This is the first film in which Laura Dern disappoints me. It's like she had nothing to work with in the script. While I'm glad these older woman - younger man narratives are becoming a norm (The Paperboy (2012) was equally meh), they feel dry and unimaginative.
For contrast, there is a youtube clip from the Moth - A Love Not Meant For Me by Aryana Rose. I urge you to look it up and see the embodiment of an electrifying woman talking about her relationship with a younger man. I'm a heterosexual woman in her mid 30s and I was mesmerised by the charm of this woman. Here's hoping for more nuance.

Everybody told me to endure the first half of this movie because the second half was well worth it. Regrettably, at right about the mid point I had to exit the cinema with severe back pain and nausea. It turned out a kidney stone had exited my kidney and I spent the next 5 hours waiting for it to make it's way out. I had never had such a strong physical reaction to a movie and I never did find out how the movie ended, for fear of kidney failure or worse. First half, not that bad.
