Charlie's Angels (2000)
Entertaining, that's all
This movie is just pure entertainment. That's all. Don't expect to watch a serious plot with superb acting because you'll be disappointed. This is not even close to the original show. The original Charlie's Angels show, with three bombshells that changed through the life of the successful of it, used to be a serious police drama, at least the producers and actors thought it was. It was indeed cheesy and ridiculous but still maintained that interesting feeling about police/detective shows, especially when three gorgeous women in power were the stars of it. This movie is indeed cheesy but of course more sophisticated than the original show. Fantastic special effects and easy and predictable but entertaining plot. And of course the three angels (Barrymore, Diaz, and Lucy) brought a special touch to it. But this is not even close to the show. It just an entertaining spoof of the show following the trend originated by the Scream series, and followed by I know what you did last summer and Scary Movies. If you take this movie as a spoof, you will not be disappointed. But if you rent (yeah, you read right RENT. I refused to pay $8 to see this movie) it don't expect to go through the memory lane while watching it. And you have something more entertaining and interesting to do...don't even bother renting it.
Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien (2000)
Harry is an excellent...friend!
This is an excellent movie with a great professional cast. Sergi Lopez as Harry and Laurent Lucas as Michel were absolutely credible and superb. It is amazing how foreign movies don't go for the I-Am-The-Cutest-Thing-On-Earth when they are going through the casting process. Most of the time the actors look like ordinary people, and this is the case on this must-to see movie. Very simple but tense and thrilling plot. Harry is obsessed with Michel's high school writings and gets really upset when his old schoolmate is not writing anymore due to his present situation: a wife, three annoying kids, authoritative parents. Harry takes it on his hands and decides to clear the air so Michel can come back to his passion. But he does it his on way! This movie kept me on the edge. Go see it!
Memento (2000)
Brilliant!
This movie definitely isn't for the masses. This is an excellent movie with a total different and original plot, the acting is superb especially from Guy Pearce and Carrie-Anne Moss. It was like watching a movie backwards and trying to put the puzzle together to understand what really happened. You gotta be alert every second of it to not lose your track. The ending was totally shocking. I didn't know what to say. This is one of the best movies of the year. Very original! Bravo!
The Tailor of Panama (2001)
flat!
If you like dark British humor this is the movie for you. But if you are looking for a movie with purpose, you got the wrong one. This movie was a total flop and kept me wondering through the entire hour and half 'when does this movie going to start?'. It's good to see Pierce Brosnan in a different type of role but the movie needed something more than a few good lines. Geoffrey Rush, who I considered one of the best actors from our times, felt lost. After Quills and Shine, seeing him in this movie makes you wonder 'does he need the money that bad?' Jamie Lee Curtis is kind of a sad story. At her age and point in her career, she still feels she needs to show some skin to get the audience attention. I think the intention and idea of the movie was good but the script and direction were totally flat.
Amores perros (2000)
Masterpiece!!
This movie is a must-to-see if you can get over the 'subtitles' fact. (I didn't have no problems with it because I understand Spanish). Personally I was really impressed by the quality, perfection, and superb acting of this Mexican movie. The movie consists of three different stories connected by one sole incident. Sometimes you will see the same scene from a different point of view. Or you'll see an out of place scene that will make sense later on. The script was exquisite, very loyal to the culture. The direction was brilliant keeping us interested from beginning to end. And the performances were excellent, so natural and real that you felt as if they were people you knew. Be aware there's extreme violence in this movie, and even though there were kids in the theater I went to, this is not a family movie. I don't recommend it for children if you are a responsible parent. This movie deserves an award.
