Scream VI (2023)
a bit corny
Scream attempts to cater to both newcomers and loyal fans, but the result is a mixed bag. For those unfamiliar with the franchise, the film provides ample background information, but it goes overboard for those already acquainted with "Scream." This information overload may annoy long-time fans.
The movie takes an unexpectedly dramatic turn, resembling a horror soap opera more than a traditional horror flick. It's unclear if this was intentional, but it adds a unique twist to the story. However, it might not sit well with die-hard fans.
Sadly, the film lacks genuine thriller moments. While it's gory and bloody, most of the scares come off as cheesy. The attempt to breathe new life into the franchise is evident but inconsistent.
In conclusion, Scream is a polarizing addition to the franchise, attempting to please everyone but falling short. It provides nostalgia and references for fans but lacks the bone-chilling scares for a satisfying horror experience for newcomers.
Past Lives (2023)
A Thought-Provoking Tale
In the realm of cinematic storytelling, there are films that whisk you away into fantastical worlds, and then there are those that root themselves firmly in reality. "Past lives," directed by Celine Song, falls into the latter category, offering a thought-provoking exploration of life's complexities. The film weaves a delicate tapestry of emotions and connections, with a central theme that feels profoundly realistic.
One of the standout aspects of Past lives" is its exquisite use of the concept of "In yun." This thematic element is beautifully orchestrated throughout the film, adding layers of depth to the characters' journeys. The interplay of past and present, of memories and emotions, is a testament to the director's skill in creating a rich narrative tapestry.
However, there is one aspect of the film that left us pondering. While the movie is undeniably thought-provoking, the believability of the "past lives" connections could have been further enhanced if the main characters had a relationship when they were older rather than as children. This shift in the timeline might have allowed for a more profound exploration of the characters' shared history.
Nora and Hae Sung, the central characters, serve as linchpins in the "past lives" narrative. While Nora's character is well-developed and brought to life with a detailed background story, Hae Sung's background remains somewhat lacking. A more robust backstory for Have Sung could have deepened his character's connection to the past lives motif, contributing to a more immersive experience.
One of the film's most compelling aspects is its refusal to bow to the conventions of a fairy tale ending. "In Yun" underscores the reality that not everything in life concludes with a happily-ever-after, reminding us that sometimes acceptance is the only path forward. This willingness to explore life's complexities is a refreshing departure from conventional storytelling.
Unfortunately, the film stumbles in its portrayal of the husband character, who appears to lack backbone and courage in setting boundaries. This portrayal feels unrealistic and at times frustrating, leaving the audience sympathizing with the character's perceived weakness rather than connecting with his journey.
On a brighter note, the cinematography in "Past Lives" is unquestionably world-class. The film's visual aesthetics add an undeniable layer of beauty to the narrative, enhancing its emotional impact. While the pacing of the movie may feel a bit slow at times, it ultimately serves to build tension and allows the audience to savor the masterful storytelling.
"Past lives" is a touching cinematic experience that delves into the complexities of life, love, and the enigmatic connections that bind us across time. While it may have a few narrative missteps and a frustrating character portrayal, the film's realistic theme, exquisite use of "In Yun," and world-class cinematography make it a masterful addition to the world of thought-provoking cinema.
The Violent Heart (2020)
A twist you wouldn't expect
The foreshadowing throughout this movie was very allusive. The ending does a decent job at tying almost everything together. However the ending did leave us with a few questions. There were some unresolved issues that would have made the story more clear. Nonetheless we appreciate that the twist wasn't predictable and it left us wondering throughout watching what the issue could be.
They seemed to paint the main character like an angry black man but didn't actually show him in that light. In fact it was quite the opposite it was a young man trying to manage his emotions and get back on track.
Overall, this movie did keep us on our toes and we would recommend it to watch.
Plane (2023)
Cliche but interesting
With such a lack luster title 'Plane' we were worried the movie would be boring or simply not good. The concept of the movie was not original, however it contained elements that had us entertained and anxious overall keeping our attention.
With the limited resources they had the depiction of survival mode felt realistic. It was also interesting seeing everyone on the plane fall into a specific role whether they were leaders, followers, or bystanders.
The militia group played their roles extremely well they definitely came across heartless and coldblooded.
We did expect a better ending considering all the drama and chaos that happened. However, the ending did leave us with some questions and concerns.
Sharper (2023)
suspenseful but slow
We were hesitant to continue watching the movie with such a slow pace to the film. This had a great concept, unfortunately the character development felt like a drag. The movie picks up about an hour into it, but by then everything seemed predictable. Tom's story was also intriguing and they didn't delve into his character like the others, such as why was his father was so disappointed in him. Overall the movie is decent, it has some surprising elements would only recommend if you are patient. After the first half the movie picks up and you get rewarded with all the character development at the beginning.
