Just watched the first 2 episodes and I really enjoyed them! I have not read the book so I don't have an opinion or comparison to offer. I was drawn to this show because I enjoy Jennifer Garner and was hoping this role would be reminiscent of her Alias says and it was! She is amazing!
First the intro, the dialogue flow and story pacing are very similar to those in foreign thrillers/dramas/noirs and definitely not a soap opera vibe at all. I'm not sure where one of the reviewers got that. Definitely no overreacting or unrealistic theatrics. Yes it's slow paced but you're following along with Garner as she tried to piece together and grapple with what's happening. To me it was not too slow and I didn't ever feel bored.
Angourie Rice is a perfect fit alongside Garner. She was stellar in Mare of Eastown and is stellar in this role. I didn't find her whiny or annoying at all. She played a complex teenager and you can feel her worry, confusion and her chemistry with Garner in episode 2 has you hoping the daughter and stepmom will have a stronger relationship after all this.
Definitely give it a chance and suspend any expectations and just enjoy the ride!

I had to leave a review because like so many on here I loved the creator's prior show, Dark! But many seem to forget how little we really knew or understood each episode and each season answered a bit more and left you with more questions. 1899 starring an International cast does the same. They always have you guessing and the ending left my son and I speechless! So good and know that the next season will give answers and more questions as that's classic them lol
Besides the storyline and direction being stellar, this cast I was very excited to see because many of them are from my favorite shows like The Rain, Elite, The Head, Dark. The languages spoken in the show are German, French, Cantonese, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Definitely watch this show with subtitles and not dubbed bc the characters don't always know what each other are saying and that feeds the story. Such a well done show!! If you love a good kind twist this show is for you!

I'm not sure about the "bad acting" reviews. Women in Polygamist groups are taught to be subservient and it's also a very hard choice and act to follow through on, fleeing. The main women doing the rescues are amazing using their past experiences and trauma to help these women escape. It's heartbreaking to see all these women and children in these unhealthy and unsafe living conditions but you will cheer for them when they succeed. Great show if you like seeing women helping women succeed!
