The Thing (2011)
Computer Monsters not as good as Carpenter's but still very good.
This film is a Prequel. I have no idea why some of these other reviews HERE claim that it's not a prequel. This version of THE THING both sets up and ends right where the (1982) THE THING begins. It's a great story with wonderful special effects and good graphics. Although I must admit John Carpenter's monsters where much more real. You could see, hear, and sometimes actually feel the slime oozing off the Carpenter creatures. This film doesn't have the slime feeling, or, it does, but it's computer slime, not the real thing. There are fantastic scenes all over this film so pay attention. I thought that the music could have used some help. Listen for yourself. There's not much of a soundtrack. This film might have benefited from a Howard Shore type score. Other than that it's fine. Totally Worth Seeing!
Munger Road (2011)
What Could Have Been a Great Film, Ends Abruptly & Badly!
This movie Could have been Great! It's really creepy! It's well acted! It's well directed! The music is astoundingly good! St. Charles, Illinois never looked so good on the big-screen! However, watching Munger Road is kind of like watching The Blair Witch Project with the last 10 minutes of the film missing. The film is missing a conclusion. Munger Road does a wonderful job of creating tension, suspense and then pops all of that beautiful momentum like a balloon in your face without even attempting an adequate, plausible, or even fantastic explanation. It just ends! Which is really a big let down because most of this film is really good. So it you don't mind watching a good horror movie without an ending by all means check out Munger Road.
The Tree of Life (2011)
Tree of Life asks if God is there and is He listening. A+++
There is providence in the death of a sparrow. This film "The Tree of Life" wraps itself around the death of a sparrow. While family members mourn the death of one of their own, God is still molding and shaping the Universe as He did long ago and will be long from now. Humans call out to God in grief and get a feeling like God isn't there. This film asks some of the simple question we all ask in grief. "Are you there God? Do you care about Me God? Do you hear Me God?" Terrence Malick and the entire cast, especially Hunter McCracken, do more than a wonderful job stringing together the thoughts, the actions and the history of everything in and attempt to answer some questions about faith, hope, & love. Awesome film, just heartbreakingly awesome!
Sucker Punch (2011)
Invincible Chicks On "God-Mode" Never In Any Real Danger. Very Irritating!
Even with millions of bullets flying through the air, dozens of swords swinging & the hundreds of punches these hotties take, not one of these girls ever gets a single scratch during the battles. After the first brawl pitting the Girls Club against steam-powered Germans & ferocious shooting planes it's so painfully obvious that none of the girls will be in any real danger that the big budget special effects are just fluff & overkill. What's the point of all the bullets & bad guys if the chicks are indestructible? By the second battle it's just so irritating watching these females punch, kick, shoot, jump & slice their way through crowds of bad guys when they could have just walked & not gotten hurt. The story is clever but watching chicks that fight again & again & can't possibly be defeated is not one-tenth as interesting as watching people who can actually die in battle.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Fun start to Finish
In this modern world of bad movies we have several hundred classics which made it through that are worth remembering. This is one of those films. A+ Film for ladies who want to understand their man. Boys love this film. "Holy Grail" and "This is Spinal Tap" and two of the most important films of this era as far as comedy. but the Grail rules for most quotes in one film. From the start it's a scene by scene extravaganza of gags, sketches and coconuts that will leave even the most hardened heart warmed with British Cheekiness. As many of you know Monty Pythons Flying Circus was a big British hit in the late 60's and early 70's before the Python troupe made their trip into film. This is their first attempt, Holy Grail and it's their best. There's not a man upon this planet who should die without knowing of Roger the Shrubber and the Knights who say Knee. There are some questionable moral dilemmas placed before Arthur and his Knights on their quest for the Grail. All in all, one of the best films to come out of the mid 70's and one of the most influential comedies of all time. A Testament to the equivalent of America's Saturday Night Live Cast, Monty Python were much more consistently funny and remained together like the Stooges.
