Breaking Bad (2008)
Greatest ending to a story on TV
The writing, acting, cinematography, and showrunning of Breaking Bad leaves the majority of crime dramas wanting for more. I've met people that don't like this show, but without exception, these people haven't watched from start to finish. The plot is simple, a man is given an expiration date, and knowing he never lived up to his full potential, he puts his expertise to use in order to ensure his family can live comfortably. At least, that is, at first. Watching Walter White's descent in to the depths of darkness is fun, frightening, sometimes pedantic, and often heartbreaking. There are certainly speed bumps along the way in regards to the integrity of the plot (the fly episode, anyone?), but even bottle episodes contribute to the rich depth of the story and character development. The way this show concluded was, to me, simply flawless. I haven't found a show with a more concise and plausible ending than Breaking Bad. If you haven't given this show a chance, you're doing yourself a disservice.
Justice with Judge Jeanine (2011)
Absolute garbage
This woman is deranged. Whatever boardroom thought it wise to give her her own TV show needs to reassess their sanity.
She is partially culpable for the brainwashing of a good portion of the population of the USA on behalf of the right wing media.
Flight (2012)
Hollywood spectacle over realism
Just a caveat, I'm a former flight attendant and current pilot, so forgive the specificity of my review. If you're interested in seeing realistic portrayals of aviation, however, this may hopefully be of some use to you
What's good about the movie:
- Denzel is wonderful, as per usual
- Very creative storytelling
- Entertaining
That said, more attention to details were owed to just about every aspect of the plot. By the way, I didn't hate the movie, but I clearly got a bone to pick if I rated it 3 stars...
Denzel plays commercial pilot; pilots get random drug tests mandated by the department of transportation and the FAA. His character most likely wouldn't have slipped through the cracks without someone having reported him for drug or alcohol use at some point, given that you can smell liquor on someone in the middle of drinking vodka on a plane. And the flight attendant Margaret wouldn't have had access to the cockpit in-flight like that, not if this were being portrayed post-911. ATC wouldn't have cleared the flight to depart directly into severe weather. Also, you wouldn't want to overspeed a plane going through turbulent air. The faster you fly the more stress is put on the structure of the plane, you generally want to fly slower into severe turbulence. Lastly, the FO pulled the fire extinguisher in the right engine, then later he says 'we're losing the left engine.' Those fire levers will generally shut down the engine to prevent any further fire creating incidents from happening.
I know this is nitpicky, but as an audience member I would have appreciated more consultation with actual members of the aviation community in developing the screenplay. This just reads like a Hollywood spectacle, and hadn't been able to cast Denzel, I would have give it two stars fewer.
