I honestly feel like the bad reviews are from people who wanted to hate the main character and then were disappointed that the film made her deeper than the initial first couple of episodes. Go back to the very first lines in the first episode and the plot twist makes sense all along. A woman is presenting Catharine with an achievement award and describing her film as bringing out the viewer's own biases and showing it to them. This is exactly what Cuaron has done to all of us. Don't you see that this is symbolic of how easily the mob cancels people these days based on very little evidence or context? Literally all it takes sometimes is a short video clip that can cause the mob to descend and completely upend the life of the perceived wrongdoer. I believe the intent of Cuaron and the original writer was to call this out and make us see the pitfalls of this behavior and of unbridled vengeance.
Let me start by saying I'm not a huge horror fan. I occasionally enjoy lightweight thrillers like The Pope's Exorcist or the Haunting of Hill House. I'm definitely not into gratuitous gore or depravity for shock value. So, when I chose this movie on Amazon, I was hoping for another lightweight thriller but not sure what I was getting myself into. I'm so glad I stumbled onto this gem of a movie and gave it a shot. It delivered some mild thrills and super creepy scenes, along with an actual plot line that also added suspense and intensity, and I really love how they twisted and tied it up at the end. Instead of walking away feeling disgusted or disturbed like one night in a normal horror film, you walk away feeling positive...unless you are a sadist and you wanted to see the gore and nihilistic suffering and were disappointed that it wasn't there. Would recommend to anyone who loves gastronomy, cooking shows and lightweight thrills that will creep you out a bit but won't give you nightmares.
I don't know if it's the pregnancy hormones or if I just really loved this movie, but I'm practically tearing up writing this review. It was such an unexpected gem - and I learned something I never knew about. I just happened to turn it on one evening as I was sitting with my toddler who loves dogs and thought it would be something good to have going on in the background while we played and hung out. And then Willem Dafoe's face came up on the screen and I was like "Okay, you had my interest, but now you have my attention." The film struck the right balance between moments of suspense, heartwarming scenes, funny moments where Togo is being a mischievous pup, and the few scenes that had me vigorously wiping away my tears before anyone could see. It wasn't too heavy handed in any of these areas, in my opinion, and I appreciated the history lesson that came with it. I also appreciated that it had an overall happy ending. I generally refuse to watch animal movies because they piss me off when something happens to the animal, but this ending had us walking away feeling happier and more connected to our own mischievous pups than before we started watching. Dogs truly are man's (and woman's!) best friend!
