Odwilz (2022)
Season 1 was best, Season 2 not so much
Season one of this show was very good and had me glued to my seat. While season 2 started out good, it became silly. I mean, for a so-called smart person, this female detective is the dumbest detective I have ever come across. There are so many holes in the story you cannot think too much. The one thing that really made me realize the writer has no brains is that when the detective finds a missing girl in a house, she stays there to cook for her. WHAT?! Talk about absolutely stupidity. And of course the bad guys find them, but they escape and After seeing how stupid this was, I am not sure if Season 3 will be any better. But I can hope.
Territory (2024)
Yellowstone in Australia
If ever there was a clone of a show, this is it. This is basically Yellowstone in Australia. It is watchable, and the acting good, but wow, every has a problem and there does not appear to be a good guy. In Yellowstone you either like or hate the main character. Here, there is no way to like someone who is abusive and basically a selfish jerk. But that is my opinion. There are some twists in the plot that will keep you interested, and it is something that will hold your interest, but it does not have the quality of Yellowstone and in some places falls flat. At the end, it leaves it open for a second season but so many of the characters you liked in the show were killed off, so why would I want to watch a season two since the remaining characters are not ones that are interesting.
It is worth a look.
Monkey Man (2024)
A Poor Man's John Wick meets Rocky
This is just an awful poor man's John Wick. The story is silly and you do not even know why he is fighting until at least one-third of the way through the movie. And like Rocky he is trained but in his case by a drum beat and some hijras. It is a silly story and very juvenile. If I was a 15-year-old-boy living in India I might find this interesting. But the fight scenes are sped up to make them look more interesting. There is such overuse of the F word, it is more than ridiculous. There are some bad movies these days and this is another one. Sorry to say it is really a waste of time. The Fast Forward key is your friend, or better yet, just Stop and Exit.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
A soap opera for the masses
This is a good story and Ron Howard does what he does best and that is make a 2-hour soap opera. It held my interest and considering the awful movies that are around these days, it is worth watching. But this is not going to win awards. The movie is really all about emotion and making you cry. The focus is more on how screwed up a family is and how J. D. Vance overcame it all. Of course, this was 2-years before he was elected Senator. And you have to give him credit, he overcame a really screwed-up family life. It's like a Hillbilly Cinderella Man, which by the way was another Ron Howard movie. JD Vance goes from an awful beginning to a happy ending.
Gangs of London (2020)
Choreographed fighting like old Kung Fu movies and poor story
Those that seem to like this show probably have no idea what a good show really is. This one has some good actors in it, but the plot is just all over the place. Why are people turning on each other? No one knows. All the loyal people making deals with others. The series glorifies the criminals and makes little sense. But hey this is not reality just entertainment for the masses.
The fighting is pure choreographed nonsense and very reminiscent of the old Hong Kong Kung Fu movies. One man fights 8 and beats them all. Oh yeah, he has a dart that helps him. Sure, and I have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale. Add to that some really stupid parts where people who are supposedly trained in combat and guns make the dumbest mistakes. One gets too close to a criminal and guess what? Of course, the gun gets grabbed. And then the choreographed fighting starts. Really? This series was written by someone who has no experience with combat. Really stupid.
Hands of Stone (2016)
Decent if you're a fan
If you are a fan of boxing fan you will like this movie. Moreso if you followed Roberto Duran's career. While I did enjoy parts of it, there was a lot of what I would call fluff in it. And of course, to fill some of the voids there were more sex scenes than really necessary. While I do not mind that they were included, there was no need to draw them out. Usher stole the show as Sugar Ray Leonard. Very well done. While it is hard to take a career that lasted decades and put it into a 2-hour movie there were a lot of parts that were left out and it pretty much ended in 1983 when he fought Davey Moore. However, Duran returned to the ring more than a year before that and had 6 fights prior to fighting Moore. But such is Hollywood. Don't let facts get in the way of a tale.
Einstein and the Bomb (2024)
History with guilt
I thought this would be interesting to watch, but the theme turned out to be as expected. I would pass on this show. This movie tries to blame Einstein or find fault as to who developed the Atom Bomb. It is basically a guilt trip for the viewers. Yes, War is terrible. While this so-called documentary mentioned the reason for the development was to beat Germany to creating this awful weapon, it glosses over the fact that no one knew the Nazis had failed in developing the Atomic bomb, and then ignores the reason it was used to end World War 2. Allied casualties were 7,000 a week. The invasion of Japan would have required hundreds of thousands of soldiers both American and British. The anticipated casualties were estimated to be almost 200,000 men, the same number used to invade Normandy. And if the fighting lasted longer more lives on both sides would be lost. So, what would one do? But of course this was more about Einstein and laying a guilt trip on the viewer.
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024)
Yawn - Is it over yet?
Horizon Part 1 is long and slow. Yes, there are some highlights, but for the most part it drags through 3 hours. This may be part of the reason they delayed Part 2 and undecided if Part 3 will actually be made. Maybe this would have been a better TV Series, but either way it proves that while Kevin Costner is a decent actor and really great in Westerns, he is a lousy director and writer. There are multiple stories in this movie that one might imagine will be tied together in story somewhere but at least for the first 30 minutes you wonder what the heck is going on. There are few westerns these days and this is one that some may enjoy, but just make sure you have some caffeine handy so you do not doze off.
The Perfect Couple (2024)
Another Rich People with problems show
People love these stories. Rich people with problems so they can feel better about themselves since they are not rich. After all, rich people do not watch shows about rich people with problems, they are too busy making money. The acting is actually good but there are so many holes in the story it had to be written by someone more interested in a story than in fact. I mean, you do not question a suspect in a hospital room with no one else around. It would be coercion, and you would lose any case in court. And like many shows that are written without thinking, the cops are portrayed as idiots who consistently try to intimidate their suspects into giving them answers at every turn. Hello, Hollywood, not every cop is dumb!! But this is not a reality show, more about who done it and who is the murdered. All I can say is the show is too long. Could have been a 2-hour movie and would have made the same sense, maybe more sense.
The Brokenwood Mysteries: Three Gold Leaves of Jesus (2024)
Last Episode of the series is the worst
I really like this show. Makes me laugh, and while there are some episodes that are better than others, this one is the absolute worst. Don't bother watching it. The dialog is juvenile at best, the storyline is ridiculous, and it is basically something that was put together by someone who had no idea how to write an episode. Maybe the directors had their children write this story, it is that bad. And it is really a shame to end a popular series like this with an episode like this. The only good thing to say about this episode is that it can be used to at schools that teach film making to show students what they should not do. A great example of an incredibly bad storyline.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Terrible. Please no more
Once you have watched this movie, you will fully understand why it bombed at the box office. The 5-stars are for the Computer-Generated Images (CGI) which was really well done, unlike the story. But CGI cannot save a terrible movie. The plot is like something out of a high school writing club, yes, it's that bad. The first 20 minutes into the movie I sat and wondered what the movie was about. It made no sense. Then slowly it started to make a little sense, but not a lot. They took parts from the original movies and made it Ape v. Ape. They added humans, but it was confusing as some were like animals but the heroine was a genius. Of course, the Apes want something inside a human made vault and the heroine did not want that to happen. When the heroine finds a hidden entrance to the vault she can magically turn on the electricity. Wow! Electricity still works 200 or 300 years later. And in the end the 200 year old satellite dishes which have had no maintenance are still functioning. Really?? This is filled with so much Hollywood nonsense you have to wonder how dumb the writers think the audience really is. Or if it was designed for 10-year-olds. Not worth the time to watch it and really I hope Disney puts this franchise to rest. Why spend more money to make an even worse movie.
Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver (2024)
Fast Forward is your friend
Zack Snyder continues on his quest to be George Lucas, but his Rebel Moon, an attempt of creating a Star Wars story, falls completely flat. If you thought Part One was awful, Part Two makes it look good. Remember, with Zack Snyder movies, Fast Forward is your best friend. No idea why anyone would think a longer version, called a Director's Cut, somehow makes a bad movie better. It does not! It only makes a bad movie longer. Rebel Moon is a collective mess. It copies parts of Star Wars, Gladiator, uses names from the Roman Empire, has bad guys with uniforms and marching boots modeled after Nazis, and adds a C3PO-type robot named Jimmy who ends up being a hero. The dialog at best is juvenile and only magnifies the poor acting from the second-rate actors selected to make this embarrassment of a film. Add in odd-looking aliens using British phrases like "Oi," Irish folk music and dance which obviously originated from the Irish immigrants, and more blood and gore than in you would see in a slaughterhouse, and you have a ridiculously bad movie. The movie ending indicates there could be a potential Part 3, but why? One and Two were bad enough. Why waste more money and effort to create another awful movie.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Bizarre mediocre Sci Fi Flick
This is just a very bizarre movie. Zack Snyder, the master of mediocre movies, continues his work by creating another very expensive and mediocre film. Although this film is long, boring, and drawn out, there is his Director's cut which is even longer and more boring. If you can picture a movie that is a poor man's version of Star Wars with fish headed character, bad guys that look like Nazis, add in a Roman colosseum and gladiators, and lots of blood and gore you have great special effects in a terrible movie. Add to that a lot of PC nonsense to ensure no complaints from a variety of groups and you have one long and awful film. I have no idea why they keep funding Zack Snyder's efforts, makes no sense. If you like weird and bloody sci-fi, this is right up your alley. If you prefer a movie worth watching look elsewhere.
Land of Bad (2024)
Suspenseful at times but mediocre
This movie starts out interesting and suspenseful. I had a difficult time believing Russell Crowe at his age with his big fat belly to be in the military. While a good actor, I believe he was miscast. The story will hold your interest but there are times you may think something does not make sense. And you would be right. But this is entertainment and not reality. There are a lot of bloody scenes and violence. You will wind up rooting for the good guys and this is great because in the end they come out on top. Lots of shooting and action, and while a decent movie, suffice it to say it's good but not great. That is the best way I can put it. If you like the military genre, this movie will fit you. Just don't think too much as you watch it because it is more entertainment than reality.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Slow and boring plus stupid
The show is more of a joke than it is a western. It's called a western horror show because it can't make up its mind. It starts out pretty interesting, but then it just goes downhill. There's no music in the background, the dialogue is mediocre, and really the plot is silly. Well, I had hoped this movie was decent. It turned out to be a dud. By the time you get halfway through the movie, you don't wanna watch it anymore. It is that slow. I had to fast-forward to finally get towards the end. When I watch the end, I was totally disappointed. This is really not worth your time. I think the only people that rated this greater than two or three stars are between 10-15 years old.
And Then There Were None (2015)
Wow! A real mystery
There is a reason Agatha Christie is considered the greatest mystery writer and this series proves it. It is a great adaptation of the book and one that will draw you in. The series is set in 1939, just before the WW2 and they kept the series true to the era. I spent the entire series trying to determine who is the murderer and did not want to stop watching it, it is that good. And the acting is truly first-rate with some well-known names. At only 3 episodes, the series is one that is ideal to binge something you will want to do by the time you reach episode 2. I only wish there were more shows like this.
The Beekeeper (2024)
Entertaining, but a little over the top
If you like action movies this is one for you. It is a typical Jason Statham movie with well choreographer action and fighting. But it is also an entertaining movie, and the premise of the movie is very good. I liked the plot and was cheering for Jason to get the bad guys. You will too as the movie pulls you in. Sure, there are some silly parts, but if you overthink things in the movie, you will not enjoy it. There will be some who will complain about the dialog, or the acting, but if you are a Jason Statham movie fan, this is for you. And the nice part is that there is a story you and follow without all the PC requirements that seem to permeate every movie these days.
Baby Reindeer (2024)
Awful show.
No idea why this gets good ratings. The show is just so silly it is ridiculous. Is there a story in here? Not sure. If you start watching the show you will be saying, what? Why is this happening? Why is the lead actor doing this? Much of it makes no sense, but somehow the show was funded. A bartender hits on someone because he feels sorry for them. And so, it begins. Lots of innuendos and ridiculous dialog. There is a lot of PC in this show, actually the show is all based around it. I guess when you cannot write a story you substitute, and this is obvious. There are far more interesting shows to watch than this one. I cannot believe people actually enjoyed this show. That says something. I gave up after two episodes as it was that bad. I have better things to do with my time. If you have nothing else to watch, perhaps watch the second hand on a clock, it is far more interesting.
The Bricklayer (2023)
Is this a joke?
This is an awful movie. The acting and dialog is pitiful and it is probably among the worst movies you will ever see. The movie is low budget with a lot of fight scenes that are comical. I mean really, do the people who are attacking simply let you punch them and then crack a bottle over their head? In this movie they do. Sure, there are a few nice jiujitsu flips, and it is nicely choreographed, but there are more than needed. And of course the bricklayer's handy dandy trowel is always nearby to stab an assailant. While the location of Thessaloniki is a nice touch and the few scenes where they show the city are probably the highlights of this movie, it still cannot make up for being an awful flick.
The Zone of Interest (2023)
Slow, too drawn out, and a waste of time
The Zone of Interest is not a story but what one might call a reality movie. It is slow, drawn out beyond belief, and really a waste of time. It shows the disregard for human life not only from the man running the camp, Rudolf Hoss, but his wife, children and relatives. He is a man who is cold, calculating, and has no interest in anything other than doing what he believes is his task of extermination.
The sound effects of screaming and gun fire in the background show you how people ignore the pain of others while building their own little "Zone of Interest." There are some chilling moments where there is actually some dialog in the movie when they are discussing building the crematoriums. There is zero emotion and all they care about is accomplishing their horrific task quickly and efficiently.
The end of the movie is odd. It switches from 1944 to 2024 without a segue and shows the camp now as a tourist attraction. And to make it worse, there was no details at the end so you have no idea what actually happened to Rudolf Hoss. Let me save you the trouble, he was hiding, they found him, he was tried, convicted, and hanged.
Damsel (2024)
Silly juvenile fantasy
If you were expecting a game of thrones type movie, this is not it. Sadly the movie is predictable and appears written for adolescent girls who are in 7th or 8th grade. Nothing the actors do could save this movie from being as bad as it is, I only hope they got paid before this movie was made so they fell a little better about how bad it is when they see it. You know that Elodie, played ny Millie Bobby Brown, will win out in the end and the dragon becomes her friend and of course helps to exact revenge. Some scenes are a little too bloody like when the dragon squishes people. Not really worth your time.
3 Body Problem (2024)
A juvenile approach to SciFi, a Dud!
This is one series that is just not very good. All the scientists are self-centered drug addicts and drunks who always go around partying. If you believe any of this drivel, I have a bridge in Brooklyn you will be interested in buying. Really, this is such a silly slow show I am not sure why people like it, unless they are so starved for a quality show this is the best of the worst. I will let others decide. If you are a adolescent with a low IQ this may be believable to you. But if you have any brains at all you will soon realize this is all about suspense and nonsense where reality does not exist.
The Gentlemen (2024)
Are you kidding?
This series is a joke. Not sure why Netflix even paid to produce it. The dialog is juvenile with all the talk about cocks and the stupid way things are done and the story is just plain bizzare. This is what one would call escape from reality and really a bad escape. Typical in Guy Ritchie movies, it is over the top, ridiculous, and of course there are no consequences for any killing or other actions. I am not sure who makes worse movies Guy Ritchie or Quenton Tarantino, as they are both just awful productions. But hey, people like garbage these days under the guise of what so-called "art." I was expecting a Rembrandt but here it is a lousy bizarre Picasso.
Irish Wish (2024)
Silly and Sappy
This is such a silly romantic comedy. If you are 20 something and looking for a silly romantic nonsensical comedy, then this is it. You can see the plot from a mile away and will guess the ending 10 minutes into the movie. I am not sure what was worse, the acting or the story itself, but I will let others be the judge as they were both mediocre at best. The scenery of Ireland is beautiful and that is probably the highlight of the movie. Other than that, this is a movie that is something to have on in the background and occasionally look at the screen if you need company around the house when all is quiet.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Very Good, not great, but worth watching
This movie is actually very good, but I would have to say not great. Although compared to the garbage coming out from Hollywood, it is the best I have seen in years and definitely the best of 2023. Oppenheimer is lionized in this biopic and Cillian Murphy did a great job acting the part. There are the obligatory and unnecessary sex scenes with Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock played by Florence Pugh. Emily Bunt was excellent as Oppenheimer's understanding wife and probably the best actor in the movie aside Murphy. The movie did show what many knew, and that was that Oppenheimer was so full of himself, he never thought about the reality of spies. Even a genius like can lack common sense and this is why the Soviets gained from the research done on the A-Bomb and H-Bomb. Oppenheimer was too naive to realize those he through well of, Klaus Fuchs, were Soviet Spies. Overall, the movie is a bit on the longer side but worth watching.1.
