And unfortunately that's been the theme of the season so far, it's just been all rather OK. It's not bad, these episodes have been better than anything in season 7 and 8 of GOT, perhaps seasons 5 and 6 too. But man it is SLOW.
Slow pace is fine when it means something. Unfortunately, this season has been a 2 year wait, with 2 FEWER episodes in the season, and episode 6 is the FOURTH really slow burn episode.
I was concerned after episode 3, that was a slow episode, but it paid off with a climatic episode 4. After that I thought surely, alright, the war has really started now, things are going to start moving quickly.
What we got instead were 2 incredibly slow episodes. 5 was worse than this episode in terms of pacing I feel, but I think this episode is getting review bombed now because people have had enough.
Daemon has been absolutely butchered this season. I think there's no possible payoff that could have made this all worth it. 4 episodes of watching him sleepwalk through Harrenhal is frankly unacceptable. In the source material there's a bit of a gap with Daemons story at this point in the Dance, and the writers clearly didn't know what to do with that. You can't have Matt Smith disappear for most of the season, he's a stellar actor and one of the biggest draws of the series. So instead they just have him wandering about for episode upon episode. It's complete madness, it's so boring to watch. For the past 2 episode friends and I have started each Daemon scene by saying 'PLEASE let this be the end so he can start doing cool stuff', but no. It's bad, and will leave a bad taste for season 2 in my mouth.
I definitely haven't given up on the series, and I think everyone else should do the same. The show is still quite good compared to other shows lately. Like come on this season still completely blows Rings of Power out of the water. Season 1 was really, really good. Perhaps seasons 3 and 4 will be really good, and we'll remember season 2 as a bit of a dip in the story, but we'll fondly re-watch the entire series years from now and just roll our eyes at the Harrenhal scences.
I live in hope! I'm remaining optimistic, because the source material they have is really good, and unlike GoT, they actually have an ending!
