Noh Chak-hee ( Jung Ryeo-won) was taken in as a child by the Chairman of a large law firm in which she now works and is the star lawyer with an amazing win rate. Just prior to becoming a partner in the company a scandal means she has to take time out and work as a public defender and she goes to work in the office of the kindly Jwa Si Baek (Lee Kyuhyung). They appear diametrically opposed but whilst working together their viewpoints become closer as they become aware of each others pasts and this is aided as they investigate a serial killer. The plot is very clever and deserves credit but this is definitely aided by superb acting from the entire cast which is outstanding. It does have sweet moments but please be aware this is not a romance but a serious drama with some violent scenes.
An English privateer John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) discovers Japan in the 17th century being manipulated by the catholic Portuguese who have kept its existence secret. It is a time of factions vying for power and a warlord takes him in and protects him and this is where he meets an interpreter called Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai) the wife of a violent samurai. This is a love story with a backdrop of political infighting and is full of great costumes and amazing sets. Overall a well acted series with a good story but it falls a little short in the flow, and the writers seem to have taken events from the book it was based upon and strung them together, sometimes successfully but often not. An example is his conversion from foul mouthed racist to a convert to their noble way of life, also the romance side just seemed crowbarred into the story.
After making a mistake in hell a demon possesses the murdered body of a judge and is instructed to send ten souls to hell to atone for her error. As she begins her new life as a judge she comes across a dedicated police officer who has a tragic past and when she begins to send souls to hell he becomes determined to bring her to justice. The judge Kang Bit-na is played superbly by Park Shin-hye and the detective Han Da-on is played by Jae-young Kim whose opinion of her starts to soften. I personally enjoyed the earlier episodes where she was less human and exacting revenge but it is still an entertaining story and worth a watch. Be aware though it is quite violent at times in the depiction of gruesome murders.
