The Darkness (2024)
Definetely not good
I have seen many of the Nordic Noir / Crime series such as The Bridge, The Killing, Wallander, Beck, Trapped, Valhalla Murders, Karppi, etc. And I can assure you that this is one of the worst series in this genre that I have ever watched. The acting is so overreacting that you cannot stand it and I did not like the way how Lena Olin performs. On the other hand, there are plotholes in this series. I wish it was not so easy to guess who the killer was. It did not meet my expectations at all and I recommend you to skip these series and instead watch Den Som Draeber (Those Who Kill) series instead of wasting your time with this one. I give 3 over 10 only because it was filmed in Iceland.
Den som dræber - Fanget af mørket (2019)
Absolutely Fantastic Second and Fourth Seasons
I have watched all four seasons, and I can assure you that the second and fourth seasons are among the masterpieces of the Nordic Noir genre. Louise Bergstein (Natalie Madueno) is the main character in these series, working as a profiler assisting the police in solving criminal cases. The first season is good, but the real deal is the second season when the character Peter Hinge (portrayed by Tobias Santelmann) shows up. Then the third season has Alex Hogh Andersen from the Vikings series, but it is not as great as it was in the second season, but still, it is ok. However, the legendary season among all is the fourth season when Louise Bergstein faces her worst opponent. The last two episodes are almost like Sherlock Holmes vs Prof. Moriarty, so you should definitely watch it. The fourth season is awesome, thanks to two talented actors, Simon Sears and Swedish legend Dag Malmberg.
Le mangeur d'âmes (2024)
When Crimson Rivers meet Pagan Peak
Le Manguer D'ames (The Soul Eater) is probably one of the interesting movies of this year. The story takes place in a spooky little town which is located around a region where, strangely, small children are disappearing. Franck (Paul Hamy) and Elisabeth (Virginie Ledoyen) arrive at this little town where gruesome murders take place. The story is really cool, and it reminds me of the atmosphere of Les Rivieres Pourpes (Crimson Rivers). At the same time, the local folklore and legends remind Der Pass (Pagan Peak). There is a surprising ending, and it is not easy to guess it. I advise everyone to watch this movie. I wish they made a TV series based on this movie. I would definitely watch it. I give 8 over 10.
Lightfields (2013)
A Good Ghost Story
Lightfileds take place at three different time intervals. The beginning of the story takes place during the WW2 era. The second part occurs in the 1970s, and the third occurs in the 2000s. All these intervals are connected, but you can only understand it at the very end of the story. I can say that most of the actors and actresses starring in this series did a good job. It is almost like a Victorian-era ghost story since it contested women's political, social, and legal positions. On the other hand, "jealousy" and "envy" are very well examined in this series. For that reason, I advise everyone to give it a try and watch this series. For me, it is an 8 over 10.
The Truth About Jim (2024)
This would be a great documentary series IF
I love the works of Skye Borgman, such as Girl in the Picture, which was an outstanding documentary series that is hard to ever forget. As a result, I really had high hopes for The Truth About Jim, but my expectations went down automatically when they started to talk about the Zodiac Killer. I think it was totally unnecessary to assume that Jim Mordecai was the Zodiac Killer. The guy was a serial rapist, and he was pure evil, and you can understand this with the interviews of the family members. There may be even his involvement with 1970s Santa Rosa murders; however, when they came up with the Zodiac Killer that destroyed this documentary. It was so unnecessary, and the guy had no even relation with naval coding or ciphers and had a totally different Modus Operandi. I am sorry, but the maximum is 6 over 10 for this one!
STHLM Blackout (2024)
Could be better
I was surprised that there is another Stockholm-based TV series after Sthlm Requiem. The story is different, and watching this series was interesting until the end. The problem with this series is that it is short and it felt like it was pushed to be shorter. This can make the audience miss some points and create plot holes. It could be much better if there were 6-7 episodes. I am wondering why they had to make it only 4 episodes. The Bridge and Young Wallander's star Adam Palsson made me watch this series. He is an outstanding actor and he is acting great as usual. I hope there will be a second season with more episodes without plot holes.
Sugar (2024)
What a Twist At Episode 6
Colin Farrell has been one of my favorite actors for the last 20 years. I must say that he is gifted and each role fits him well. He can be the Penguin and at the same time, he can be Bullseye. Nevertheless, his current role as John Sugar is probably one of the most iconic roles that he has ever starred in. John Sugar is a private investigator and he gets a new case. He has to search for a girl called Olivia Siegel whose grandfather is a major director in Hollywood. You think this is a textbook Crime Noir-type series until the sixth episode where you encounter a major twist. The seventh and eighth episodes explain a lot of things however there is a certain need for a second season. I must say that Sugar is a very stylish TV show. Sugar's suits are extraordinary, and his car is a 1966 Chevrolet Stingray Corvette. The intro music is even more fashionable because it is Kamasi Washington's Street Fighter Mas. I hope that this show will continue with a second season. I vote 9 over 10. Watch this show, folks!
Nattevagten - Dæmoner går i arv (2023)
Bodnia and Waldau are BACK !
First Nightwatch was released in 1994 and a sequel was announced in 2022. I was surprised to hear that news because usually, it does not take that long for a horror movie sequel to arrive. Well now the year is 2024 and I could finally watch Nightwatch 2. I can tell you the atmosphere is not as eerie and scary as in the first movie. However, this does not mean that this movie is not worth watching but it is worth it. This movie is based on revenge and it is a rematch. I loved the duo of Bodnia and Waldau in the first movie and again we have the duo in the second. I liked the ending of this movie and I advise everyone to watch the first movie before watching this to remember the details. I give 8 over 10! Good job Mr. Bornedal!
Veronika (2024)
When Nordic Noir meets A Textbook Ghost Story
Veronika is probably one of the best recently released Nordic Noir shows within the last 3 years. Although it is not an extraordinary serie such as Wallander, The Bridge, The Killing or Beck, it is still worth watching. The uniqueness of this serie is that it combines Nordic Noir with Victorian Ghost Stories so it is an interesting mix. The atmosphere of this series is eerie, dark and even creepy and nature of Sweden is as usual stunning. Alexandra Rapaport and Tobias Santelmann are acting as usual great. If you have not seen Sandhamn Murders and Gåsmannen by Alexandra Rapaport you should definitely watch them. I think that this serie worths 8 over 10.
Jana - Märkta för livet (2024)
Worth Watching
Jana Markta för livet is basically about facing the ghosts of the past. It is based on the first book of Emeli Schepp's Jana Berzelius novels. Jana Berzelius is the leading character portrayed by Swedish actress Madeleine Martin. I liked the way how Madeleine Martin is acting and she does not make you irritated. Norrköping is beautiful and it is fascinating to watch the dark atmosphere. August Wittgenstein is great as usual. His performance was great at the Das Boot series. Although there are some plot holes, the series is worth watching. I assume that there may be a second season. I will certainly watch it. Finally, I do not think that Madeline Martin needs too much makeup. They should reserve her natural beauty.
Varg Veum (2007)
Watch only the First Season skip the Second Season
Varg Veum was very popular in Norway and Sweden in the early 2010s. I was a Master's Degree student back then in Stockholm and many of my friends were obsessed with Nordic Noir which made me get obsessed with it as well. Varg Veum is not like Wallander, Beck, The Bridge (Bron), The Killing (Forbrydelsen), or The Millenium Franchise. He is most likely an anti-hero who usually messes up with police investigations. Trond Espen Seim is really a good actor but the real deal in this series is Bjorn Floberg some may remember him from the Insomnia movie with the legendary Stellan Skarsgard. Overall the first season is really good and fun to watch. However, the second season is not good, and there are unnecessary dialogues and plot holes. As a result, I recommend everyone to watch only the first season and not spend their time on the second season. The long and the short of it is that Varg Veum is not the best of the Nordic Noir but still is not the worst of it.
Konvoi (2023)
Great Movie About Unknown Heroes of WW2!
Das Boot Franchise has greatly interested me in WWII naval warfare. I had to wait almost 8 months to watch the Konvoi. Tobias Santelmann is one of the leading actors in Norway. There are many TV series where you can watch him with different roles such as being a Viking leader, a serial killer, or a murder suspect who belongs to the LGBT community. Hence, Santelmann is really a gifted actor. In this movie, he is AWESOME because he portrays a second captain on a cargo ship that is trying to send supplies to the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. This movie is a gem and watch it because you learn things about the unknown heroes of WW2.
Den grænseløse (2024)
Weakest of the series
Department Q is one of my favourite series and it has been almost 11 years since The Keeper of Lost Causes was released. Hanging Girl / Boundless is the sixth movie adaptation of Jussi Olsen Adele's books. I need to be honest I loved the first four adaptations with Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares. The fifth adaptation was with a different cast and Ulrich Thomsen and Zaki Youssef became the main cast. For me the fifth movie (Marco Effect) was good with Thomsen and Youssef. However, I cannot say the same for Hanging Girl / Boundless. The cast changed again Thomsen is with Afshin Firouzi and I can tell you that he doesn't fit into the role of Detective Assad. Nevertheless, Ulrich Thomsen is a great actor and you like watching him as Detective Carl Mørck and that was the only reason why I was able to finish this episode. The ending was easily guessable and there are plot holes. The acting is fine but there are unlogical scenes in particular at the ending. In short, I can tell you that this is weakest episode among all 6 Department Q movies. Still give it a try if you love the series. I give 6 out of 10 points.
Reacher (2022)
Great First Season but Ordinary Second Season
The first season of Reacher was outstanding. The story was really catchy and the characters were very well portrayed by the actors. The script was well written and there were no unnecessary moments in the first season. On the contrary, the second season of Reacher is not good at all. There are very unnecessary moments in the second season and unlogical moments as well. For that reason, I can say that you won't lose anything at all if you dont watch the second season but watch the first season. I must add that Reacher series is way much better compared to Jack Reacher movie of Tom Cruise even though there is a really bad second season. Hence, I vote 8 out of 10 only for the sake of the first season.
Blackshore (2024)
Truth will come out soon or later
Blackshore is one of the latest Irish TV Series that has been realased. If be honest I had very high hopes for this show after watching other recent Irish TV Shows such as The Woman in the Wall and The Vanishing Triangle. However, it was not what I was expected. Although this show is a decent one and the story is quite good, there are issues with acting. I do not know what other people think but I do not think that Lisa Dwan is fit for the role of Detective Fia. I did not like the way how she acts in this show. Nevertheless, the other actors are really good in particularly Stanley Townsted (Andor and The Spy). But still this series is a decent one and I give 6 over 10.
Trom (2022)
We are waiting for the Second Season
I have become an addict of Nordic Noir ever since I studied my master's studies in Sweden. Ulrich Thomsen is one of the best actors in Scandinavia and Trom is another great serie of him that you must watch. Trom takes place in Faroe Islands which is an autonomous territory of Denmark. These islands are very famous because of their unearthly landscape like in the case of Iceland. For that reason, the atmosphere of this serie is absolutely great with beautiful scenery. In addition to this, the story is good and the other actors are playing good. However, the only bad thing about this serie is that there is need for a second season so that story can be completed. Anyhow I give 8 out of 10.
Den skyldige (2018)
A Must Watch
Den Skyldige (The Guilty) is a perfect example of how to make a great movie. The movie takes place in an emergency call center and yes the entire movie takes place in a room. Jacob Cedergren has an outstanding performance and you feel like he is actually a real person that is trying to help a person through calling all around in the Copenhagen area. The main story is based on the "guilty conscience" so it is very well analysed in this movie. This movie shows us that you do not need spend millions of effects on visual effects to make a great movie but instead you can do a great movie only in a room with basically one great actor as Jacob Cedergren. As I said this movie is a must watch. No wonder why Americans wanted to make a remake of it!
Criminal Record (2024)
A BRILLANT Grand CHESS Game
It has been a while that I have watched a good drama series as Criminal Record. A great story with the great performances of Peter Capaldi and Cush Jumbo. There are many important topics which are being discussed in this serie such as racism, crime, justice, inequality, prejucidice, and corruption, For that reason, this series is actually a critique of the current justice system in the United Kingdom. DCI Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) vs. DS June Lenker starts as a normal feud among two cops but then it evolves into a grand chess game. I believe that there will be a second season because of the suprising ending. Anyway you should watch it and you wont regret it.
Out of Darkness (2022)
A good explanation
Out of Darkness starts slowly and you witness a group of people who were migrating to a place which is unknown to them. They are speaking a language which is called the Tola language which is in fact created specially for this movie but I think that it contains words from Euskera (The Basque Language). The year is 45.000 BC so you witness how hunter gatherer people are living UNTIL the creature shows up. Well, in fact it is not a creature but it is a Neanderthal. So this movie has a good explanation which shows what happened to the Neanderthals. Well, they were basically massacred by the modern humans ! Give a try and watch it !
Masters of the Air (2024)
Computerized and Overrated and ELVIS
I am really sorry to say this but I do not want to spend my time watching Battlefield V gameplay. This TV Series is so computerized and so overrated. There is absolutely no historical accurancy by removing British, Canadian, French and Polish airmen from this TV serie. On the other hand, unneccessary dialogues and plot holes and repeating episodes that have zero meaning. I advise everyone to watch Band of Brothers and The Pacific. The only good thing in this serie is Callum Turner who has great potential to be a lead actor in Hollywood. Oh finally Mr. Elvis, man you should think that you have completed your role being as Elvis please focus on acting different characters in TV series and movies without being ELVIS ! 5 over 10.
Nattevagten (1994)
What a Movie and Danish Youth Setup of Movie Industry!
I follow Nordic Movies ever since I lived and studied in Sweden. I do follow Nordiskfilm releases and I saw that there is a movie called Nattevagten then I discovered that it is a sequal and there was in fact a movie which was very popular in Scandinavian countries back in 1994. I have found the movie and this movie ended up a great one. The movie is eerie and the atmosphere is horrifiyng. The most important thing about this movie is that it is almost like The Youth Setup in Football of the Danish Movie Industry. We have Sofia Grabol a Danish legend actress who became worldwide famous with The Killing and we have Kim Bodnia a Danish legend actor who became worldwide famous with The Bridge. In addition to them, we have another Danish legend actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who is worldwide famous with Game of Thrones. And finally we have Ulrich Thomsen another Danish legend actor who is worldwide famous with James Bond The World is not Enough, Forhøret, Trom and Department Q Franchise. On the other hand, a Danish veteran legend actor Gyrd Løfquist is also in this movie (He passed away back in 2012, RIP). Great movie and I give 8 over 10 to this Danish classic ! I watched it after 30 years but it is an absolute thriller !
De 12 van Oldenheim (2017)
Disastrous Ending
The series start slowly and then with the second disappearance at the swimming pool things get crazy in the small town of Oldheim. Almost each episode there is one person missing and the numbers increase upto 12 missing people. Nevertheless, one returns back totally shellshocked and mute. The series make you addicted to it and you want to learn what is the ending. I believed even that there is something supernatural going on in the town so it was that much well directed UNTIL the HORRIBLE ENDING! We are talking about a guy who killed 11 people with a remorse and he did these cold blooded. He killed even his brother and brother in law and he even allowed his mother to suicide. We are talking about a criminally insane guy who would just let go a woman that he has no connection that he asssaulted before and came back to kill her but the cop saved her. There is no even single logic in this ending ! WHAT A WASTE OF TIME DIRECTORS ? Even if he is totally lunatic he would never put the pistol on the table and release her to shoot himself. This is impossible with a criminally insane guy who has terrorized a whole town and made it evacuated and killed 11 people and let his own mother suicide !
After the Flood (2024)
It is not rubbish but it requires a second season for sure
After the Flood is a good TV serie in which each character has some skeletons in the closet. As a matter of fact, each episode we learn some new secrets of each character. Sophie Rundle is a really good actress and her character in this series is a younger version of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. On the other hand, there are important topics such as environmental management, corruption, and urbanization that this series focus on. As a matter of fact, I advise everyone to watch this serie IF they will release the second season of it because the story was left incomplete and it requires a second season. In short, I give 7 out of 10 to this serie and I hope that there will be a second season coming soon.
Hjemsøkt (2017)
It runs in the family
Hjemsokt (The Haunted) was one of the movies that I wanted to watch such a long time. It took 7 years to find it and watch it. I have read all the other comments and I have an explanation to the story. The family of Catherine has a long going mental illness story back in 1950s because her grandmother was admitted to asylum and she was released in 1955. Catherine's grandmother killed Marie who was the aunt of Catherine. The same thing was almost about to happen to Catherine because her mother tried to kill her but she let her die when she got stuck. At the end, the child of Catherine was asking her whether the witch has left or not and Catherine's face showed us all that there is a potential risk that she may try to hurt her own children as well. In short, the long continuation of mental issues in a family is the reason behind the events. I give 7 out of 10 to this movie.
Gods of the Deep (2023)
Smoke a cigarette under 37.000 feet in the sub OH YEAH
The movie is a B movie with a very low budget. Nevertheless, it was somehow fun to watch until the winged creature showed up that cannot move but just trying to move his hand up. However the best scene is when they decided to smoke cigarette in a submarine that is under 37.000 feet. In fact they smoke it with passion. The scenario is basically a combination of Call of Cthulu of HP Lovecraft and the Aquaman so folks there is nothing new. The high votes to this movie were given rather by trolls who have so much time or people who are related to the production team. Do not waste your time and watch other staff such as The Abyss an oldie but goldie !
