The movie was hard to follow as the dialog was set so low and the accents so thick that it was really difficult to hear what was being said. I had to resort to captions just to figure out what was going on. Which was really annoying.
The imposition of modern attitudes and beliefs further distorted what the movie. The early 1900s was a very different world and time. You almost expected the cast to whip out a cell phone and take a selfie the way they were depicted.
The story didn't really get to a point and the battle scene when it finally came was hugely disappointing.
On the plus side they did get a few things right. One incident where grenades were involved was really well done. The high percentage of troops that smoked was as well. So too was the overconfidence of the high ranking British officers and the fatalism of those who knew their superiors were abject idiots.
While I'm a huge fan of the genre, if I had it all over again I'd not watched this movie.

A great mix of comedy and action with some dorky family emotional stuff tossed in. A good bit of Dad humor tossed in for good measure as well. The movie is fast paced, well done and well worth watching. The plot goes a little sideways at times. There is some adult themed humor but it's done subtly enough that children can watch this movie and be oblivious to most of it. So it's safe for kids, which is important in a Christmas movie like this.
The only downside really is the plot gets a little mired then it just washes it all away for the final showdown, with leaves you feeling like they had fun and then decided it was time to end the movie so the last 15 minutes is rather anticlimatic and a real let down from the otherwise very well done movie.
Johnson was PERFECT for the role. So was St Nick and Gryla. The rest of the cast solid. The production slick and top end. CGI was mostly great, though it seems like a few scenes were edited/revised to death at some point and don't come off as well as the others.
This is probably the first Christmas classic made since Jingle all the way and Trapped in Paradise.
Another huge plus, no political preaching.it's just a story well told.
