal nature of trauma and the ongoing struggle to define one's future despite past wounds.
Instead, they can take steps toward healing and overcome the fears that once controlled them, may it be the hero refraining from his fights and understanding the actual purpose of anger and the Sokulapalem people taking their first step against all their nightmares .
The idea of giving up on past experiences and possibly changing for good ,despite fear becomes a powerful theme of resilience and hope. This concept emphasizes that, although many characters are deeply affected by their histories, they are not doomed to be defined by them.
