Denys Arcand is and will be remembered for his career because he has given us awesome movies. A lot of them didn't do as well as Le déclin or Les invasions barbares, but they were still great pieces of film. I went to see Les invasions barbares not really knowing what to expect. I got out of there stunned. Denys Arcand made a marvelous ode to friendship and at the same time an extremely bitter criticism of our society. I may be from Québec, but I can appreciate good movies without having biased opinions because of where I am from. Les invasions barbares is a subtle movie, extremely funny at times, made without any pretention. I am not one of those people who will see a movie hoping to find some kind of resemblance or some kind of mistake to have a reason to say this movie wasn't good when everyone sees the opposite. I go in a theater, sit and ENJOY. Call me naive, call me pathetic, it makes me appreciate more the movies I see. For everyone who's interested in spending a great time with great actors, just see it. It's that simple.
I have to say right now that I am probably one of the greatest fans of Élise Guilbault in the entire world, so everything that she does attracts me. But in that movie. Wow!
Paulette, an old woman, relates the night that changed her life forever., but also talks about her entire life, starting with her wedding. We follow the deterioration of her relationship with her husband, who is a total ***hole.
La femme qui boit is not a cult film, it's not the best movie i've ever seen, but the performances of the actors are indescribable. I always thought that Élise Guilbault was one of the best actresses of the country, but she really strikes through the screen in this picture. She seems so real, she plays with all her heart. She's wonderful. It is also very well directed by Bernard Émond, a new director who really impressed me.
The mixture of Élise's play, Émond's direction, make of this movie a great masterpiece. As I said, it's not the best thing I've ever seen, but it made me think...
I strongly recommend it, and if you're not impressed, well, there's not a lot of things that will impress you in the future.
Bravo Élise, Luc, Michel, Alexandrine, Bernard, Gilles, and the rest of the cast & crew !
