This movie stared off good, but halfway through it goes downhill.
It goes from being horror to action/thriller and the ending felt rushed with a few predictable twists.
If I'm feeling generous I'd give it a 7/10. It wasn't horrible, but it certainly didn't live up to the hype. I was a really excited to see it but came out a bit disappointed. Good concept, poor execution.
See now, what they SHOULD have done is make a movie about the Purge itself and the political, moral, and emotional implications it had on society as a whole, with maybe some character being an an-hero and trying to shut down the corrupt government and their "purge". but no... they made into some "been there done that" home invasion flick.
Remember during the beginning when some guy on the radio was talking about how the purge is really just a way to exterminate poor people? This movie had some much potential, they could have gone 100 different directions with it, but they chose the least interesting route.
I expected more from the makers of "Insidious" that's one of my favorite horror movies.
The ONLY horror in this movie was the intensity felt when the purge starts and possibly the creepy guy on the camera (his smile gave me the chills) but it quickly derails into a fast paced shoot 'em up.
Save your money and wait for a DVD release.

Contagion was good, but don't let the trailer fool you. It's not an action-packed post-apocalyptic thriller. It's like a... slow moving, suspenseful drama. The movie focuses more on how ideas can be more dangerous than a virus when placed in the wrong hands. The movie is certainly more realistic then most virus/contamination flicks, meaning that it doesn't go into some overplayed, everyone drops dead like flies, kinda deal. The movie's main focus is on how we should or should not deal with such a crisis.
It's not your average disaters movie. No explosions and fights, very little violence. If anything This is more a thought provoking set piece rather than an actual movie. There's lots of emotion and mellowdrama and I'd be lying if I said it was captivating. However, against all odds, and even with it's flaws you still take something out of it in the end. And I believe that's what the writers intended. It's not about the story. It's really not. It's about the idea. It's about the "what if?" scenario. It's about that lingering thought in the back of your mind when the credits roll. You come out of not knowing exactly what to think. Did you like? Did you hate it? You're honestly not sure. All you know is it stuck with you for some reason.
This isn't the first time Matt Damon has been in a movie with that lingering effect. The movie "Hereafter" sort of leaves you with the same feeling at the end...
This is a movie that cannot be truly explained in words aside from what I have already done. All I can say is, watch it. And when you start watching it, completely erase your mind, don't try to think about it too much, don't go into expecting something. Just watch it. Regardless of how bored you get, watch it until the end. Then ask yourself how you feel afterwards... You may be surprised to find that you aren't really sure...
overall rating: 6/10
