It would seem that Tim Curry would welcome the role of a kind-hearted, singing, dancing sideshow entrepreneur, roving through the European woods in a gypsy caravan. He seems to be enjoying himself greatly being able to be the understanding father figure to the physically impaired entertainers who also seem to be enjoying their work. It is also a coming-of-age story. Most teenage girls seem to think of themselves as grotesque until love is in the air. I had a little trouble with the ending. Without giving it away I can say that, with a good character, sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone. I give it 10 points, so there.
Love truly conquers all in this wonderful, warm story of loss and redemption. Full of the Human Conflict - what is love, who is good, can ultimate sin be redeemed. A little too much information from Billy Bob as to sexual technique. Although well shot, sex scenes run a little long, adding an unneeded edge to Halle's Historical Oscar-winning performance. No complaints about the sexuality in general; it just seems like a whole different movie. Berry's best acting is in her subtle, yearning, silent reflection and grief. There are scenes too painful to watch but too touching to miss. Brutal and deadly racism takes on compassionate self-mending and gets a bloody thrashing. Peter Boyle represents the Old Ways and is put away for good. This sudden classic will shine through time as one of the most thought-provoking analyses of the human condition of its age. But what (where did I miss this?) is the Monster's Ball? I feel like an idiot about this. I mean really, What is it?
