I get that she felt ignored by her kids and she was in a lousy marriage, but to disappear without any word, and then not to even consider that the police and family would be looking for her, is beyond reasonable. Bening was Exec Producer on this, so there's no excuse for the dumbness of this show - she in real life was part of it, just like her character who never suspected that letting a complete stranger move in was not normal.
Her manly performance was pretty hard to take as well - not sure what's happened to her. But she and Sam Neill didn't add much to this series. Neil should have stuck with his Australian accent, especially considering the fact that his character is actually from there. Adults don't lose accents when they move to another country and he should have known this and told the makers of the series. He sounded like he had a stroke with a deep raspy voice, struggling to say his lines. He's usually very good, but trying to sound American just didn't work.
Overall, I did enjoy the series, even though I figured out the ending by episode 2. It was so obvious - mom feels invisible, the kids are ignoring her (and rightfully so for what she did to Troy and Stan). So she just ups and leaves as though law enforcement and family didn't exist.
Could have been better with more incentive for her to run away like that.

No one was likable. The female leads are heartless vein and shallow. The men are dweebs with traits a moron could suspect were sociopaths from the start. I found myself saying "as if" so many times in the last episode, it was laughable. Complete utter garbage showing the female lead to be the worst of the sociopaths of the lot. And for some reason, like so many British series, there are kids in the show. We have no idea why as they have no central role other than to be accessories because the writers think that all people should have kids. No character development whatsoever in the writing or acting.
How could the weirdo female lead get married to another guy one year later when everyone knows her first husband is still alive - and again, where are the kids?????
I'd rather watch a film festival of Steptoe and Son and other thick British comedies from yesteryear than most recent UK dramas. Hire better writers that can write a story that is believable.

This film was well made in all aspects from the art direction, costumes, hair (with the odd bad wig) writing, directing and acting. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the era. Most young guys into music formed bands, few made it into a real career. It's unfortunate that David Chase didn't continue writing good movies like this one, and ended up writing about low lives in New Jersey.
It was interesting to get a look into Chase's early life with his parents. I hope he learned to have compassion for his mother, who clearly wasn't a very happy person, though no one seemed to notice much nor care. As though she was put on earth just to do the ironing and cooking for her ungrateful family.
