Boundearth (2024)
An Oscar Grand Slam For Sure
Even if you're not an EarthBound fan, there's a little something for everyone in this amazing animated feature. For example: are you a fan of Seth Rogen's The Interview? There's a reference to it in the Fourside segment. Say you're a fan of One Piece; references to the series are scattered throughout the flick (Ness usually being involved). Fans of South Park can also find some references to their favorite series as well.
Y. P. Corp's BoundEarth animation has little details for everyone to enjoy - both in the places you'd most expect those details to appear, and in the places where you'd least expect them. I'd highly recommend giving this a watch on YouTube - be it on your mobile device, computer, or TV.
BoundEarth Rating: 10/10.
Gojira tai Megaro (1973)
Yes, it's bad. But it's still VERY ENJOYABLE.
Watching this through Mystery Science Theater 3000 at first and then seeing the original film first-hand made me really enjoy this film.
Yes, I will admit - Godzilla vs. Megalon has it's issues. There's stock footage all over the place, the acting is about as cheesy as the '60s and early-'70s can get, the only two deaths we actually see are cut out of the English dub's first release because the Federal Communications Commission is absolute garbage (yet 4K Media (formerly known as 4Kids) get blamed for what the FCC does to Yu-Gi-Oh! And other anime they dub), but despite all that... I loved this movie.
The action & comedy blend so well together you might as well think you're watching something like Airplane or Down Periscope. Plus, we get the debut of one of the most popular kaiju to grace the Earth - Megalon, who was initially supposed to appear in Godzilla vs. Gigan (the movie before this) and is a kaiju that's a hybrid of a rhinoceros beetle & a cockroach. He apparently goes way back with King Caesar as well!
Despite this being Megalon's only movie (as well as Jet Jaguar's), he became popular enough to continue appearing in video games & comic books! I already mentioned the MST3K episode earlier when starting the review, and I recommend searching for it on Internet Archive if you haven't seen it. The episode (albeit not my favorite) is probably the best one I've seen on the show, with it featuring the infamous popcorn skit in the fourth host segment - credited as being Michael J. Nelson's favorite skit on the show.
The Black Scorpion (1957)
You'd think Warner Bros. would distribute more kaiju movies.
When volcanos erupt in Mexico, gigantic black scorpions animated by Willis O'Brien (responsible for the effects in 1933's King Kong, including the movies removed spider scene) start invading and it's up to Hank Scott (Richard Denning), a small village in Mexico, some scientists, and the US militia to stop them.
I remember seeing the movie for the first time watching MST3K and it was love upon first watch. The performances were incredible, the choreography was clean, the kaijus are now my sleep paralysis demons... even with the riffs Joel, Trace and Josh bring to the table for their riffing for MST3K's Season 1 finale, this movie is STILL incredible.
And it was distributed by Warner Bros. Of all companies.
Yeah, when you think of kaiju movies, you usually don't think of Warner Bros. But considering the great reviews both on here & on Rotten Tomatoes, you'd think Warner Bros. Would distribute more of them.
Street Fighter: The Animated Series (1995)
This is delicious!
I've gotta be honest here - even if I only watched CLIPS of the series on YouTube, I still died of laughter at how good this laughably bad series is. With the first season airing a year before Alpha 2 hit shelves for the kids of the 1990s to play on their home gaming consoles, this takes place after the live action movie released in '94. The main cast stays true to the movie, of course, but then you've got the guest characters. If you've read the 2007 manga prelude to Alpha 2, yeah - Sakura's definitely true to the lore & the games here. So accurate in fact that she can make Guile obtain an animation error just by throwing him.
Guile: "Look... I understand how you must feel, kid, but we can't bring you along on a dangerous mission like this."
Sakura: *throws Guile so hard on to the ground the animators forgot how to draw his head*
It also spawned some memorable memes (Bison's well known "Yes!"), and listen... if you're calling this bad, let me just remind you that there are worse shows & movies out there.
Bison: "Well done, Balrog!"
Uncharted (2022)
Rating it a 5 because it isn't out yet, so consider this more of a preview instead.
So... the movie adaptation of the first Uncharted game. Doesn't look too bad, and I really like the casting - after all, it is Nathan Drake starting out on his first adventure, so it's only appropriate that a young actor (Tom Holland) got the role. I feel like this has a future and that Columbia, Atlas, and Arad work on adapting the other three games as well. ;)
Down Periscope (1996)
If You've Seen This Military Parody, You've Seen Them All.
This is the FUNNIEST military parody to ever exist, but I don't want to go into a full explanation of the film itself because y'all might've seen it already, so here's my favorite scene:
Captain Dodge: "Well, Marty Pascal, looks like you're guilty of attempted mutiny."
Marty Pascal (yelling): "That's absurd! These people love me!"
Captain Dodge (on radio): Mr. Stepanak, would you come to the control room, please?"
It still gets me laughing after all the times I've seen it, and it never gets old and bland.
Doragon bôru Z: Kyokugen batoru!! San dai sûpâ saiyajin (1992)
It's Good To Be Bad
The first movie to take place during the time where Future Trunks was around, and the first Dragon Ball movie I had ever watched. Oh yeah, here's the plot!
Plot: Goku, his wife, his son, and their friends go shopping in a mall. Unfortunately, however, Androids 14 and 15 attack Goku, so Goku and Trunks take the fight with the two Androids to the arctic, with Gohan and Krillin coming along for the ride. Android 13 appears and takes on Goku, but Vegeta and Piccolo come in as back up. But once Vegeta and Trunks take down Androids 14 and 15, Android 13 merges their parts with him to enter his final form. Will the Z-Fighters be able to take him down? All hopes rest on Goku's Spirit Bomb, but will that be enough?
This is one of my favorite movies in the Dragon Ball franchise, and it's also what got me into Dragon Ball in the first place! Yes, even before Dragon Ball Z Abridged! The fights are amazing, the storyline gets straight to the point, the Bruce Faulconer soundtrack is in this movie... (WTF, it's so good!) ...and the way Goku kills Android 13 is so satisfying! #SpiritBombSuperSaiyanForever
Bottom Line: Overall, this is one of the best Dragon Ball movies ever made, and in my opinion, if you ever had to start watching Dragon Ball movies in ANY order, start with this one. By the end of the movie and once you see the finale, you WON'T be disappointed. And THAT is a promise.
Doragon Bôru Zetto Ryû-Ken Bakuhatsu!! Gokû ga Yaraneba Dare ga Yaru (1995)
The Last of the Best (At Least Until 2018 Came Along...)
This is one of the darkest movies, if not THE darkest, in the entire Dragon Ball series, and it's not too hard to see why. Like SSJAniFan said on July 27th, 2003, there have been good movies (in my case, 5 and 8), bad movies, (in my case, 12... sadly), and those overhated ones that I think are really good in between (in my case, 11 and 9), and this one goes up in the #3 spot of my Top 3 favorite DBZ films (with Bio-Broly being #2 and Cooler's Revenge obviously taking the #1 spot).
It introduces a Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time like character (i.e. Tapion) who has an ocarina and an awesome sword, similar to the one Future Trunks has. He acts like Yoshikage Kira for the first half of the movie, wanting Goten and Trunks to leave him alone constantly as he wants to live in peace, even though the boys try to be polite. However, the two eventually bond, and Tapion even considers Trunks his brother.
Once Hirudegarn is released however, havoc ensues. There's enough explosions for a war movie, and the city is in ruins. Eventually, the surprisingly-unlikely team up of Goku and Trunks save the day, with Trunks cutting off the ginormous Majin's tail, and Goku killing the gigantic beast with a Dragon Fist, which he would later continue to use in the sadly non-canon Dragon Ball GT.
Overall, I think that this is one of the best Dragon Ball films of all time, with the final battle and Tapion and Trunks' bond being the highlights of the film. To me, it's not as good as Bio-Broly or Cooler's Revenge were, but it definitely ranks up there.
Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no Fusion!! Gokuu to Vegeta (1995)
It Wasn't Bad, But It Wasn't Good Either...
I'm just gonna list the pros, cons, and my conclusion of this movie:
Pros: The battles were amazing, the main villain was similar to Bio-Broly in terms of how good of a villain he is, Gohan kills Frieza in one punch, Super Saiyan 3, Gogeta, Gotenks kills the entirety of Hitler's army with just 100 Kamikaze Ghosts.
Cons: Pikkon mostly gets no action whatsoever due to him being on the sidelines for most of the movie, Hercule didn't provide as much comic relief as he did in the last film but at least he gave us some, the Gogeta vs. Janemba battle was a little TOO short, but still good nonetheless.
Conclusion: To me, it's not bad, but it wasn't as good as people said it was. It would be better if Hercule and Pikkon got some more screen time and if the Gogeta and Janemba battle was a little longer. This is why that I'm ranking this 7 out of 10.
Dragon Ball Z: Ginga Giri-Giri!! Butchigiri no Sugoi Yatsu (1993)
One of the More Underrated Movies in the Franchise (Along with Bio-Broly)
Plot: After the Cell Games and Goku's death, Gohan and the other Z-Fighters go to the Intergalactic Martial Arts Tournament. Gohan, Krillin, and Trunks dominate the tournament, making it all the way to the finals in the process. But once Gohan meets Bojack and his Galaxy Soldiers in the Battle Zone, things take a turn for the worse. With Goku dead, will Gohan and the Z-Fighters be able to stop this new threat?
For those of you who hated this movie, you have no idea what you are talking about. This movie takes place between the events of the Cell Games aftermath and before Goten was born. The fight scenes are amazing, the scene with Goku saving Gohan from being crushed to death was awesome, and of course Mr. Satan provided some good comic relief like in the Cell Games Saga.
Although he doesn't appear until halfway through the movie, Bojack gives himself one of the best introductions ever, saying "Company... good. It's been so long... since I snapped someone's neck!," which catches Gohan's (and the audience's) attention. His backstory is also explained very well (thanks, King Kai.), and the way he takes on the Z-Fighters one by one is amazing. This could have been better if we got to hear Zangya's thoughts on SSJ2 at the very least, but overall, it's still a good movie.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Senshi Gekiha!! Katsu No wa Ore da (1994)
What do you get when you combine popular horror movies with Dragon Ball? A masterpiece, that's what!
Plot: Goten, Trunks, and Lazuli (AKA: Android 18) follow Mr. Satan to Mei Queen Castle (similar to the Monsoon Place in the 007 film Octopussy). There, they find a bunch of Bio-Warriors and scientists in a laboratory. However, Goten and Trunks also find a clone of Broly called Bio-Broly, and when the monster is released, they soon find out that he's just as strong as the original. With Goten and Trunks having a score to settle against Broly and the Culture Fluid absorbing everything and everyone in sight, will the two boys, along with Lazuli, Krillin, and Mr. Satan, make it out of this battle of life or death alive?
With this being the third of four Broly films I'm watching to celebrate Dragon Ball Super: Broly's release, and the most hated of the original animated films, I was expecting my reaction to be like the rest of the Bio-Broly haters when I started this movie, specifically "This movie is terrible, what was Toei even THINKING?!" But by the end of this movie, I found out that it did NOT disappoint!
First off, I'll begin with the upsides, starting with the plot. It was really interesting to see flashbacks to Dragon Ball Z: Broly - Second Coming (specifically the flashback with Goten, Trunks, Videl, and Maloja, and the one where Goku and his sons kill Broly), and to see what happened to Maloja shortly after that.
Then, there's the characters themselves. Goten and Trunks (the kid Trunks, not Future Trunks) return for their second movie appearance, Krillin appears for his 11th movie appearance straight, while Broly and Maloja, the priest from the previous film, return for their last. We also get to see three good guys in the show make their first movie appearances: specifically Hercule, Android 18, and Marron. Hercule makes another appearance in Fusion Reborn, but Lazuli and Marron aren't seen again until Battle of Gods.
Next up is Bio-Broly himself. Sure, his design for the majority of the film maybe a little too weird to put on paper and on screen (more on that later), but he can kick some Super Saiyan avocados. He's just as strong as the original Broly was in Second Coming, but combine the OG Broly's strength with bio-technology, and you've got a force to be reckoned with.
Finally, the battles, and I personally think that they are the highlight of the film. Sure, they're mostly against the main villain, but they didn't disappoint me. Heck, Bio-Broly even put a small dislocation on Goten's shoulder with his Mouth Energy Wave attack, and the animation in the fights is GODLIKE! And they called this movie terrible.
Now for the downsides, which there aren't many. First is Bio-Broly's design. The good thing about this is that it put FEAR in my heart when I first saw it in the 2005 trailer. He looked like something out of a horror movie! The DOWNSIDE however, wasn't how scary he looked: it was how the design looked. It's simple:
Step 1: Take Broly.
Step 2: Melt his skin off so you can see his chest organs.
Step 3: Make his eyes red.
Step 4: Cover him in melted dark green colored Play-Doh so much that you can only see the back of the spikes on his hair.
Step 5: Put lots of blue raspberry Jolly Ranchers in Broly's mouth.
Step 6: You have Bio-Broly.
Now, I'm not saying that this design was bad, heck, I think it was one of the most creative and unique Dragon Ball Z movie villain designs I've ever seen! However, I just don't think it was the right design. I'd rather like it if they did the blue bio-warrior design for this movie, but kept the hair and Broly's eyes the way they were.
The other downside is that Goku barely appeared in the movie. The only parts he appeared in were when the flashback of Broly dying happened, and at the very end of the movie on Grand Kai's Planet. I would like it if the movie was a little longer so we could see Goku and Pikkon fighting Broly in Hell.
In conclusion, other than these two minor downsides, Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly is not only one of the most underrated Dragon Ball films (along with Tree of Might, Lord Slug, and Super Android 13), but one of the best Dragon Ball movies YET. Bio-Broly is the first horror movie based Dragon Ball Z movie I have ever watched, and it featured a really unique villain that is sadly hated among most of the Dragon Ball franchises biggest fans.
Dragon Ball Z: Kiken na Futari! Super Senshi wa Nemurenai (1994)
The Mean Lean Killing Machine Broly is Back in Action! (And he's brought some comic relief with him too!)
Minor Warning: This review DOES contain spoilers! If you haven't seen the film yet, watch it before reading this!
Plot: Shortly after Broly's defeat on New Planet Vegeta at the hands of his maternity ward neighbor Goku, Broly has managed to survive and escape to Earth via an Attack Pod. The elements enclose around him for seven years, and it's not until Goten starts crying over an apple that Broly gets back into action. Seeking revenge on Goku, his friends, and his offspring, it's up to Goten, Trunks, Gohan, and Videl to stop the Legendary Super Saiyan. But when the boys and Videl are down for the count, can Gohan stop the menace that was defeated by his father seven years ago?
This is the second of four Broly films I'm binge watching, with "Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan" being the first one I watched. Needless to say, it has just as much action as the first Broly film, but some comic relief as well, specifically in the form of Goten and Trunks.
After collecting six of the Dragon Balls with Videl, Goten and Trunks head off to stop a T-Rex that's been terrorizing a village. However, when Videl smacks an apple off of Goten's hand during their stealth mission, Goten loses his marbles and starts crying. Unbeknownst to him, as well as Trunks and Videl, this awakens Broly from his seven year long slumber.
Videl being beaten down with ease and Trunks and Goten dueling with Broly catches Gohan's attention and he heads after them. Gohan catches up with the kids and duels with Broly, causing Broly to enter his Legendary Super Saiyan form and Gohan to enter Super Saiyan 2. This is one of my favorite fights in the Dragon Ball Z movies.
This movie does lose some points for me, however, because of Broly's death in at the end. He could've at least apologized for what he did to Goku and the rest of the gang. But Broly dying in the sun was cool as well.
Dragon Ball Z: Moetsukiro!! Nessen Ressen Chô-Gekisen (1993)
Taking the Word "Legendary" to a Whole New Level
I'm currently binge watching all the Dragon Ball films with Broly in them to celebrate the 1 year birthday of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. This is the first of the four-movie set, and by far one of the best Dragon Ball Z movies.
At the start of the movie, we are introduced to Paragus, who warns Vegeta of the Legendary Super Saiyan and persuades him to rule New Planet Vegeta. Goku is also warned of the threat by King Kai, and Goku, being the guy who likes strong opponents, sets out to find him.
Shockingly enough, after a duel between titans, Goku later finds out that Broly, his neighbor in the maternity ward, is the Legendary Super Saiyan. What follows is one of the longest battles in the Dragon Ball franchise, and Vegeta going through a mid-life crisis.
I like how Takao Koyama and Akira Toriyama both made this Broly a force to be reckoned with, and the Legendary Super Saiyan transformation that Broly undertakes is so incredible, and to me, it was the highlight of the movie. The trailer to this movie is incredible as well.
In fact, this movie gained so much popularity, it spawned two sequels: Broly - Second Coming, and the infamous Bio-Broly. I'd recommend watching the Broly films in this order: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly - Second Coming, Bio-Broly, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
This movie is battles, humor, and action galore in both Japanese and Funimation dubs alike, but I'd recommend watching this in the Funimation dub. The rock music from Haji's Kitchen in the final battle between two very strong warriors born on the same day as the other doesn't fail to disappoint.
Sure, the final fight is ended in only one punch (Goku was Saitama before One Punch Man was a thing, people), but two childhood rivals duking it out to see who was stronger never fails to get my Saiyan pride kicking in.
Doragon bôru Zetto: Tobikkiri no Saikyô tai Saikyô (1991)
The Absoulte Perfect Dragon Ball Z Building Block (First Review, Don't Judge.)
Being the second Dragon Ball movie I have ever seen before watching the show it self (I watched Super Android 13 before this), I watched this movie on DragonBallOnline and I thought I'd get the good old terrible Japanese dub with Goku sounding like a younger version of Kale from Dragon Ball Super. But, boy-oh-boy was I WRONG!
First off, the story. This movie takes place between after the Trunks Saga and before the Androids Saga, and it offers a unique approach to it's characters from both sides of the force of good and evil.
On the good side we have Goku, who after defeating Frieza on Namek, is taking his time off from training for the Android threat to camp with Gohan, Krillin, Oolong, and Icarus (the latter making his final movie appearance). On the bad side, we have my favorite Dragon Ball Z villain to ever grace the TV screen: Cooler.
While Goku and co. are camping, Cooler finds out from his Armored Squadron that Goku has destroyed Frieza on Planet Namek (They probably found this out during the Trunks Saga). Cooler therefore has two motives: to kill Goku, and to see the power he used to kill Frieza.
Eventually, both sides converge, and havoc ensues: Goku is burned by Cooler's Death Beam and slowly gets burned to death on the inside, Cooler's battle with Goku, the transformation sequences, everything! It makes for one of the best stories in Dragon Ball Z history.
Second off, the voice acting. Andrew Chandler voiced Cooler spot on, and even when Cooler was killed in the sun, Andrew Chandler was amazing. I also like how Sean Schemmel voiced Goku in this movie. It was like you could feel his pain when Goku was slowly dying. (Then again, Senzu Bean ex Machina.)
And finally (you know I had to save the best for last), the music! Featuring The Game by Disturbed during Base Goku vs. Base Cooler (Frieza's Final Form is Cooler's Base Form for some reason. XD), Change by Deftones during SSJ Goku vs. Final Form Cooler (just this song alone is why I ranked this movie so high!), and many others I could mention, this movie is still my favorite Dragon Ball Z movie to this day! Sure, the final battle was short, but it was at least memorable.
However, there's one more thing. Even though I think this movie is the best Dragon Ball Z film of all time (I mean, I rated it 10 stars), it kind of loses some points for me because of Cooler's Armored Squadron. Sure, they were better than the Ginyu Force (although Jeice was a beast), but they were all killed like Piccolo just like how all of the Ginyu Force was killed by Vegeta on Namek. Goku pretty much killed Salza during his power up before his fight with Cooler, so I don't know how the heck Salza survived just to be killed by Piccolo.
Nevertheless, this is my most favorite Dragon Ball Z film, Cooler still remains my #1 favorite Dragon Ball villain (make him canon, Akira Toriyama, you created him!) and I go back to this time and time again. If you want to watch all of the Dragon Ball Z movies in any order, start with this one and watch it in the Funimation dub. You WON'T be disappointed... and THAT'S a promise.
