Conte d'été (1996)
How did he pass up Margot?!
If you are an experienced Rohmer fan this film will not be hard to enjoy. If you are not a Rohmer fan...then you will be frustrated.
This film is not about Gaspard. This film is about how young beautiful women regard young eligible bachelors. Also...about how these women view themselves.
One of the most telling scenes was his girlfriend's exasperated speech about being better than the men who want her and feeling like she is being forced to follow them...she refuses too. From a man's point of view she would have been dumped right there...but from her point of view she has a point!
(But seriously...Margot was unbelievable! He failed!)
Conte d'hiver (1992)
So moving!
There are only a few times I been as moved by a film as this one.
Here are the few:
1. Rocky...at the end when loses to Apollo (RIP) but calls for Adrian.
2. The Messenger...when Joan Of Arc tells the soldiers to "fight for me!"and charges into battle
3. The Greatest Story Ever Told...when I was a little kid and saw Jesus crucified.
Now this one is added to the list. It is a film about two people who meet on a vacation and share a passionate relationship over that brief time period. By a simple mistake they lose contact...and the woman had his child without him knowing it.
She goes through two different relationships but can never get over this man. Just by simple chance she meet him on the bus...and the scene happens. I am not sure if this is the great film ever (I am strongly considering it)...but this for me..as a father of a beautiful daughter is the greatest scene ever.
My goodness!!! When the daughter calls him "daddy" I had to turn it off. I put my head in my hands and almost started a deep cry.
Le choix des armes (1981)
Interesting study in maturation
First impressions. I was blown away by the Mickey character. Very compelling portrayal of a man on a death-wish however, full of promise and hope.
My other thoughts. The conversation that the female lead had with Mickey disarmed him. When she yelled at him to stop screaming and talk..it was beautiful.
It seems all of the older men were having no success in reaching their "pupils", but the single woman character accomplishes so much by being vulnerable and understanding. After the intense phone scene...they are sitting and having a drink and talking.
The lesson in Choice Of Arms is can hardened men learn to reason together or must others suffer from their bad choices.
Un baiser s'il vous plaît (2007)
Disappointed by the end
Did they learn nothing from the story she told. It comes off as people/children who cannot control themselves...and casually ruin their lives for physical attraction.
Two people ruin and friend and the relationship is doomed to failure sense how can the trust each other.
If either were to break up with the other it would been a crime because why cause a divorce only to break up like children.
The only purpose this film showed was to display how little the creator of this film view love and commitment.
With all that said, it was an entertaining film because of the interesting dialogue and philosophy that was trying to be expressed.
Deux moi (2019)
So satisfying
At the end when the dance instructor say "Remy, pair up with the new girl." Great movie!
2 automnes 3 hivers (2013)
Shades of Annie Hall
I thought this was a beautiful film, to enjoy the French language, mannerisms and ideals.
It was beautifully shot with very subtle artistic nuances. This is one to enjoy with a spouse or significant other. Shades of Anne Hall.
Pas de scandale (1999)
Fabrice's smile
The film would be a waste of time if not for the beautiful cinematography. But even more if Fabrice's character, who plays everything so cool, calm, and off key.
Guy at the bars says "I am happy to see you guys like you in jail", he pauses, looks and smiles (killer), throw a little philosophical thought, and the excuses himself, without disrespect or attitude to a place where he and his friend can finish their utterly meaningless conversation.
Fabrice is cool. That is all I needed
Mr & Mme Adelman (2017)
One moment mattered...and then the rest
When the husband, how suffering from dementia, stops and tells his wife how much her loves her...I just about shed a tear. The she pushes him off a cliff.
Only because this film is French did I watch it and only because the actors were so compelling, especially the beautiful "Sarah" did I force myself to finish this.
A couple of things that were horrible:
1. Pregnant wife doing coke
2. Father calling a 9 year old and idiot
3. A mother crying a her sons funeral, about how much she hated him.
4. The dinner with friends scene. The Chilean bedroom scene.
Honestly, the best thing was that this was a French film and perhaps, that is all that matters. Like a French pastry that you know you shouldn't eat...but
