Finding Steve McQueen (2019)
Fun to watch
This is one of those "just right" movies that has all the right ingredients and delivers a good time for all.
There's a host of top notch journeyman actors doing their shtick, a cool period set with proper amount of pop culture, some fun action, and a big load of charm.
It punched just above its weight and leaves you with a true smile on your face. And apparently its a true story to boot.
Although a solid entertaining flick, I would not have pegged as multi watch, but I did watch again last night with the wife and it did hold up. So there you go, do yourself a favor and watch it at least once.
The Late Game (2024)
A good honest hockey indi
Come on guys, really what's with the 1 star haters...?
This is just a good honest hockey indi, nothing more nothing less.
The story is typical, the acting OK and production is on the cheaper side but thought the editing for the most part punched above its weight.
Most importantly it has you smiling and laughing at the right spots.
I imagine that some people were expecting a bigger production, or just not used to the 'Shorsey' type repartee.
I'll watch out for this directors stuff, expect it will only get better.
This one is definitely worth your 80minute investment, and had me wanting to watch 'Slapshot' again.
Enjoy.
Frasier (2023)
What a shame...
A crying shame.
Even with lowered expectations, this show is plain terrible.
Like many, I'm a devotee of the original and really enjoy Kelsey Grammer, so very sad to report that this is just bad.
Pale actors spitting hopelessly flat one-liners, overpowered by an incredibly annoying laugh track.
I expect it's the reason no other original cast wanted to touch it.
It's really disappointing that a show with such an illustrious legacy would be so grossly mishandled. I'm sure it's incredibly difficult to catch lightning twice, but really guys....not to even try is just insulting.
I gifted an extra star only because Kelsey made me smile with his trademark eloquence.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Was really expecting better, come on Tom...!
I feel like I'm betraying my childhood here.
Like all teens I loved the original, but lets be honest it was a pretty ordinary war movie propped up by a couple of rising stars, a huge score and jet fighters like we'd never seen before. It worked and it's a classic.
It looks like they really intended to do more in this one but ended up just going through the motions.
The action was great, flying sequences are out of this world, however the acting was twice as bad as the original (and that's saying something) the story was odd and fragmented and then poorly executed.
A lot of it was reminiscent of the cheap top gun knock offs from years gone past.
You will enjoy it but don't expect that old feeling.
Minx (2022)
Fun and well made.
High prod quality with a fun story line and entertaining cast. A smidge more than the sum of its parts, and well worth your time.
Not sure why it's getting a beating from some of the reviewers, a bit of nudity maybe offends some.
This Is Going to Hurt (2022)
Why don't they make more like this ?
Think I've only given one '10' before, but this is honestly the best show I've seen in a while. You can really see the heritage shine through - true story, book etc.
Really well produced, has it all covered, funny, sad, quirky, and gripping at times. Just hope they can manage a second season.
Do yourself a favor and watch the first 10mins, you won't be able to stop.
Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber (2022)
So much potential...
I don't like leaving bad reviews, and to be fair we do need the bad so we can appreciate the good.
I was half-hearted going in, the genre has been played a lot lately and there's only so many ways you can do this stuff. But alas these guys went in another direction...just plain bad, had me wincing and cringing the whole way through the first ep.
At first the prod quality looks OK and there's a decent cast, but the script and acting is straight out of a high school play, and it doesn't let up. For a minute I thought this was by design like some artsy theater experiment, but no, it's just plain bad. Real shame.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
A bloody good watch.
OK everyone deserves their opinion, some want a cradle to grave doco and some insist on absolute historical accuracy etc etc. You've got to remember that this is supposed to be entertaining while being revealing and at the same time infuse an artistic element that ties it all together in satisfying way.
I think this movie ticks all these boxes and does it well.
I wont spoil it by explaining the detail, but suffice to say that the casting is phenomenal and the script is very punchy as you would expect from Sorkin and has a tangible elegance to it.
Lucy and Desi are true industry heavyweights who's legacy is still felt today and anyone interested should read about them or watch a doco.
This movie is very well crafted, enormously engaging and should see some award nominations.
Martin and Lewis (2002)
Loved it.
A really great bio pic on the duo. From all I understand it is a true reflection and is very entertaining in itself.
The casting is pretty bloody good, despite critiques to the contrary.
Watch this one, you wont be sorry.
Maid (2021)
Really interesting and well produced
I firmly believe that IMDB is a place to talk about the quality of the subject art, and not a platform for anything else.
I thought this show was really well crafted. The story is good, the acting great, the cast brilliant (especially the main character).
Definitely worth a watch and perhaps a study of parts of society some of us do not always consider.
Well done.
Dopesick (2021)
Worth a watch , could have done better
A really hard one to reveiw, in that it is an incredible true story that needs to be told at any cost. However given the story scope and the cast this could have been so much more entertaining. There always seemed something missing.
That all said I highly recommend watching.
Dog Years (2017)
Normally an 8, but RIP Burt.
This is an incredibly fitting end to an extraordinary mans career, on and off screen.
It is a true version of art imitating life, and I strongly suggest that anyone not familiar with BR's life should spend some time acquainting themselves before watching this movie.
If you do it will leave a lump in your throat, and if you do not it is still an entertaining movie and well worth the time. I'd call it an Indie and a half.
The White Lotus (2021)
9 is a big call, but wow alot of prod quality here.
This one is a solid character piece with great visual treatment and an equally hypnotic musical score.
The story is sparse yet quirky, and manages to hit you in the face when needed with just the right intensity and timing. Honestly - not a lot actually happens yet you are taken on a really cool journey.
I've rarely seen anything this well crafted and balanced.
I know all of this sounds really wanky, but I can't think of any other way to boil it down.
Bravo to all involved and I hope they manage to do another season - somehow...
Starstruck (2021)
Really fun tv, bravo.
The core story is as old as time, but is so well spun by likeable cast and deft handling, you cant help but love it.
The show punches well above its weight and I'm just hoping they'll craft another season.
Well done to everyone involved in making this, and thank you for your work.
Shiva Baby (2020)
Really satisfying, an Indie that floats to the top.
This is a twist on an old theme, well written, well cast and nice performances. Definitely delivers more than the sum of its parts.
Been a while since I've seen a low key movie that hit all the notes and left an impression. Like one of the other reviewers said - very Fleabag-esq.
68 Whiskey (2020)
Finding its feet
I wouldn't normally write a review so early in show life-cycle, but man there needs to be some balance here...!
Guys, this is an entertaining show. Yeh it's not a mind blowing epic water cooler emmy winner, but I'm sure that wasn't the intention. The plot is upbeat, the characters relatable and acting is really good. Very watchable.
Lodge 49 (2018)
Cool show
A slow burner to be sure, but wow keeps you watching the whole time. Just good quirky fun stuff. The performances are solid with a few familiar faces and some well written characters.
I reckon would be better watched with a in hand.
Catastrophe (2015)
Top show, OK I'm a hard marker....
Grabbed this and binged, truly excellent. Characters are easy and fully formed, brilliant cast, story is fun and well written. Just a really good pommy gem.
