I've never read any of the HELLBOY comics before, and I went into this movie with an open mind........and when I came out I was pretty impressed. I liked this movie. Sure - there are some corny lines of dialogue, and when Hellyboy gets chucked around, it looks pretty comic-bookish and far fetched, but it's all good! :) Interesting characters too, and I liked the vision of hell as being a dark, empty void...and the seven gods (Ogdru Jahad) were A lot like some of H.P.Lovecraft's creations...I also hear that the director of this movie is deciding whether to make HELLBOY 2 or AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS? I'd go for the latter! He has the potential to do a good job! An entertaining movie, interesting theme (raising a demon to be a good guy) and a lot more...
Although a lot of people might me annoyed that the fantasy element of the legend doesn't make it into this film (Merlin ISN'T a proper fireball-castin' wizard here folks!) it's still an entertaining film. Visually attractive, (the snow-fight scene is good), acting is on-par, and the theme is there, and the history in context (as far as I could tell...)
My only major gripe would be that there is too much build up to the battle at the end, which doesn't pay of...I mean, Arthur's speech at the end doesn't work for me...and 7 well-trained knights and bottom-kickin' woads should've found those Saxon savages pretty easy to take out! They weren't really a formidable enemy! But i'm no historian, so I don't know what i'm talking about...
It's a very entertaining film, quite patriotic and should appeal to both guys and gals alike! Recommended...
