Treason (2022)
I was hooked
I thought it looked good, I thought I'd get into this for a few days. I ended up watching the whole series in one go.
Therefore, I fail to see why anyone would slate this.
If youre not into an espionage, double-crossing, political, intelligence agency, manipulation and corruption plot based in London (what more do you wnant?) surely you might respect that this is still a solid piece of production and writing.
It's not James Bond car chases in expensive sports cars with their huge budget, predictable suspense but it moves along pretty rapidly and I'd challenge anyone right up to the last episode to predict the outcome.
Loved it.
Nice Girls Don't Explode (1987)
Hey Come on!
You watched a movie called "Nice Girls Don't Explode" and your complaining? What did you expect?
It was what I expected. Cheap? Yes, but bonkers and as funny as some other slapstick titles.
I expected it to be daft and quite enjoyed it's lunacy.
If you took the plot seriously and judged it to be too simple or weak you should stick to mainstream or predictable comedies, and there are, of course, many much better so don't watch it if you want sophistication.
The title should intrigue those with a sense of the ridiculous, that's me.
It's certainly different!
If you watch it, regardless of what you make of it, you are guaranteed to tell people you've seen a movie called "Nice Girls Don't Explode"....
Papillon noir (2008)
Good twisty thriller
I enjoyed being double crossed.
I confess it looked a little slow and vague to begin with but the plot became deeper and darker......and quite misleading.
Give it a go.
Night Sky (2022)
What happenned there?
I thoroughly enjoyed the journey but I've no idea where I found myself at the destination.
Intriguing plot, stella cast but for me the weakness was the vague emptiness I felt at the end.
That question, what exactly was that about?
Several unresolved character situations.... You know, what happened to them....and them.....
Never mind, it's a nice journey.
Slow Horses (2022)
Good stuff
Nice to have a sligthly different take on espionage, MI5 plots.
The MI5 rejects have to cope with the aftermath of their failures as well as a rather revolting and arrogant team leader, Gary Oldman, who looks like he had fun playing the part. He's good.
Definitely worth a watch.
The Outfit (2022)
A piece of class
A subtle and clever plot, nicely played out by the cast with many double crosses, twists and switchbacks on the way.
Clever because it is all shot in one place.
Don't let that put you off unless you just want CGI action and panoramic photography.
Go for it.
After Yang (2021)
Well produced but slow.
It was somewhat long and drawn out coming up with it's premise.
I wasn't expecting an actionmovie of course but without any tension, I can't say I found this captivating.
The Devil All the Time (2020)
Another well produced & acted movie with a low satisfaction level.
Unfortunately, having just watched "Uncut Gems" I found myself sinking into yet another depressing, quality production of misery.
Sure the cast are excellent but the story is just grim.
For me, as it comes hot on the tail of Uncut Gems I was not prepared to commit to this movie therefore after an hour of pointless violence and screwed up people (yes I know that's the point of the story) I had to pull the plug.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Well produced and acted piece of negativity
Sorry, low stars.
In it's favour, the whole production and cast are great but having watched this depressing story to the end I can only say how pointless was the life of the lead character.
It did have me wondering to the last minute how this person was going to end up after a endless catalogue of disastrous decisions.
Sadly, no matter how well it was presented the story left me completely unsatisfied and rather wishing I hadn't bothered watching it through.
Sicario (2015)
Great depiction of brutality
Brutality, where human lives are valueless and fear of death is only for the victim. Sheer aggression and violence like we love in the movies but could never handle in real life.
There are parts of the world many of us would find unbearable.
A great piece of work.
Love the tunnel scene on infra reds.
Kimi (2022)
Nice, slightly unusual plot
An atmospheric feel of it's location. The agrophobic tech worker stuck in her almost modern day Hitchock "Rear Window" apartment. I enjoyed it a lot.
I fail to see why the previous reviewer feels that as it is set in Covid times it has to make a statement about it? Covid statements would be a distraction, whether from a stance of pro or anti vaccine POV. If it was set in the Covid present then it seems reasonable to include a few masks.
The Responder (2022)
Quality
Martin Freeman is a class act, he already was but this is him at his best but the rest of the cast are also spot on.
The Liverpool feel is so real, I used to live and work there.
The depiction of tragic lives is sad and somewhat depressing but again realistic.
I can't fault it.
Watch it.
Hidden Assets (2021)
Intelligent police drama
I'm a sucker for the genre, I watch a lot of them.
This rates as one of the best for me, largely because it stepped out from the common London Cop setting (although I don't have a problem with that as a location).
Situated in N Ireland and Brussels gave it a fresh look, different accents.
The convincing cast weren't stars but acted like them, weren't driving a hard action performance yet there was action and an outcome that wasn't predictable.
A nice balance.
Boiling Point (2021)
Another class perfomance by Stephen Graham
Stephen Graham, a class actor in modern times works this piece so well demonstrating the pain and stress of the job. Having said that, there is not one member of the cast that is lacking the pain, the pressure of serving, trying to keep people happy.
It's gotta be one of the most stressful workplaces, serving a fussy, awkward public, always looking for faults.
Always tip the people that serve you.
A thoroughtly original movie set in everyday life.
Excellent.
Watch it.
Journey's End (2017)
A hard look at man's suffering
A powerful insight into the personal pain and hopelessness of the trenches.
The sheer dominance of an elite class of officers and those further up the chain of command doing what we all know to be a hopeless shedding of life like a gamblers addiction.
Knowing the outcome but simply tipping more human chips into the obvious pit of loss.
So well portrayed by a solid cast.
I'm so glad I wasn't alive then.
Not fun to watch but riveting all the same.
The Stranger (2020)
Revelations galore!
I loved this. So many unpredictable twists and turns in a mystery that keeps it's secrets from predictability along the way.
Project 12: The Bunker (2016)
Not so bad folks
What made this movie OK for me was the location.
It's stated as the Canary Islands but the bunker, the tunnels? I couldn't find any reference to them, what were they built for, where exactly were they?
Not by any stretch of the imagination an award winner but nevertheless the cast were competent and once they got themselves stuck into the tunnels it was at least atmospheric.
The Book of Eli (2010)
A Denzel fan disappoinment
Denzel's great but there's not a lot he can do to help this kind of directionless plot with a vague God message.
Granted, there's lot's of well crafted violence, action and scenery. Even the excellent Gary Oldman and his henchmen, but they are just angry aggressive characters lacking in depth.
I'm surprised this is so highly rated.
Danny the Dog (2005)
Pretty awful
Jet Li is undeniably a stunning stuntman, martial arts master. I've seen him cast in so much better movies.
This movie had nothing for me.
A weak plot. Jet Li playing an unbelievably pathetic character.
Ultimately violent yet sentimental pap.
Sorry, deffo a film without substance.
1917 (2019)
Personally, one of lifetime's greats
There a few films one can count as such. This graphic, stunningly scenic story sums up the horror of it all.
The absolute pit of human experience, yet the most supreme of character.
This is no glossy, heroic war film, although it has it's heroes.
Instead it is a realistic and brutal record of the times.
Superb.
Prisoner X (2016)
Not bad at all
An odd little plot with an odd twist.
Worth a watch.
A Simple Favor (2018)
Smart movie
An intelligent, dark comedy with an original plot, a few twists that will not give away the ending, until.....
The end!
Good stuff.
An Inspector Calls (2015)
Excellent
A very haunting drama.
Faultless cast.
So glad I didn't miss this one.
The Hunted (2003)
A Perfectly Fine Action drama
Two great leads, Tommy Lee Jones, Benicio Del Toro.
No, it's not a pioneering epic but none the less, a good action movie.
Many good locations.
If you want Shakespeare go to the Globe but you like action movies, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Angel of Mine (2019)
Powerful drama
For me this turned out to be one of very few movies that I think I'm going to be referring to for a long time.
An exceptionally good drama with an extraordinary cast playing their way through so much tension. I was already a fan of Noomi Rapace but the rest of the cast were equally right up to scratch.
Unless you're an absolute guns and action freak grab a sofa sink in.
